I am now doing a run soloing Yoshimo similar to my run with Korgan and my partial run with Aerie.  To recap:  I'm creating a character (in this case a bounty hunter) with the same stats, proficiencies, and abilities as the lowest level version of the NPC (in Yoshimo's case, this is a level 10 thief).  Since the character isn't necessarily up to the "starting" level of the NPC at the beginning of the game, I level them up to the lowest NPC level to match the NPC before specializing in how I think their ability points might better be applied.  For a bounty hunter, Yoshimo seems quite nerfed to me with his measly 35 in trap setting, but I left it there until he went to level 11.  Highlights of his run are described below.

Irenicus' dungeon level 1:
Yoshimo dismissed Aerie, then released Minsc and Jaheira, armed them from the gear he did not want for himself, and then dismissed them.  He did not satisfy Aataqah's curiosity.  He then hid in shadows to reach the room with many tanks, where he acquired a shortbow.  He went back out, dispatched the goblins, and discovered the inert golems in a closet.  Tactics to take out the golems:  Set a trap in the doorway (reload if he screws it up).  Fire an arrow at the golem from outside the door to activate it.  Let the trap kill it (or nearly kill it).  Finish the kill if necessary (I think he had to finish one of them).  He then hid in shadows to get the stone from Rielev, went to the sewer golem's room, and managed to backstab the mephit on the first try!  It didn't die, but it was "near death" and he killed it without having it cast its spell.

He hid in shadows to walk past the otyugh, went to Irenicus' bedroom, and got the statue key, then came back to the library area and painstakingly killed the goblins and mephits.  I won't go into his killing any more goblins and mephits from now on unless there was something special about it.

For Ilyich & Co., he chugged a potion of speed and set a trap in the hall before showing himself.  Then he threw a horror spell (Bhaalspawn power) into the room.  It worked on everyone except one slinger, so he killed the slinger and then everyone else as they ran around the room.  Only one of them was left by the time it wore off, but Ilyich was nowhere to be seen.  Yoshimo backtracked into the library and found Ilyich, near death, since he'd gotten caught in the trap.  A couple more whacks and he was dead too.

For the plane of air, he went inside, hid in shadows, and ran up to talk to the genie.  Then he ran to the dryads (hiding in shadows past the otyugh), got the flask, and delivered it to the genie in the same manner.  He did not engage any of the mephits in this area.

Once this was done, he decided to take on the otyugh, and managed to backstab it.  Even with that, it still took a long time (but no reloading) to kill it, since he got slowed and the oil of speed had worn off.  That done, he took the portal to the second level (saving the Cambion for later).

Irenicus' dungeon, level 2:

He met and dismissed himself (the game used Monty's pic).  Then he braced himself, opened the door, and fired at the nearest portal from where he stood, ignoring the mephits themselves.  Once it was dead, he continued to the second portal, careful to not expose more of the room than was absolutely necessary at a time.  It actually didn't take long at all with this method, although he had to chug a potion of extra healing in the middle of it.

Ellisime's clone was a bit harder.  On the third reload, he managed to backstab her before she mirror imaged.  But it didn't kill her, so he still had to get through the images and was pretty beat up by the time she fell.

The mephit in the next (exit) corridor regenerates and he couldn't hit it faster than it recuperate.  So he ignored it (and even managed to shut it in the torture room).

The duergar took several reloads.  For the successful run, he set a trap (he'd got another special one during a level up), then hid in shadows and backstabbed the mage.  Another hit finished it, and he ran out of the room.  Amazingly, the trap killed ALL THREE of the remaining duergar!

Frenneden was not so amusing.  He and Yoshimo swung and missed at each other for a very, very, very :::yawn::: long time.  Finally Frenneden lost since he dealt less damage per hit and wasn't using any healing potions.

At this point, Yoshimo went back to kill the Cambion.  He turned off the machine and hit the Cambion with a potion of fire breath.  This took several reloads because the first time I didn't think it was going to kill him and had Yoshimo chug his last oil of speed.  As soon as he did, the Cambion dropped dead from the firebreath potion.  To save the oil of speed, I reloaded and did it again, only this time the Cambion's magic resistance prevented his taking ANY damage at all.  About three reloads later, he succumbed to the firebreath once more, and died.

To get out, Yoshimo backstabbed the mage/thief, then killed him with his katana (a regular katana; not "Yoshimo's +1 katana")* and then killed the other two thieves.

Once out of the dungeon, Yoshimo went straight to the slums, got met by Gaelan Bayle, and is now beginning chapter 2.

* I don't equip ANY of these characters with their special equipment; I figure they lost it when they got captured.

