80% male Shepards? Wow, that's surprising to me.

People can play whatever way they enjoy. There is no wrong way.

I love seeing all these people who are pissed about the statistics because they don't fit their preconceptions or their own personal experience. True, the statistics are a little vague, but honestly, calling them BS because you don't like what they say... it's weak.

As far as the soldier and male Shepards go...

Consider that a lot of people probably just accept the default option. These are probably also people who didn't do all the loyalty quests or finish the game.

I enjoyed these statistics. Some of the posters really need to relax and I am glad BioWare shared the numbers.

I have a 54hr playthrough... I often have left my xbox to do something, and left the game running.

This statistics must be wrong.

I agree majority of people played as Male Shep but 80%?!
Also only 50% of people completed Mass Effect 2?!

I siad this in another thread, but I'm pretty sure the statistics are just misleading.

The 80% male Shepard stat is probably just saying how many people have male Shepards amongst their alts, not how many people exclusively play male Shepard or consider male Shep their main. There should be a female Shepard stat right next to it, and it will not be 20%.

I think this as well.  I have both a male and female Shepard and I would imagine most people do too.

Yes, there are far many more male gamers than females but those males I know also have female Shepards.

Likewise for the cheating thing, I got the paramour achievement with one of my Shepards, but my other one stayed loyal. I still have that achievement so would that stat then just register that I'm a "cheater"?

It's not a perfect system I'm sure.

How the heck did they get those numbers? I thought FemShep was very popular ...

I think the regular fans that post on these forums cannot be considered as average players. I assume that most of us did complete the game and (according to my poll) often play as FemShep. If not then a lot of these threads here won't make much sense. ;)

Yes. The members of this forum are actually a vast minority of people who buy and play the game. The opinions of the members of this forum also don't represent the majority opinion. It's easy to forget that.

If they can pick out how many times you skipped a convo then I imagine that they know exactly how many sheps moved on or not.

I am surprised that more people don't skip conversations. I really enjoy them myself... but I figure thatt the average gamer would not...

In any case, where did they get these statistics, I wonder.

I read on Eurogamer that aslong as you were connected to internet, the game sent anonymous data to Bioware. Don't know if that's true of course since gaming mags are known to be wrong sometimes

Thats what I sort of figured was happening, but I know a very large number of gamers who can't for some reason connect to live. Of course, being realistic, it would be damn near impossible to get 100% accurate statistics.

Is the data collected retroactively?

I've skipped large portions of the dialog on my third and fourth playthroughs, but now I feel guilty if it made them think I didn't like it—I definitely listened to all of it the first two times!

Is their sampling method collecting a representative sample of the playerbase? I think it probably is.  Therefore, calling BS on the stats seems rather unwarranted to me. Especially when it's something like, "No way that many people played ManShep! I don't like ManShep and I only play FemShep, therefore the stats are wrong!"

And BioWare is surprised at how many people imported saved games? I mean, seriously? After making such a huge deal about it, and letting everyone know, they expected no one to do it? Is that why they didn't bother to fix the stupid import flags?

I was under the impression that they strived to broaden the audience (ahem) with Mass Effect 2. It must have came as a big surprise that it's a game with a strong and dedicated, but not greatly expanding fan base. Note Casey Hudson's reaction in the article. Personally, I see that as a good thing. I hope they work to make ME3 a better import experience rather than a good stand-alone, as they did with ME2.

I want to know which play-through Bioware draws statistics from because my primary character (the one I imported from ME1) is a male vanguard, but I have several other class/gender combinations that I've played.

ALL/each of them, they are only taking raw data, what gender, what class, how long. If you play 10 times they count 10 times, finish only 8 then 2 non-completed.
The Skipped 15% dialogue is easy, they know how many responses in a given area, then they just count how many clicks you actually did. On multiple play-thrus do they really expect everyone to do EVERY dialogue? Because of the 15% skipped, I've started to click more on the left choices (I still X thru them tho) to keep BW making dialogue, besides there are sooooooo many options when you do that.

Yeah, the "skipping conversations" thing is a bit hazy. I mean, if someone is replaying the game again and again, of course he'll start skipping conversations, even if he loved them. They should consider only the first playthrough.

Eighty percent ManSheps!? Woah, that gotta be wrong. Where's the love for FemShep?
And 28 complete playthroughs is nice. I just did my, I don't know for certain though, 10th-12th playthrough now and am redoing all of my playthroughs again when Lair of the Shadowbroker hits (essentially I redo every single of my six careers everytime a major DLC kicks in!), but 28 times is a lot more. Respect!

Most vid gamers are dudes.  Most dudes are straight.  Most straights will play straight male character (it IS a standin for yourself, afterall). ipso facto

Unless you are a chick or a gay male, there is really only one reason to play a femshep: hot girl-on-girl action.

Most peeps will play with shep as an extension of their personality, thus most male players will play shep as either their ego or alter ego. Only a relative few will play the girly lead. It matters not a whiff if you are among those who play femshep, someone ALWAYS likes to think that they are representative of the majority/normal. You ain't. Just as those of us who are here on this site are NOT representative of most players. We are either WAY too into gaming, have no real life, or have lots of time to blow at the moment...or some combo of the above. That itself is not representative of the majority of players.

Keep in mind that there is NO context to these stats at all. This is likely first playthrough. I bet total playthroughs would be much more even.

I have no qualms playing games with male protagonists.  But I've only finished 1 MShep playthrough, and am on my 4th and 5th FemShep playthroughs.

Ms. Hale is absolutely spectacular as the FemShep voice.
