Soldier is the most popular by far? Really? That's disappointing, to say the least. I found Soldier to be boring and I hated spamming Adrenaline Rush.
New players that don't know what to pick will always pick Soldier, since it's something easy to get into. All you have to do is shoot.

Although only 20% of players play as femshep. That seems far too low for me, but if it is right then thats sad to hear:(

No wonder these people never finished the game. If they played any other class AND as FemShep I think more people would have finished the game more than 28 times.Frybread76 wrote...

No way is it right, that's just what the data implies.
I have a dudeShep, so I'm sure I contributed to this 80%.
But I have 2 femSheps, and I play both of them about 5 times more than the dudeShep. They simply left out the femShep statistic and people assume it is 20% when it's probably much higher.
These statistics are useless.

how do you play a single playthrough for 66 hours? You'd be just standing around a lot. That's about twice the time it takes me...
Noobs?

Well, to me, I automatically came to think:
80% of people customized their character when starting a new game (obviously not ME1 save).
80% of people who started a new game and/or imported their ME1 save played as male Shepard
Around 50% of people imported their ME1 save
etc.... I mean it seems clear to me though..
Maybe... no, many people changed ME1 character's face.

Exactly, the internet is not a good place to get an idea of anything really.
I imagine Tali is nowhere near as popular as the forums would have you believe for example.glacier1701 wrote...

It's not really surprising, vast majority of gamers are males.

40% of gamers are female!!!!
A large percentage of that figure comes from casual gamers, the Sims, puzzle games, etc. not hardcore gaming which is what we would be considered.
I agree, it would be innacurate to think "because 40% of player are femal" it's mean 40% of every game are played by female.
i don't belive 60% of guy play "my little poney in cheesy world" ...

Obviously these numbers are closer to being accurate than anything we've seen so far but I'd wager the spread is more like 70/30 or 65/35 at the most.

I played it 13 times.
GTA IV, CoD 4, Saints Row 2 and NFS Most Wanted are stalling me.

Think about the positive effects of these stats. If 80% did change their appearance then we'll get at least a better character generator.
Fingers crossed
Although I remember on the old boards with the build up to ME2 there were a few threads asking for this. I even started one. Although no devs responded to them everyone assumed the character creator would be worked on because 100% of people agreed to it in addition to the multiple pages of posts making it a real hot topic.
Of course as we know nothing happend. And here we are again, 100% of people saying they really want more features for the character creator for ME3 and the devs again are avoiding the subject like the plague.

That's not what the statistic is saying. It only says 80% of players play as a male. I have three Shep playthroughs, two of them are femsheps and my preferred two. The one is a 'self insert' shep that looks a little like me (but heavily badassed up) and uses my name. Therefore, I am in the 80% of people that have a male Shep...
... But it's actually the one I use least.
I imagine many do the same, prefer FemShep but have a male profile too to experience the changes in the story/dialogue.
This summary simply doesn't mention how many play as FemShep
As many have said, these figures are misleading in their lack of clarification.
EDIT: Damn, beaten to it by Mystranna. Oh well, interesting to see we have the same outlook on the stats and have the same system for Shepards
As for why the percentage of people who didn't finish it is so high, well that's easy. In fact, I reckon that statistic is probably better than most games. You're always going to get people who don't like a game. Are they idiots for not liking Mass Effect? Sure, but it's still the case. And when a game gets so much praise, they're bound to give it a go even if they hate the genre. They aren't surprised when they don't like it, but that statistic still counts. For examply, I've never finished Gears of War 2. I borrowed the first one, thought it was highly overrated but a solid mechanic - I just hated the visuals, story and characters. But when 2 came out, I had to try that to see if what really was 'so much better' when it established that nothing I had done in the first had been of any use whatsoever, I got annoyed and returned it to my friend. A lot of that will have happened with ME, though I personally judge all that did so with scorn
Oh, and then there's all the people who borrowed it but had to give it back before finishing, that happens a lot too.

To be honest, I prefer MaleShep to FemShep for a number of reasons, one of which is I don't like Jennifer Hale's VA in this game. It was too "breathy" most of the time for my liking. Now, I have played two FemSheps and still enjoyed the experience.

The character editor of ME is a pure piece of crap !
How can they work with actual pro 3D moddler and letting no possibility to view the character face from 360 angle.
When you are moddling a character face, front and 3/4 doesn't give enough feed back on the actual geometry that can appear altered by the lightning environement.
Not to stat that 75% of all the morph give an anbalanced face proportion ... it's really a shame.
The character creator of DAO is far better, most of the face you creat look at something human in a fine proportion.

I remember a thread like that on the old forums as well. A dev visited that thread, though. It was about how another EA company developed a cool in-game character customization tool. We hoped that something like that would be included in ME2. The dev also thought it was a cool development, but told us that for technical reasons (which he explained) it wouldn't be possible to implement that in a short time. So, we both had a different experience on the same topic. But the end result was the same. Nothing changed.Captain Crash wrote...

80% played as manshep. Yup I did that though I also put 6 more playthroughs as femshep. 80% could play man shep and 90% could play fem, it isnt exclusive
Finishing the game-just story or what classifies it as the finish. All sidequests?