Edited:  Forgot to mention that with the killing of the Cambion, Yoshimo is now at level 11 and his trap setting abilities have improved by 20 points.

Are you going to dual Yoshimo? Since the regular Yoshimo can be dueled, there isn't necessarily anything wrong with that, is it? Also, I presume you named your character Yoshimo, or ?

Enjoy your game Carinna! Bounty Hunters are a lot of fun in solo runs. They're my personal favorite (the level 16-20 Special Snares are admittedly awkward though).

I look forward to following your adventure.

Best,

A.

Nothing wrong with that, but I don't plan on it.  After what happened with Aerie (multi-class, so slow level progression and I got bored) I think that would be a bad idea.  And I've already soloed a fighter type with Korgan.  I'd like to see how Yoshimo pans out as he is (without dualing).

And yes, he's named Yoshimo and uses Yoshimo's portrait and colors.  Couldn't get the voice, so am using the Han Solo-type voice for him as it fit more than the others (the others sound too military).  The only Yoshimo-thing he doesn't use is Yoshimo's weapon for the reason described in my post.

Good luck on the adventure. I really enjoy playing thieves and they can be quite powerful even in a solo game. What I do not fully understand is why you make certain decisions.
The wand traps can also be avoided without having to go through the troubles of finding all the parts. They also do not sell for much and you cannot use them without ID anyway (and your lore is too low to accomplish that). Frennedan can be led to safety without fighting him one on one and you still get XP for helping him out (it sounded as if that was boring to you and he doesn't drop anything useful anyway). I am also uncertain why you went back for the cambion. His weapon you cannot wield and early game the miniquests in the city will give you plenty of XP and gold to compensate for skipping him. I won't ask much further about such things, but there are some other decisions that I also did not fully understand (like fighting Ellisime and the two golems when you can avoid them by hiding).

Were these decisions made for the roleplaying reasons, the challenge or because you want to fully complete all parts of the game (thus the entirety of the early dungeon)? Nothing wrong with that of course (personally, I like to clear out everything too).

Is there any possibility that the script  will  kill you  during the battle in Jon I's Lab., or you're not really THAT Yoshimo (the famous one Image IPB)?

I did this more because I want to fully complete all parts of the game, although I wasn't patient enough to kill all the mephits in the air plane.  Plus, I like to get certain of the wands even though he can't use them at this point in the game (cloudkill, monster summoning, and fire, to be specific).  I'll ID them with the glasses and sell them to Bernard after I get rid of Lehtinan so I can get a good price when I want to buy them back.

I do roleplay to a certain extent, but generally not in the opening dungeon since I can't think of very many good reasons an escaped captive would want to hang around to do everything and for some of it you have to pass up the exit (at least with Yoshimo I did not have to rest there like I did with Aerie - repeatedly!).  For Korgan or Aerie it was easy to determine what they would or would not do based on their alignment and some of the things said in-game by their characters (more Aerie than Korgan for this last).  Because of his role, Yoshimo did not give a lot of himself away during the game, so that's a little more murky.  He'll be going to the Shadow Thieves first thing today, though.

Yoshimo's adventures in Athkatla:

Yoshimo went directly to the Shadow Thieves' headquarters when he left Gaelan Bayle's.  Renal Bloodscalp offered him a job infiltrating Mae'var's guild, which he liked as it was basically a bounty on Mae'var, he just had to get some evidence first.  Once he'd met Mae'var, he chugged a potion of master thievery and robbed the place blind.  Then he went back to Renal's and robbed that place blind too before the potion wore off.  Once his bag of holding was bulging nicely (metaphorically at least), he stopped in at the Sea's Bounty to rest for 8 hours, as it was morning and he needed evening to complete Mae'var's quest.

Suna Seni's group:

As soon as he stepped out of the docks, they attacked.  He countered by swigging a potion of invisibility and tried to backstab Eldaran, but failed miserably.    Using his backup plan, he flung Horror down in their midst.  All except a bowman ran away in terror.  He picked the bowman off (he was a marginally better shot), but by then the Horror had worn off.  The only remaining benefit from it is it had scattered the group so they weren't all attacking him at once.  He cut down an annoying thief, and then their mage, before giving up on his sword and casting Vampiric Touch on Eldaran, which killed him (the mage's lightning bolt had softened him up considerably ahead of time).  Running back, he finally encountered Suna Seni, who had been out of the fight for awhile.  He was able to damage her reasonbly enough, but the group had a cleric who kept healing her up, so Yoshimo turned and whacked the cleric, who went down in two hits.  Suna Seni took a couple more and then their bounty was his to loot.

