ok,

let's use this thread to discuss the cool new staff/sword weapon that was shown in the promo image and trailer.

First, since this is a completely new weapon design, it would also mean that we would probably get new Weapon Talents for this type of weapon.

The question is............is this new weapon type, and its talents, going to be available to all classes of Hawke, or is it a mage-only weapon given its unique properties........

From what we've learned during PAX, the trailer Hawke is a Blood Mage.  Also, since trailer Hawke is carrying a weapon, wearing armor, and is proficient in melee fighting, it may also be safe to assume that trailer Hawke is an Arcane Warrior.  That wasn't confirmed by David Gaider, but it seems a strong possibility.

In the trailers, the staff/sword itself is used to channel magic attacks ( a fire spell and a lightning spell in the extended trailer ).  Based on reports of the demo, it seems when mages use their staffs in melee, it channels a certain element like fire.  So, this new staff/sword acts like a mage's staff, in addition to being a melee weapon, as shown in the trailer.

Since the staff/sword is a "hybrid" type weapon, perhaps it is a unique weapon to the Arcane Warrior spec.  That could also mean that the specific weapon talents and melee fighting style that goes along with the weapon would be unique to Arcane Warriors.

This could be a possibility, as we learned during PAX that DW ( and archery I believe ) are now restricted to rogues.  If this new staff/sword weapon is indeed a unique, signature weapon for Arcane Warriors, giving them a unique melee fighting style and weapon talents as well, that would certainly make Arcane Warriors feel distinct from regular warriors and rogues.

OTOH, if this weapon is NOT unique, and the fact that warrior and rogue Hawkes are carrying a staff/sword hybrid type weapon, that could also open up the possibility that non-mage Hawkes are still magically inclined..........

So......let's discuss...........

what are your thoughts and what would you like to see be done with this new weapon.............

I was thinking maybe it's more of a universal weapon. Something that you get by default at the beginning of the game, so that any class could use it.

I wonder if there will be specializations the same way as before... perhaps there is an arcane warrior spell chain that is just called Melee Magic or something now that gets upgrades. Signs seem to point that way. You might just be able to melee with any stave. One of the writers/creators wanted to have it so normals could use staves as a club also, but that didn't make the cut.

That's what i was thinking. I thought it was a default weapon so all class' have something to start from.

yeah........hopefully we will get some more info on specs ( if they are even in the game )......

it would also be nice if we had the ability to "cross-over" into the talent trees of another class, regardless of your initial class.

Like, say, you want your mage to be more proficient in melee fighting. You could choose to make him fight like a warrior by going into the warrior and Sword and Shield/2H weapon talents. Or, if you want your mage to fight like a rogue, you'd spend points in the rogue and DW talents.

The Ustream interviews have made it clear that TrailerHawke is a mage, possibly an arcane warrior, but nevertheless a mage, and the staff is a mage staff. So, basically, it's a staff with a blade on the end, rather than a crystal ball. The animations for melee attacks (which mages use when an enemy is a close range) have changed, but the info we currently have access to suggests the staff isn't a universal weapon.

that's why I have a strong feeling that the new staff/sword is a mage ( or Arcane Warrior ) only weapon.

Which I'm totally fine with.

But the Ustream interviews also said that mage's would get "limited" melee.

The Hawke in trailer, however, has more than just "limited" melee abilities.  He's not just using his staff to bash enemies if they get close.  He's a full-blown warrior going into battle.  His fighting style reminds of a monk/martial artist using a bo staff, or a Jedi/Sith using a double-bladed lightsaber.

I know the trailer is probably embellished for marketing effects.  But, I hope it's indicative of some kind of full-blown battle mage option that can fight like trailer Hawke.

In fact, I just rewatched the trailer again.  That's exactly how I want my mage Hawke to move and fight.

From what I read from Eurogamer and other sites is that "the trailer" does not represent what will actually happen in the game (DA II).

So, this is an interesting point you raise here. The question now is directed towards the team at Bioware. "Does the trailer reflect what we (as players) will be able to do in game as either an Arcane warrior and or other classes?"

Edit:  It would be awesome to have such a weapon with all of its abilities.

Too exotic for my tastes. Something I hadn't expected to see in any Dragon Age game.

yes, hopefully they will address that at some point.

Since one of the main focal points of DA2 is how they have revamped and amped up the combat, the trailer does demonstrate a more fluid combat style.

Now, of course, I don't expect we will be able to play EXACTLY like the trailer, since this is still an RPG and not a real-time action game like GOW.

But, given the description of how rogues played in the PAX demo, hopefully the staff/sword wielding mage will get a similar treatment in terms of combat style.

oh.....and I hope we will be able to customize the staff/sword..........say changing the color of the crystal in the bottom.........lol.

Edit:  And yes, it would be awesome if we could get a weapon like the trailer staff/sword with all of its abilities, and be able to fight like trailer Hawke!!  Please Bioware, make it happen!!  Image IPB

I doubt you could use it for every class or playstyle. But it looks like Mages and Warriors sould be happy.

Or rather have the option to use it. I'm a sword and shield fan.

y'know.....maybe this Staff/Sword weapon is Hawke's "signature" weapon that he/she starts with or acquires throughout the game.....

and maybe, it has different abilities and/or looks based on Hawke's class....

so, the one we saw in the trailer was Mage Hawke's version.

Perhaps warrior Hawke and rogue Hawke will get their own versions....

or maybe each class will have its own signature weapon........

The real question here is, Can mage Hawke use the iconic armor and weapon? Can Rogue Hawke?

Or is it Warrior Hawke only?

Because 90% of the players will want to wear his iconic gear, which is apparently, i read somewhere, already in the game. And if it is in the game, I don't want to lock myself out of it and run around in a robe with wood staves the whole game, looking like a complete tool like all non arcane warrior mages ended up doing in DA1.

It's probably a variant on two handed weapons, tying into that tree.

Was I the only one who thought it  was a fancy short spear at first? Also did they not in awakening add in a Battle Mage specialization?

yes, I want the cool looking armor, too.

It would be great if mages could wear armor similar to Flemeth's new armor, too.

The blur trailer has Morrigan beating people with her staff and doing blackflips. I wouldn't put too much stock in the aritistic style of the melee, though to be fair, according to PAX testimony the combat is more fantastical and martial arts oriented.

The weapon in the trailer is a new staff for the mages who can now use their staffs in melee combat. Though only when someone gets close. It is possible that each weapon, say standard staff or the bladed one, will have different animations for spells such as the little "Fire Slash" which seemed more like a flame burst just animated differently. But i am hoping the little orange orb at the base is interchangeable, like orange for fire, blue for cold, ect.

I am a arcane warrior honestly and i do so love being a mage, so i an really curious how the new mage turns out in melee combat. Hopefully they didn't take out the AW, it was such a iconic class if you ask me.

well, I hope that mages, especially Arcane Warriors, get some kind of staff weapon talent tree, as well as some actual warrior/fighting talents.

I totally agree, one thing i disliked about the arcane warrior's was the lack of any actual "Melee Moves" which is why i got a mod that let me learn such. Of course i had to rework my attribute points to do such but still, it was worth it. Perhaps some of the mages magic spells will be melee attacks if a enemy is close enough? We can only hope.

On a side note...Bioware, please give the Shield/Sword users more than just 4 base "attack" moves please? Every move for the Sh/S was a bash of the shield, and one that used shield bashing and sword. I can understand using a shield to attack, but i was hoping for more...slash moves.
