I also have this problem and have a case at Nvidia for it. I've been replied to a couple of time by Nvidia to update them with more information. The case is no over 2 months old (or more) and I think they're still looking into it. Well I know they're not but thats the case status anyway :-)

I would like to add something here. I am overclocking my card quite a bit using MSI afterburner (gtx460).
Point being, in MSI afterburner you can see how much the GPU is being utlilized. AND guess what, it lies between 5-12%. Somehow this game (and prolly many other older games) cannot utilize the GPU as they should. I cannot think of anything else then a driver issue here. I know this didn't bring any "news" to this problem but I just wanted to mention it.

Just echoing that I'm having the same problem with my new GTX 470. Using the latest driver from October (6.14.12.6099, or 260.99). Extension limit doesn't appear in the Nvidia Control panel and setting threaded optimization off for NWN doesn't fix it.

Update: I posted this to the NVIDIA games & applications troubleshooting forum:

I just purchased a new PNY GTX 470 based card, and I'm seeing this problem with Neverwinter Nights as well. What appears to be happening is that the display alternates between being choppy and smooth, depending on how much motion is going on in the field of view. If the player's character is moving through an area with only static elements visible (such as walls, floors, etc.), then rendering will speed up and run as smooth as glass. However, as soon as a significant amount of movement appears in the field of view (such as beating wings, creatures moving in combat, etc.), the rendering abruptly slows down and becomes visibly choppy. The transition between the two is extremely noticeable and can be observed simply by rotating the camera field of view in a 360 degree circle. Rendering will for example speed up if the view is facing a wall, slow down as moving characters come into view, and speed up again as they move out of it.

Where did you go on the NVIDIA site to open a case? I'd like to do that too.

EDIT: Never mind. I found it here.

I just bought nwn yesterday and I have a gtx 480, did anyone ever get this problem resolved yet? Because the game isn't loading up the textures and stuff and I really hate the fact that it doesn't work.

Update: I just got the problem fixed for myself, I went and downloaded one of the patches and got everything working for me. Here's the link if anyone thinks this might help them.

http://nwn.bioware.c...glish_hotu.html

EDIT: this is for the gog version that I bought.

UPDATE 2: Now the fps has dropped to 18 but at least it looks good.

Hello guys,

i just got my GTX 580 today, same problem as with the GTX480

last week. As soon as there are cloaks or robes in the screen,

no matter if they`re worn bei NPC or my character, the fps drop

to ~15.

If i wear off cloak and robe, my fps is going fine.

So, since the Only Driver for GTX 580 is 262.99, i can`t realy

install any older Driver for get the Extension Limit Option back.

Either i have to wait for a new driver from nvidia to fix this, or someone

of the community will find a fix. Its very disapointing, to pay 500€ for the

latest Graphics Card, that breaks all fps Records, can`t run NWN

anymore in a playable way... :(

I tryed to switch off the visible cloaks in die nwplayer.ini, that worked,

but just for the fps drop when wearing a cloak.

Not nice so disable cloaks but well... Better than not beeing able to play

on my RP-Server anymore.

So, there whould still be the robes problem to solve. Until that i will have to

play on my Notebook it seems.

I hope someone finds a workaround fast, or Nvidia releases a driver that fixes

this.

Has anyone tried this:
http://nwn.bioware.c...589123&forum=49

Pertinent text shown below:

The_Krit

What I find interesting is that someone on a different forum has reported performance drop with normal settings, and and increase without cloaks/skins etc on the character.

Shortly after 1.68 came out, there were similar reports, and those were tracked down to a sound problem. Does disabling the sound (not turning down the volume, but opening menu -> Configure -> Change -> Sound: Disabled) help?

Quote: Is there a way to disable the cloak visual at all?

Yes. Just set all the models to 0 in cloakmodel.2da and stick the result in your override directory. It's not hard to do yourself -- the file is probably in your source directory, and any text editor can edit it -- and the end result can be downloaded from the Vault. (Either search there, or try with the sound disabled and I'll track down a link.)

Disabling sound did not have an increased performance. Fps: 26,1

Edit Cloakmodel 2da to 0.

Bham! We have a winner. FPS at 124-140.

I am now gonna update my 8800GTX to latest driver, and happily play both NwN1 and NwN2.

Still there is issues, but there is now a workaround for performance, as I see it.

