I went straight to Denerim after Lothering and stumbled onto the first quest in Trial of Crows by killing Paedon. I talked to the Messenger boy and that gave me the quest and made it so Ignacio would offer me the job of going to kill Paedon. However, Ignacio was standing next to Cesar at the time and mentioned the assassination attempt on me which hadn't even happened yet since I haven't seen Zevran yet... anyways, the problem is that when I go into the tavern, Ignacio tells me to check the chest behind him, but it isn't selectable! So I can't get the next 2 scrolls!

Yes,
Try doing it properly... duh.
If you have messed up the quest by doing it too early, and without Zevran, then the answer should be "don't".

There is no feedback to give...
If you have messed up the order, the only advice is to go back and do it properly.
Perhaps the chest is unlockable once you have Zevran.
If not... do it properly.
