how do your squadmates choose which power to use? It seems like they tend to use one power exclusively over the others in their inventory. Full disclosure, I usually take Miranda, Garrus, Jacob, Zaeed, and have Gibbed Legion into the game, so I may be seeing behavior that isn't there.
Anyway, I finished Grunts loyality mission a couple days ago, took Mordin with level 2 Incinerate and level 4 Cryo Blast and Mordin always seemed to use Incinerate over Cryo Blast on unprotected enemies.
I figured it was the order in which the powers appear in the screen where you evolve them, but when I take Thane on missions he seems to use Warp (2nd in list) over Throw (1st). Maybe because he tends to throw a Warp at the beginning of a battle and I've never seen him use Throw because I'm wrapped up in what I'm doing - all I hear is "Take your body to the sea" followed by a boom and camera shake (but he does override my squad ammo with Shredder ammo).
And I've never seen Kasumi use Flashbang over Shadow Strike or Zaeed use Inferno Grenade, but Grunt uses Fortification without me telling him to (not as often as I'd like - and overrides my squad ammo) and Jacob uses Barrier (usually on cool down when I need a Pull - and overrides my squad ammo).
Anybody know how the game decides which squadmate powers to use? Sorry if this has been discussed before.
If you leave Squad Power Usage on...

Good question. I've never played with squad power usage on as I like to setup things myself.

They tend to use damaging powers over others. So a character like Thane with Warp and Throw will almost always Warp. The only thing that really stops them is if the bad guys are protected against their attack (anything that would make the power turn red on your tray). So Samara, say, wont use Reave until after the bad guys shields are down. It leads to them not using good Control powers much, which can be annoying.
I dont sweat it too much though. The game is really emant to be a swqaud based thing, and it shows in how much your performance improves when you start manually handling squad power usage. Just learn to manage a few extra hotkeys and you should be fine.

Using damaging powers first makes a lot of sense.
I usually turn squad usage off, so I never really noticed it. But I was playing my first Vanguard and it was a pretty steep learning curve so I turned it on until I figured out what I was doing (which I still haven't).
