The weapon in the trailer is a new staff for the mages who can now use their staffs in melee combat. Though only when someone gets close. It is possible that each weapon, say standard staff or the bladed one, will have different animations for spells such as the little "Fire Slash" which seemed more like a flame burst just animated differently. But i am hoping the little orange orb at the base is interchangeable, like orange for fire, blue for cold, ect.

I am a arcane warrior honestly and i do so love being a mage, so i an really curious how the new mage turns out in melee combat. Hopefully they didn't take out the AW, it was such a iconic class if you ask me.

well, I hope that mages, especially Arcane Warriors, get some kind of staff weapon talent tree, as well as some actual warrior/fighting talents.

I totally agree, one thing i disliked about the arcane warrior's was the lack of any actual "Melee Moves" which is why i got a mod that let me learn such. Of course i had to rework my attribute points to do such but still, it was worth it. Perhaps some of the mages magic spells will be melee attacks if a enemy is close enough? We can only hope.

On a side note...Bioware, please give the Shield/Sword users more than just 4 base "attack" moves please? Every move for the Sh/S was a bash of the shield, and one that used shield bashing and sword. I can understand using a shield to attack, but i was hoping for more...slash moves.

yeah..........but I play on the console, so I don't get mods.............Image IPB

that's one thing I found lacking with AWs in Origins.  They never really felt like warriors, since they had zero weapon talents.  They just loaded themselves up with buff spells and auto-attacked.

Sadly, the downfall of Consoles, lack of customization. Thats why i stick with PC games. Though i am sure with some reworking of the system they CAN get mods on the PS3/360 for DA2, i mean last time i checked you can get mods for UT3 on the console...but thats UT3...

I do hope AW get some melee skills, even if its 4 different "Slash" moves with their staff sword i don't really care aslong as its 4 different attack moves i can use just about any weapon with it...Unless they are sticking with the "Make classes feel different" In which case, just let me use my staff to smack people reallly hard.

^that's why I'm hoping that the new staff/sword,and the fighting style shown in the trailer, is the unique melee style for Arcane Warriors or melee mages. Just like rogues now have DW, maybe this staff/sword is what will make melee mage or AW combat feel unique.

I mean, I'd be happy if all classes could use this weapon. But I definitely want my AW or battle mage feel like the Hawke in the trailer......

Well we may get some of the things seen in the trailer, though i am praying that we can disarm opponents, no pun intended, but i mean knocking weapons from an enemies hand would just be flat out cool.

Side note...I do hope they fixed the bare handed fighting animations...Perhaps a special rogue talent that lets them unequip their weapons and clorofoam rag an enemy? I was hoping for more...stealthy and assassin type rogues.

Back to the sword/staff...i hope we have a fair amount of customization and difference between them if there are more than one, if its just the one then make it truely unique. I want more uniqueness with my items, such as starfang.

Side note again...what happened to the space baby? It is technically canon because it does happen...

Well after watching the trailer I hoped my Warden could have blue fiery eyes, but no dice. I'm a little paranoid about assuming our mage will be able to fight like a ninja just because Hawke can in the vid.

I'm thinking it's just embellishment for marketing purposes. Kind of cruel of them though to dangle that in front of our faces when we can't have it. It just looks so cool!

maybe disarms can be part of finishers..........

and speaking of finishers........hopefully this time we will have more control over when they occur and which finishing move we get.........in Origins, it just felt really random..........cool.......but random.

I just hope that, when the game comes out, mages will NOT be left out of the revampled melee combat system.

For regular mages, I'd be ok with them just having basic melee attacks with their staff or weapon ( hopefully, you'll still be able to equip some swords and daggers depending on your strength/dex stats ).

But for Arcane Warriors or Battle Mages, I want them to be able to have access to weapon talents.  And hopefully it won't be restricted just to this new staff/sword.  They should be able to at least wield Sword and Shield and 2Hs, and have access to the same talents as warriors.  They are called Arcane WARRIORS after all.   DW would be nice, but it seems restricted to rogues, now.

If they take out AWs completely, and say that mages can only wield staffs, then I will be extremely mad and would seriously lose all interest in the game.

I don't care how much they've revamped the combat or art style.  If they're going to further pigeonhole the classes into narrowly defined archetypes ( warriors are big and strong who only carry swords and shields or 2hs; rogues are fast and nimble who only DW; mages only carry staffs and cast spells ), thus further restricting how WE want to create our characters ( they've already limited us to one race and one origin ), all in the name of making the classes "distinct," that would not be good.........imo.........and I won't even bother with the game.

especially when they tease us with such a cool trailer and a "multi-talented" Hawke............lol

I'm worried about this too.

The Origins cinematic trailers, especially the Sacred Ashes one, were all extremely cool.  Yet, the actual game's combat and art styles were vastly different from the trailers.

I know that DA2 is NOT going to be a full-blown action game like GOW or Star Wars: TFU2.

But, they ARE making the point that in DA2 the combat ( and art ) style is being revamped to make it more dynamic, fluid, and responsive.

