Sure, you can imagine Hawke is a dwarf.

Don't ask such obvious flamebait questions. Learn subtlety in thine trolling.

Also, for a medieval setting I'm sure the game is already going to include a baffling amount of strong and independent female characters without even the protagonist being such.
Assuming I let that "without even the protagonist" comment slide...
Strong and independent female characters in Origins:
1. Ser Cauthrien
2. Morrigan
3. ???
I really don't see any validity in either of your remarks.

Why would you assume that "MaleHawke" or "LadyHawke" instantly means human Hawke, then? This poll does not make the distinction, just asks which gender will you play first. There's no reason to ask if you can play a dwarf in this thread.

Besides the ones you mentioned Origins/Awakening and the general lore include a lot of important, strong female characters. Two dalish Keepers, Leliana, Andraste, Empress Celene, Wynne, Mhairi, Velanna, Marjolaine, Queen Anora, etc. And I doubt the trend is going to change direction in DA2.
Quality female characters are important to have in basically any setting. But in this particular medieval dark heroic fantasy one, at one point I think I can't help but start to question the believability of some of them. Now, if you argue that "it's fantasy, everything should be possible", then I start to wonder why to chase realism to such an extent, when if one wishes for those unrealistic elements the obvious way to carry that out would be to create a setting that doesn't particularly try to evoke much realism to begin with - say the Warcraft of Discworld settings for instance. I just think there is a sort of conflict of of interests going on here - the setting wanting to have its cake and eat it too.

I'm a RL woman, but I'm used to playing RPGs as men. Playing as female just makes me remember that I wish they would hurry up and make a sequel to Dreamfall. I guess I associate female protagonists with the Adventure genre.
Having said that, Lady Hawke looks like being a great option and I'll surely give her a whirl on my second playthrough to make sure I don't miss anything.

What about people who want to play both?
And what about people who do not want to play either one? The whole idea of having one char only, together with other info I have read made me to decide not to buy DAO2. I do not want to have other shooter ala ME2 in a fantasy world.

Because people are assuming that if you don't want to buy the game, you wouldn't waste your time ****ing about it on the forums. But I suppose it's a false assumption.
