In those cases, Gilrad, go into the game graphics options and crank up the Gamma to where you can manage it. Or do like I do and just throw a heavy blanket over your head and the monitor and pretend you're up late reading and hope your parents don't catch you up.

I'm kidding, my parents don't live with me and blankets are way too hot to do that here in Texas, 'scept for maybe about 6 weeks or so out of the whole year.
And as far as screenies, go, my experience is that most shots show up physically 'darker' than when they are taken. I've seen this with doing a lot of e-bay photos for my wife and my own screenshots of the toolset during building. So I tend to adjust for this by making the area brighter than I normally would for screen shots. It's just a few shades of brightness higher, but it makes a huge difference.
