To sound like a video game physcologist, I guess it`s also the "Sims Symdrome" after playing a video game where character`s who are allowed to die over and over again. Some people just want just experiment all the variances of the said game, "If they allow it why not try it!"

Then there is the real I hate this Character so much I don`t want since they are allowing me to kill him or her off might as well"

Finally we have the troll variation (who come in several variations) who might not even have had the courage to kill off said hated character but will contanstly barage in any thread to proclaim " I hate such and such, such and such should die etc etc..." for their personal satifaction.

ExtremeOne has never played ME1 by his own admission, he has never gotten attached to the characters in that game and he would rather ME adopted even MORE shooter mechanics as opposed to RPG mechanics

I am not surprised about his reactions to things......I really do not pay attention to them anymore because there really is no point

I agree with numotsbane. If everyone survives the dramatic impact at the end of Mass Effect 2 is far lesser. On my first playthrough, the one I consider personal canon Thane and Mordin died, plus most of my crew, just because I was rushing forward and didn't pay much attention.

On each consecutive playthrough I leave Thane to die as second fire team leader. I truly like the character, and that's why I prefer him to be story-justified and have his redemption rather than any future bloating - as I honestly believe we'll have a deus ex machina "save Thane, find a cure" DLC and if I don't buy it, he'll likely be dead for ME3 anyway. While I try to keep Mordin, I also felt his story arc closes off better if he dies, even if more bitter.

Purposefully killing characters, though? No. Unless for the sake of variety and seeing how this works in ME3 (for example, cheated on Ashley, but left Miranda to die).

If you don't like someone, just don't recruit him/her.

I pretty much like all characters, so I've never let anyone die out of hate or dislike. So far, all of my playthroughs have everyone survive at the end. My next playthrough will have a few deaths for the sake of variety.

It's really hard not to let character fanbases change your perception of the character, especially if you talk to them a lot, or have friends in those fanbases. You become disturbed that a lot of the time you can't go in a character thread just to talk about a character neutrally and un-worshipfully, start your own group that's about no one character, and hide in there safely while spying on all the other groups through binoculars.

Do you do the same to their significant others if they start dating RL? Listen to yourself.

And you magically know they are loyal or not in advance... how? There is no in game indication of them not being loyal other than them asking your help with their loyalty missions, which isn't in itself any sign of disloyalty, especially since they often express reluctance to ask in the first place.

there is a difference between a character being in the game for story reasons and ones that have some connection to the game's main or sub story. Tali on the other hand has no connection to neither one. and her spot could have been used for other characters. yeah i could skip Tali but she also has the shield enhancement for the ship. i understand what you are saying but there is difference between fan service and story related characters.

What do you mean she has no connections? She is a very talented engineer with arguably more knowledge of Geth than anyone else in the galaxy (especially after her father is killed), she SAVED YOUR BUTT by having used that knowledge to recover the recording of Saren from a Geth trooper, and turning it over to you, and she is on the planet you find her on dealing with Geth and investigating unusual activity (which is almost certainly foreshadowing ME3).

And as for the shield enhancement, you are back to metagaming, since you don't need that enhancement to win. It is entirely reasonable for her to develop it or offer it though, and a lot more reasonable than Garrus conveniently knowing about the cannon upgrade.

If anything you are denying how well she fits in with the story based on blind prejudices because other fans like her more than you.

First, we're not killing real people since this is a video game.

Second, I've only killed off characters to get a different ending. I've also indirectly killed them because I didn't feel like doing their loyalty mission.

dude..no point arguing, the guy has NOT played ME1, he does not care, he lacks the perspective and for what's worth he'd rather see ME3 become a full shooter with conversations and no RPG features

Do your best to ignore him, he's been climbing the ranks as easily one the stupidest people on the board. It's impossible to find any respect for him.