Thank you for you aid, The_Krit.

This is No Sound Problem,

i`ve been searching the web now for about 1 week.
Everywhere i read about fps drops, after upgrading to a new
Graphics card, the people got a GT400 Series Nvidia card now.

I also found out, that there have been some changes in the GT400
Series (applies to GTX580 too, cause its only a full Version of the Fermi
Core.

All people that have fps drops, NOT useing a Fermi Core based card,
such as GTX460, GTX450, GTX480, GTX480, GTX580 and so on... may have
other problems in their system, such as drivers, or maybe soundcard Stuff.

For those, who run NWN over years on the same (or nearly the same hardware,
like me), and upgraded to GT400 this is only caused by changes in the Fermi
architecture.

In fact, someone wrote that nvidia changed some stuff about transparency,
robes, cloaks, slings and Bowstrings use models/textures with transparency
effects on them.

You can do two things about Bowstrings and cloaks:

1.) turn of visible cloaks in the .ini
2.) put some override files from a patch before 1.68 in your override folder

which has the following effect:

cloaks are invisible on the Charmodels now -> no fps drop, no more nice cloaks -.-
Bowstrings are invisible now -> no fps drop, no more nice bowstrings -.-

So you actualy _can_ do a workaround for 2 of the 3 fps problems by suffering some
nice game details, but you can Not workaround the robes fps drops. (well you can,
just not use any type of robes for your Chars, the NPCs... But this is not going to work
on Online Servers, cause you can`t enforce other people to wear off robes, cause you
cant play the game anymore with your new gfx card...
Nor you can enforce the dev team on a server to remove cloaks or robes on any npc`s.

Anyways, i don`t want to suffer much game details, to be able to play NWN...
And i realy don`t buy a new graphics card to be able to play Games in the highest
Resolutions possible, with antialaising, AAF etc. enabled with good fps, to decrease
Game Details... That makes a new gfx card obsolete.

In fact, fermi cores are not only Highend Gfx Cards, all new Gfx Cards from nvidia
are now based on fermi cores. So, sooner or later, nobody with a up to date Gfx card
will be able to play NWN anymore in about a few years, even if the operating System
and all other components whould be still able to run NWN without any problems.

Therefore, i hope nvidia releases a new Driver soon that fixes the fps drops in NWN.
There is already a Thread in the official nvidia forum about it.
I think Bioware isn`t going to do anything about it, since EA abandoned NWN with
Patch 1.69, which only came out for the English Version... -.-
We`re lucky, that the community released localisations for the other languages, e.g.
for German (iam from Germany). Otherwise only people with the English Version
now could play nwn on the most servers...
So, i don`t expect miracles from EA or Bioware to fix this, except Nvidia for a new
Driver or some tough guy who finds out how to get this stuff working again.

But you can have your own local versions of haks used on a server. As long as the hak name doesn't change there is no control of what's inside.
So you could very well have your local haks with modified models and textures that wouldn't cause issue. You could for exemple have robes that cause problem to be totally invisible (well of course, with no underwears on, Chars wearing robes would appear naked to you lol).

If you play regularly on the same server, the dev team may be willing to make a patch to haks, for those new cards. Like you said, as more and more player have these cards, if this doesn't get solved in a way or another, the player base will dwindle. Thats not something modules admin like. And robes are so common now, that it will be a whole community issue pretty fast.

If people with this issue could get together and try to make a list of actual Robe models (in which haks too) causing this, maybe the modellers could create or modify these Robes, and this way a "patch" could be created for haks using these.
Pinpointing acurately those models could also help some of the 3D modelling experts around to look into it and maybe find what exactly is causing this, and other modeller could be actually addressing this.

But I think a specific topic about this would be better posted in the custom content forum rather than here.

Well,

if the robes that causes problems whould only be custom robes,

i whould have used other ones, i guess.

But, all robes are affected by the fps lags, even the standard ones

that come with NWN theirselfs.

I'm on a GTS450 card and I'm having similar problems. Haven't tried with robes or ranged weapons specifically but I was looking to play a module using custom content and I had the same kinda problem. As soon as I equip certain pieces of equipment, FPS drops very low. Take them off, FPS goes way up again.

Hope some good fix can come for this. I can't think of a more annoying computer problem than when you have new technology having problems with old games, it's very frustrating.

