thanks for the info about Rogues.........

when you played as Bethany........did all of her spells involve using her staff? did she cast any with just her hands?

was anyone able to play as mage Hawke during the demo?

I don't remember Bethany ever casting with just her hands (except in the cutscenes), but I suppose it's possible. She used her staff a lot, and it looked really cool.

Mage Hawke was unavailable in the demo, sadly, but you could see them on the character select screen. Male Mage Hawke wore a surprisingly simple mage robe (compared to the hodepodge of gear the other models have), but perhaps there is still work to be done there (it makes sense the playable versions would be more detailed). I can't really describe in detail what the Female Mage Hawke wore, but I know it wasn't as plain as Male Hawke's robe.

thanks SirOccam!!

how bout Bethany's standard staff melee attacks ( or even special melee attacks if you saw any )?  did they look cool, too?

From the Youtube vids that I've seen, it looked liked everything was "exploding" around Bethany.....Posted Image

I plan to make my mage Hawke a viable staff melee fighter, similar to trailer Hawke, if that will at all be possible ( hoping Arcane Warrior still makes the cut ).  So, I'm just trying to get an idea, from someone who has experience with the demo, on how cool and "deadly" the mage staff melee attacks look.......

I mean.......from what I've heard, it sounds like warrior and rogue Hawke will be a beast on the battlefield.  From what you saw, would a melee mage be just as deadly with her staff?

Also, the mage outfit that Lady Hawke was wearing.........was it a more "armored" outfit ( like trailer Hawke ) or more like regular mage robe?

thanks again.

Yes, very much so. I got to see both ranged and melee, and they both look great. When they're close, you're like Morrigan in the Sacred Ashes trailer, but even when they're far away you do cooler staff animations, sometimes with little spins, and...well it just looks cool!

It pretty much was. But a lot of that is probably from the "exaggerated" portion. You can still kick ass during the rest, but it's much more reasonable.

Well like I said it "looks" cool...whether you can form a working fighting style out of it I'm not so sure. I think the melee part is more or less cosmetic, because you do about the same amount of damage doing that as you do auto-attacking from range. So it's really up to BioWare if they want to make any melee "spells"...there weren't any in the demo. The only melee stuff was for "regular" attacks, and if they had just used the ranged animation, the result would have been about the same. I think it's just eye candy.

...that's not to say I don't appreciate it. It's some delicious, delicious eye candy.

See above. Just going off what we saw on the demo, I don't think a "melee mage" is going to be a possibility. Unless they add it in via a specialization like Battle Mage in Awakening. The only meleeing going on for mages in the demo was basic attacks.

Also, the mage outfit that Lady Hawke was wearing.........was it a more "armored" outfit ( like trailer Hawke ) or more like regular mage robe?

It was closer to the regular mage robe than it was Hawke's outfit, but I think it was somewhere in between. I'm hesitant to try to go into detail as I really don't remember, so what I think I remember might end up being BS. I only got a quick glance. All my brain really registered was "male mage surprisingly plain, female mage not-so-plain."

Anyway, another thing randomly occurred to me that I never shared...during the Flemeth encounter (the real one), one of the dialogue options was "What do you all think?" Directed at your party. I obviously can't speculate on whether that'll be a frequently-occuring thing or not, but I definitely liked it. It was one thing I really felt was missing in DAO. I hope it'll be there often, at least for the "bigger" decisions.

Thanks for the answers, SirOccam.

I was wondering, it's been rumored that Carver doesn't have to die. Did you see any possible paths where Carver might not die, or did it seem more like it was just impossible to save him, like with King Cailan and Duncan?

I have to be honest...I didn't see any way around it. It could just be that it's incredibly subtle, or that for the demo it was limited to him, but I couldn't think of anything that might have changed it.

My hope is that in the full game, there'll be earlier dialogue that'll be sort of like a "mini-hardening" for Carver. In the demo, you see the ogre run forward, and Carver runs out to meet him, and although it's not laid out so plainly as this, you definitely get the feeling that he's doing it to protect everyone, and the mother in particular. So maybe an earlier line sparks something in him that makes the difference between him hesitating and him rushing into danger.

Then again that could just be wishful thinking.

yeah my best guess is that you can "train carver" and give him battlefield hints while you're in lothering before the invasion.

Just an update to this answer...I just saw Peter Thomas answer this question on his thread:

5. Finally, even though melee is not the primary focus of mages, it should be possible for a player to build his mage into a more melee-oriented mage, focusing on the standard staff attacks and spell attacks that use the staff, while using spells that boost the mages' combat skills and choosing the right equipment.

And, depending on the build, the mage could be used as a melee damage dealer or even as a tank.

Would that be possible?

Yes, it's possible, though probably less efficient that doing the same with a Warrior (for the tanking part). Of course, the Warrior wouldn't have the unique spells that the Mage does either.

So there you go.

thanks SirOccam!

yeah, at first, Peter's answers in his Q+A thread were getting me worried about the viability of creating a melee-oriented mage ( ala Arcane Warrior in Origins ). But, his later answers, and your descriptions, have restored my confidence.........somewhat......lol.

As long as I can create a Hawke as close to trailer Hawke as possible, I'll be satisfied.

oh, and it seems the PAX demo was all about revealing Lady Hawke and rogue gameplay.

Hopefully, by the time the demo comes out for the next expo, mage Hawke will get his/her chance in the spotlight, and hopefully mage combat will be more fleshed out by then.

Blur trailers aren't canon, there's no darkspawn at the urn, Grunt isn't 300 years old, Gay Wardens don't have glowing eyes etc

But what about Straight Wardens?

(sorry.. had to..) :)