Now, I realize this is just a game, but if you're playing through it and are legitimately trying to "be yourself" and not trying to do some perfect paragon/renegade/whatever, and you STILL go through with the process of killing a team member because you don't like them... then I have to say that I don't think I'd ever want to meet the real you. In that situation, I'd have to apply this to your own state of mind and even your own character as a whole. There's no way I'd ever consider you sane.

True, but the logic behind some of the posters is so ... wrong... that you have to wonder if they really understand they are getting angry and/or even with video game characters. Or somehow think they are getting even with the writers.

See, that I understand. Playing different permutations of the game choices to see what the results are is playing the game as an actual game.

I've noticed that a lot of hate for certain characters comes off as people simply being bitter that someone other than their favourite character is more popular. Thus killing them off could be a way of getting back at that character's fans. That, and loudly declaring that you've killed them is an easy way to get a rise out of people who like that character.

That's my psychology lecture for today.

I'm proud to say I've never allowed one person to die, even characters I despised like Jack. I prefer to have to most content possible in ME3, even if it is just an email.

This is what I have done too just to hear different dialogs for a change. I've even got Tali killed few times. Just a variety, nothing wrong with that.

AND that is so idiotic and mindblowing thing to do. Why the hell they should care if their fav character isnt as liked as someone else? Do they feel "lesser" if their fav character isnt as liked, do their lives really revolve around dumb and shallow popularity contests?

Hell, actually they should be happy that they are not following the mainstream, but belong to the elite underground. ^_^

Well, not liking a popular character doesn't elevate you above the "unwashed masses," any more than posting a scathing review of Twilight on amazon.com makes you an eminent literary critic. They remind me of people who say that Shakespeare was a hack or that the Beatles wrote terrible music, just so they can make themselves appear "elite."

It's funny how people treat characters like battle lines. I imagine some of it has to do with the fear that certain, less-popular characters will be shunted aside in favour of more popular ones. You can be sure that, if Tali returns in ME3 and other ME2 characters do not, there's going to be howls of complaints and all manner of Epic Rage.

It shall be most entertaining.

I know I know. I was just joking about the elite thing, well mostly anyway. =]

Oooh boy, if bioware would pull that kind of stunt there will be a bloody war in these forums.

Hm. actually, I'm interested to know... Aside from saying you dislike one character more than the other, what normally prompts you guys to choose Kaiden or Ash to save?

For example, my based-after-myself maleshep always saves Ash because as a character, I really like her and also as a gentleman's code of honor :wizard:. However, my two other shepards, one male and one female, save Kaiden because technically he is of higher rank, which I believe would mean he should be saved given a choice? idk I'm no military person but that's what commons sense tells me.

For me, only my first playthrough matters.  I sent Kaiden with Kirrahe due to his officer rank and familiarity with protocols.  When I had to choose, the mission was to blow the place up so I had to make sure it got blown the hell up.  Therefore, Ashley lived, but only because she was with the bomb.  Lucky! Image IPB

After that, it was either curiosity regarding outcomes or for teh lolz.

That explains a lot.

This is what really pisses me off about people: when they judge a book by its cover and make uncalled for judgments when they have no idea what they're talking about. Sorry Extreme one, I'll have to essentially ignore you from now on too. Its pathetic to act the way you do with no basis for doing it. I honestly couldn't care less about who you hate and who you like, but don't shove your opinion down other peoples' throats while simultaneously not knowing the whole picture. Honestly, its pathetic and degrading.

Anyway, back on topic.

That is an interesting outlook. In other words, you play the game the way its supposed to be played? Like it would be played as if it were real. You accept the consequences of your first play through... interesting... I would've done this for ME2, but Garrus died, and that I could simply not allow :P So I replayed it and everyone survived. Okay, I guess my puzzlement is less about how you could kill off someone you don't like and more... how could you dislike so many people? Or how could you dislike a single person, or a few people, so intensely?

Which is of course an extremely subjective question that has no real objective answer.

Personally I have the same question, as I don't hate any squad member nearly enough to want them dead in the next game.

It could just be that some people don't want to deal with a character at all, and therefore, leave them out and let them die for the next game.
