I have trade centres set up in all the towns and CR keep but nothing happens if i step into the portals how the heck do you use the things?
How do you use the portals?

You don't - not the way you're trying to use them, that is.
They are for "incoming" only. The only portal that lets you go out is the one in Crossroad Keep (only after you've upgraded it, of course). To use it, talk to the gnome there and tell him where you want to go. You may have to spin the camera to see him.

cheers, havent seen any gnomes and everything is fully upgraded will take another look

The gnome's a little hidden. Also try pressing the highlight objects key (usually Z) to have him light up and maybe make him easier to see.