They also did admit that trailer Hawke is a Blood MAGE.  They didn't say Arcane Warrior......which bothers me a bit.  But, the fact that they used a Mage Hawke ( instead of warrior Hawke ), and had him fight like a warrior in the trailer is..........interesting...........

In my little world, i loved the Dark Messiah game because there was no class system. It just mattered on what you chose to level up, to me that is true RPGing.

If you asked me, i would have the mage be the only class that could "Cross over" into the other ones...like a magically talented rogue or warrior, depending on upbringing. The thing i have a issue with is making it fit with the story...But i digress.

For the sake of them keeping things distinct, they will have the AW use just the Staff/Sword and i highly doubt they will be able to wield other weapons. In DA:O you didn't need to buff your strength to wield armor and stuff, you just needed a high magic and the AW specialization, but i of course wanted to be a ranger, so i upped my dex and magic and was a archer mage, with the use of modifications.

I think everyone here should take a step back from the awesome-ness of the staff-sword and consider that it might not appear in-game at all. I wish it would, I think it should, but I'm not going to get my hopes up that it will.

I think it may just have been Blur's attempt to showcase warrior and mage (maybe rogue with the leaping) at the same time in a video with combat.

Who knows, maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised.

I totally forgot about that ._. they did say that halberd's and such wouldn't be in the game, though this is more of a staff/sword...But you have a valid point to which i have to ask, Why showcase the weapon at all? Why not have Hawke beat around the Qunari Warrior with a simple mage staff?

I get your point for wanting to showcase the melee skills with the mage but why use that specific weapon to do it? Why not use a standard staff, is all i am asking.

Because the programmers at Blur thought it looked cool, and they were right. And if you just use a staff then it's just a mage whacking people with a stick. If you just use a sword it's just a warrior, if you just use a guy jumping and spinning all over the place it's just a rogue.

Staff-sword, magic , and jumping/spinning Hawke = Warrior + Mage + Rogue

So they used the staff sword to give a feeling of warrior + mage and the jumping around as rogue? I get the idea but...Meh, no point in argueing, its the internet.

^ but it wasn't just the trailer..........they also showed Hawke holding the staff/sword in the 1st promo image they released!

they also had a prop of the staff/sword at PAX which ppl were posing with and getting their pictures taken with.

and, in one of the ustream sessions, I believe Gaider said it would most likely be in. He even said something like "Why would we show something that wouldn't be in the game. I mean we could.....but we didn't."

so, most likely it will be in the game. it would royally suck if it wasn't.

now, as to whether or not Hawke can fight and move like in the trailer........that is another question which need to be resolved.........

I can't speak for the arcane warrior class, but the mage class will not be hopping around everywhere and fighting like a warrior.

Mike Laidlaw wrote...

No one said that mage melee attacks were particularly good, just that you don't look lame while you do them.

It's been said that mages will be permitted limited melee attacks. Limited, to me, means that what we saw Hawke doing in the trailer was uber embellishment.

yes, David Gaider also mentioned something similar in one of his Q+As during PAX.

And for normal mages, I'm fine with that.  They aren't warrior or rogues, so they shouldn't have access to weapon talents or the new "fancy moves."

But, if there is still a spec like Arcane Warrior, or maybe even Arcane Rogue, or some other melee/mage hybrid spec or class, THEN mages should get access to some kind of weapon talent tree, and their melee style should change to reflect that ( iow....they should get their own fancy moves ).

Even if they can only specialize in the staff/sword weapon, I'd be ok with that too, provided they get access to their own unique weapon talents and fighting style.

However, if even Arcane Warriors are restricted to just limited melee with their staffs, swords, or staff/swords, then, no..............that's not what I'm looking for.  That would be very disappointing.

I certainly hope there's a battlemage/arcane warrior-type spec, regardless of how exciting (or non-lame at least) the melee attacks are. *fingers crossed* While the limited melee mage attacks have been mentioned, maybe that was in referencce only to non-arcane warrior-spec'ed mage? Perhaps there's more in store for us if we're arcane warriors. Of course, if they meant limited melee attacks for ALL mages, well, I guess we can't hope to pull off any moves like the trailer version of Hawke (not that it's overly important to me - cinematic trailers usually are not the most accurate representations of actual gameplay anyhow).

oh, and please, please, let this staff/sword weapon be a weapon that does NOT require mages to sheath before casting a spell. Since it's part staff.........they shouldn't need to sheath it....

As already had been mentioned, Staff of Parlathan is a Staff for Mages only. Staves have both ranged and melee attacks. Further, trailers may embellish a little for dramatic effect.

I think you can safely view the trailer as a cinematic reimagining of an actual in-game fight which would not look like that at all.

It was a sword-staff wielded by a mage Hawke. Not a fighter Hawke shooting fire from his blade.

Mage specs have been revealed: They're Force Mage, Blood Mage, and Spirit Healer. Rogue specs have been revealed: They're Shadow, Assassin, and Duelist.
You may still get a magical warrior, only this time it'll be a Warrior spec, if it exists.

Sorry if I'm reviving this thread, but is this weapon in the game? And how do you get it?
