With no intention to "rain on anyone's parade", it shouldn't hurt to acknowledge that nVIDIA has very seriously amended their focus in the last three years. Chipsets had been a major part of their business, then AMD puchased ATI, and their chipsets had the advantage by a sizable margin.
The nVIDIA CEO is a very feisty, contrary sort of individual, and when Intel begain squeezing his company out of the market for Intel chipsets, he became publicy aggressive toward the 900 pound gorilla of chip makers. Kinda like a tiny Chihuahua versus a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound. That didn't help things much at all.
When both AMD and Intel announced plans for integrated CPUs with the graphics included in the basic design, that was nVIDIA's signpost saying they had to redirect the company. The last two GPU generations have been directed toward competing with CPU makers as a massively parallel mathematical / scientific processor, not specifically toward the end- users who have supported their GPUs since they got started.
Both the GFX200s and GFX400s have apparently been a major challenge to deal with when used as GPUs instead of as CPUs, at least when it comes to getting the drivers right. This became obvious regarding older model GPUs not being fully supported by about 30% of the drivers the last three years, and periodic seiges of problems with a widely assorted legacy game list.

I still had more problems with my ATI then this nvidia card. With ATI I had problems with Dragon Age, Fallout 3, and a few other games I cannot recall at the time. Those problems were widely known and never addressed. I switched to nvidia and have an issue with one game, which is NWN.

I see limit extension in my drivers, 258.96 WHQL, for 8800GT.
Setting it does not help though. If anything it went slower and floor textures were ruined.

I confirm this after reverting back to latest nonbeta drivers. Some of the terrain textures are a little odd but the game is now playable. Thanks a million Sen!

ok, im glad some of you solved!! personally tonight i reinstalled (i was having the white texture issue on dds textures) nwn (currently i have installed nwn on a geforce 7025 (integrated card) and i got it working on xp32, using the late 258.96 original nvidia drivers, without a single edit on the control panel: so here i may list a few things i noticed--->
a-its good to install and update nwn with the antivirus turned OFF, it seems some antivirus doesnt like the way the engine updates dds (not sure about it, maybe someone can confirm)
b-in the previous installation i got to choose with the low fps issue OR the white dds texture issue
c-now, with a clean nwn installation with the antivirus turned off, and the video drivers removed and reinstalled with the late version, i got no need to configure it
d-rememeber sometimes copy/paste nwn configuration files (.ini) may slow down the game and cause issues, so its good to add manually the edits you need in notepad, using the ini that come with the installation
last... i still have an issue with some dds transparency on alpha layers, but the game runs like a fable

I think it's as Sen suggested, related to threaded optimization. As is, NWN acts funky with multi-core CPUs, so it's not abnormal that a GPU related function should cause NWN to crash/freeze up/run slowly.
And honestly, 20 FPS isn't as terrible as you make it out to be. Typical/older cinema movie productions run around 18 FPS in many circumstances. While low FPS does put a strain on your eyes, it's not any greater strain than staring at sub 75 HZ refresh rate for an extended period of time.

Just to help clarify the troubleshoothing, It must be the the dirvers vs the new "TECH" on the 400 series.
Just this week, I've replaced a 4 years old ASUS 7600GT that busted for a ZOTAC GF 9800 GT ECO Edition for a second system I have.
Using the latest stable release drivers from Nvidia and there are no FPS issues in NWN and that even with "Shiny Water" and "Environment Shadows" turned ON.
Here is the relevant info on the system.
Gigabyte microATX motherboard with intel G45 chipset (PCIe 2.0 x16) slot
Intel Pentium 45nm E6500 2.93 Mhz Dual-Core
G.Skill 2 Gb DDR2 800Mhz ram
7200rpm Hard Drives
using OnBoard Sound (Realtek Chip)
Windows XP 32 Bit
Run NWN at 1680x1050(Display Native) 30-58 FPS (varied)

Yes the problem is such that the game is still playable, but for me the slow frame rate is distracting enough that it really annoys me which in turn makes playing the game frustrating. This is doubly so considering that I've been gaming on a nwn server for the last four years and now I can't due to this issue. It's just too annoying. yes I tried Sen's quick fix but with all custom content everything turns white with no textures. In my mind it's just swapping one problem for another and in the end isn't a really a fix at all.

There are some white textures on LoC even and to my knowledge they do not have custom content. I look past this at the time though as atleast I can play again. I would like a true fix though.

Okay new info regarding on my problem:
The new layer on clothing (one with apron and robe etc.) the one that wasn't there before 1.69 seems to make all problems for me. Every time there's NPC with clothing that has one of those new clothing layers on armor my computer goes down to 10 - 20 fps from normal hundreds of frames per second.

Well, we are talking about support for something being experienced with what could be conservatively described as an "old" game.Grieyls wrote...

I'd hope a fix would be made, but I'd not be surprised if there isn't one.

New WHQLs just released:
http://www.nvidia.co...hql-driver.html
Other Improvements
* Adds support for OpenGL 4.1 for GeForce 400 series GPUs.
These made no change on my old 8800GT.

The latest drives remove the extension limit. Thus making the game unplayable.

260.89, makes NwN un-playable? Hm.
Well at the moment I have
GTX 460
258.96 Driver installed
I went into Nivida control panel, Manage 3D settings, Program settings, and Selected Nwn.exe
Extension limit is set to OFF
Threaded Optimization is ON
NwN runs smoothly. Tree's are white... texture on ground seems 16BIT even though set at 64.
Very playable, though Very Ugly.
So 260,89 makes NWN un-playable you say?

Update: I have done almost everything I can think of in my Nvidia Control panel.
Seems I got it backwards. It also seems to be only the Extension limit that causes the problem.
Extension limit set to OFF = No 16 Bit textures, No white trees, docks, bushes, ect.
15 - 20 FPS.....
Extension limit set to ON = 16 Bit Ugly ground, White images, Very disturbing..
55 - 60 FPS.... (Mostly always 60)
That's what I narrowed it down to, nothing else really improved anything/did much to help.
Hmmmmmmm...

I do not have the 260.89 installed at the time of those tests, I had 258.96 installed. Now I do have 260.89 installed, and the extension limit is gone as you said.
Though the game is playable with 15-20 FPS, roleplaying possible, and some combat. But not enjoyable the least. If the 258.96 is installed, the extension limit is seen. Though when turned ON, you had full FPS of the engine but pure white on trees and other things in the game, due to textures missing I assume.
This made the game perfectly playable, though exteremly ugly to play.
In conclusion,
258.96 installed and extention limit ON, you had full FPS, Ugly Graphics.
260.96 installed, extention limit gone, 15-20 FPS. Not very enjoyable.
This is with a GTX 460.
Added: My thoughs is the 4 series cards do not support OpenGL 1.5. This is the engine of the NwN, regardless of what it says in the manual, stating you can switch between OpenGL engine and DirectX.

And Nothing really happened when reverting back.
There is only the extension limit fix for the GTX 460, that I can see. Turning it ON and Thread optimizer OFF. As Sen stated.
But with that, you have low bit floor tiles and many mixing textures, not worth it. Ah well, maybe, possibly, one day, something will come about, but for now I am frustrated and annoyed with this.

Just adding another voice to this problem. Very disappointing, I recently played and loved NWN2... I was told that 1 was also amazing, but I am unable to play this game in its full glory because of this problem.