Unfortunately, he forgot where he was going and went to the slums when he meant to go to Waukeen's Promenade.  So he turned around and promptly met

Rylock the poisoned man:

His spells and specialty potions used, he had no choice but to just duke it out with Rylock's captors.  Fortunately, they weren't very strong.  He whacked the cleric first to stop him from healing them, and then took out the other two he could see.  A few steps closer to Rylock and he met yet another one; fought him with katana and he was down.  Rylock asked for aid and he agreed to it.

Upon entering the Docks area, he decided to take a shortcut and ran into a group of thugs.  These were much better trained than the goons who had Rylock and were able to hurt him quickly.  He turned and ran; they pursued, but he was able to loose them by hiding in shadows when he reached a suitably shady area.  He continued the rest of the way to the Harper Base and delivered Rylock to his friends.  Xzar met him on the way back and asked for help; he said he'd see what he could do.  It wasn't something he was going to waste time on at that moment, however.

No longer in the shadows, the thugs found him again and he found himself running from them again, too, right out of the district.  Fortunately, he managed to loose them on his way to (finally!) Waukeen's Promenade, but he knows they will be waiting for him whenever he returns.

Wand recycling. Sounds good for later on when you have Use Any Item.

Aren't the thugs like Amnish guards in BG1 that disappear after you haven't been to an area for a while?

Yoshimo seems like an interesting character to RP. I think he is primarily interested in survival. That seems a bit bland, but perhaps he is a spartan low maint kind of guy. Just my opinion though. I'd horde the heck out of everything though.

You can go into stealth before moving from one area to the next. If it's instant travel (inside Athkatla), you will still be hidden upon arrival, although the stealth mode won't be active any more - you will become visible at the end of the round. However, one round is usually enough to move out of visibility range of ambushers or thugs like the ones waiting for you in the docks now, giving you time to properly prepare for battle and at least open with a backstab.

Wands can be extremely powerful. Use a scroll of Polymorph Self and a fully charged Wand of Frost and you can easily take out most of the Unseeing Eye beholders.

Good alternative to the Shield of Cheezuron, if it makes you feel dirty =)

Sure, but as a thief you'll have to wait a long time to be able to use certain wands.

I tried this, but it doesn't really work.  The thugs followed him around, although they didn't start yapping (and attacking) until he was actually visible.  I file it under the way mages always know to cast true seeing, even though they couldn't have known anyone has suddenly appeared on the scene invisibly.

YOSHIMO UPDATE (miscellaneous tasks):

Yoshimo stole the amulet and returned it to Mae'var (this is when the thugs followed him even though he was technically still hidden).  He lost the thugs temporarily by going in the top door of Mae'var's guild and coming out the lower door.  Unfortunately, they had all regrouped back by the Docks entrance by the time he got there. (I don't remember this happening on previous playthroughs.  Something in BGT causing it?).  Edwin's requirement to kill Reyic Gethras is pretty much beyond him at the moment, so he'll wait a bit for that.

He got everything set up to get some fake ilithium (and real, too) and is now just waiting for time to pass before he picks it up.  He's also gone to the graveyard and found a man buried alive and found a guardian for an orphan.  A lead on the buried man was in the bridge district, so he visited there and discovered the perpetrators.  In the process, he freed another of their victims.  One of the perps got away, the other turned and fought, although he was hoping to get by without fighting anyone.  But for this once it was no problem as he simply used his newly acquired horn (from a nearby empty house) to summon a warrior to fight for him.  While in the bridge district, he also watched a play, which led to a lead for another job, and learned about some unsolved murders, which he thought might turn out to be lucrative.

He visited the sewers in the temple district, just to get an idea of the layout (hidden in shadows for the most part), met Roger and bought a potion bag and 3 oils of fiery burning from him before getting his quest to kill the sea troll.  Not wanting to take on a sea troll right away, he stayed in shadows past some gibberlings and finally met Keldorn.  Here he allowed Keldorn to join him temporarily.

They killed the gibberlings together (yeah, I know, it's not truely solo, but I wanted Keldorn's quest and I didn't want Yoshimo to get stuck having to take on the troll, the otyugh, and for all I knew, an alcove full of slimes, on his own just yet, so I had him sneak by, which Keldorn couldn't do.  I figure the gibberlings weren't worth much anyway.).  They got out, went and did Keldorn's quest, and then Yoshimo dismissed him so he could go back and spend time with his family.

He also met Jan and briefly hired him for the XP bonus (say they had an ale/turnip juice together), and got the quests to save Imnesvale and Trademeet.

By the end of all this, he had gone to level 12 and picked up a proficiency in quarterstaff and 20 more points in lockpicking (now at 85).