Bump.

Guys and Girls, it's strange.

When i started campaing (without extension limit) i got 110-120 FPS (I got 460 GTX).

BUT when i started a server with CEP 2.1 on it i got only 15-20 FPS. I think the problem is no with NWN 1 but with CEP and items that it offers.

Unfortunately, no. The CEP simply contains a lot more content which uses the GL extensions which appear to have been deprecated in the never drivers.

I tried a very simple test - a stock NWN Diamond install, patched to 1.69, with no additional content. I opened several of the example modules (eg. the doors one, the cat lady). I selected a premade wizard character, then spawned a cloak. Equipping the cloak caused the FPS slowdown. Equipping a bow also caused slowdown. Heck, equipping one of the newer fancy robes for Wizards also caused the slowdown. Basically, it's a problem with the game/driver combination and even at minimum graphics settings it still happens.

What kind of graphics engine alterations would need to be made in order to update NwN to something like OpenGL 2.1? Is something like that even within the realm of possibility for the nwn community, or is it illegal to tinker with the game in that way?

Are Nvidia's drivers open source? If they are, then perhaps someone could create an OpenGL 1.5 driver for the new cards

Right, there may be a way but I don't have a 400/500 series card to test it on. What you need is an OGL wrapper for DirectX. When Vista was released I believe the drivers that installed with Vista for most vid cards used an OGL wrapper for DX, which was why everyone needed to get proper drivers in there ASAP to get things up to max speed. I may be wrong however, it may have been a software OGL implementation which would be too slow. I don't think Win7 went down this route. If it was a DX wrapper get hold of the Vista one. If it was software in Vista, you'll need to find another DX OGL wrapper.

Last time I used an OGL wrapper it was to get OGL on a Voodoo card, so you'll have to do the research yourself. Still, the theory is sound.

I seem to remember that a company called Scitech used to make a wrapper called GLDirect, but that was a long time ago and I don't know if it ever got to OGL 1.5.

Either that or run it on a netbook with a Radeon HD 4552 with shiney water off and safe movies on. Fast at full settings.

I'd prefer a solution which didn't require a wrapper. Linux doesn't have Direct3D and still has the same problem due to the fact the Linux/Windows NVIDIA drivers are basically the same, and so inherit the same benefits and flaws.

If someone was able to identify the GL calls which cause these performance regressions and develop a library to bypass it, that would work reasonably well until/unless NVIDIA releases a fixed driver. I know that at least with Linux a library could be inserted into the code via a LD_PRELOAD, which has been used with NWMovies and NWMouse. I imagine something similar would be quite possible in Windows as well.

In Windows, nope. In Linux there are the Nouveau drivers which are basically reverse engineered drivers developed by the wider community, but they don't yet work with the GTX 460. At this stage either someone makes a workaround that is applied to NWN or we wait and hope NVIDIA decides to fix things at their end.

Seems like a few other games are having problems with Nvidia's new cards.

Yet some of the people here seem to think that this is merely a driver issue isolated to NwN.

Good evening everyone, I too like you are afflicted by this problem, and I'm looking at as many forums as possible allies for this cause.

One of my fellow-sufferer has opened a new thread here:

http://forums.nvidia...howtopic=188517

Where a technician has responded by saying that Nvidia are considering the issue.

So I ask you to write in that thread to be as many as possible.

Thank you for your attention, and hopefully we can play soon to our beloved NWN.

The new Beta Drivers 266.35 doesn`t solve the problems with NWN,

in case anyone will ask if they do.

I installed them and tested around some stuff, sadly nothing.

Nvidia`s Release Notes are talking about performance gain on several

PC games, but no effect on NWN so far.

BUT, they fixed low fps bugs for crap like Final Fantasy XI... -.- lmao *bangs the head on the desk*

Seems mid Feb, is the fix date... Here's hoping, I've been away from my NWN server for far too long because if this issue

On another note getting FPS drops in other games as well. I'd mention them but they are not boiware games so not sure if I woud cross aline there I shouldn't be. Anyway some of these games are only 3 yrs old or less. So... Mid feb [fingers crossed]

I'm getting nearly identical issues. Been ripping my hair out about it, but can't do much at the moment. This is straight-up a driver problem, and not one we can fix (as of right now, at least).
