Gameplay mechanics - they needed a merchant there so you could restore supplies and manage inventory space, and they chose him.

It most certainly is, but the fact that they chose Sandal is rather comical, if you ask me.

I'm guessing it's because of his enchantment, though.

Well i think Bioware told us he is making an appearance in Dragon Age II.

Maybe he'll be a recruitable character XD one can only hope

When I saw him alone like that, I took it to mean that Bodahn had followed the army in order to keep us well supplied (and make a ton of coin, of course) but he was attacked by Darkspawn and killed. With him gone, Sandal doesn't know who to follow, so he stayed put until someone came along to put him somewhere else. I would have felt incredibly sorry for him if I wasn't so overjoyed to see him --I was down to like 3 Lesser Health Poultices and 1 or possibly 0 Lyrium Potions, plus had run out of bombs and bomb-making material, which made my DC Rogue very sad. And yes, though there are potions and poultices aplenty up ahead, I didn't know that at the time, and I would have had to destroy a ton of stuff in order to carry it if Sandal hadn't been there to buy all my junk.

I assumed Sandal followed Riordan.

Sandal used his elite kung fu skills to beat every darkspawn to a bloodly pulp. He did this while crying out loud his battlecry, "ENCHANTMENT!".

He combined matter and anti-matter runes together; made doesn't matter.... *bazinga*

maybe he's like that River chick in serenity. That gets triggered and goes into full combatmode, kicking asses and taking names. Until she's untriggered.

I tend to think of him as an idiot Savant and perhaps a mixed breed (not full dwarf). He can enchant things but also has magical abilities.



Or.... he has one of these benevolent beings from the fade looking out for him, much like a guardian angel.

The answer to how all those Darkspawn died is magic.



Sandal is not really a mentally challenged dwarf, just a mentally challenged midget human mistaken as a dwarf with hidden magical abilities.
