You know what thread was awesome in its disgustingness? Before people knew that changing Hawke's skin color changes his entire families, they were saying how they were going ot make Hawke black, and then it would be okay, for he was obviously adopted.

I'm rather sick in the head for thinking that the various loopholes of Bethany Romance are hilarious.

Bethany isn't any of our sisters. She's Hawke's. And since players who get way too involved in their characters live through them vicariously, to them it's not like Hawke is sleeping with Bethany, they are sleeping with Bethany.

It's why people say "I romanced Liara" (though I'm guilty of using that phrasing sometimes) instead of "My Shepard romanced Liara." Though the latter is more accurate, the former is more insightful when it comes to how people feel about LIs.

The reason it is amusing is that the potential "get-around-incest" theories reveal just how little people making them care about the idea of roleplaying, at the very least how it takes a backseat to their vicarious romance of an attractive virtual woman.

okay lock the thread... I wasn't all that serious, but as I said in the middle ages, the royals maried cousins and the dark ages it could be assumed that a whole village was related to each other... won't even touch the stone age, bronze age and all points forgotten.

Whom royals married had a lot more to do with political necessity and/or the function of creating heirs than social acceptability or sexuality.

I dunno but I think she might not last as long in the game as we would hope. From some of the comments the Devs have said she may not play as big a role in the game as we think. In other words she probably dies horribly.

yeah dev are said to give false info at times to keep fans guessing, and they don't want to real too much, which is understandable...... nobody likes being told an ending to a story. So not too much info on characters, like to be surprised in that aspect

Well it's understandable and I like it that way, I'd rather not go into the game knowing who to strip naked just to sell their gear later on, on my later playthroughs Jory's comments about Morrigan's roasting pot being warmer than the Kocari Wilds are a lot more amusing.  I would like to know a fair bit about each characters personality but nothing about their plot involvement, however I think we have a lot to learn about Bethany in that respect, or more likely everything to learn.

With regard to the Bethany/Carver possible choice ala Virmire, whilst on the first playthrough you would be hard pressed to miss the deceased character, It would make their absence more keenly felt if you made the opposite choice the second time.

I thought it wasn't so much that devs give out false info, it's that they make no effort whatsoever to correct people's preconceptions. Because it isn't their job, and because it would be a slippery slope. They'd have to comment on and clarify everything.

I wouldn't count Mhairi as a counterexample either, the fact she fails the Joining despite her initial importance was good storytelling, though it is somewhat cheapened by the fact quite literally everyone else who has to go through it in Awakenings succeeds.  Plus, nothing they say in her character bio on the website is false:

When Mhairi was a child, she was enraptured by tales of kings and nobles. All she wanted was to be like them, to fight for what she believed. Betrothed to a trader when she turned 16, she saw the life that lay ahead of her and enlisted in the army instead. Her fierce loyalty and devotion to Ferelden earned her the love and respect of her commanders and brothers-in-arms. King Cailan's betrayal and death hit Mhairi hard, and when she learned of the two Grey Wardens who quelled the Blight almost single-handedly, she vowed to serve the Wardens. When the call came for volunteers to help rebuild the order at Vigil's Keep, Mhairi jumped at the chance to join.

With Mhairi Bioware, whether it was marketing or the Devs, created preconceptions about her character by making a full on character vid and bio. Once I played the game it was clear how inconsequential she actually was but Bioware created the impression that she wasn't beforehand.

Great stuff Creid-X, added to OP.

I just had a quick look at the wiki and it now says that Bethany is Carver's twin, hadn't heard that before or is it just a wiki editor having a laugh?.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if they are twins there might be a greater chance of Bethany/Carver choice to be made, or then again perhaps not.


EDIT: With regard to the wiki and accuracy and such, I do rather love the last sentance here, eloquently describing Carver's supposed demise.
