I've had the occasional, entirely random GPF; ME1 is not entirely bug-free. Have you checked whether this is reproducible by trying to go to the office again?

If it is repeatable, most likely you have a corrupted file. Re-installation is generally the way to go there. (Unless the EA Downloader has some sort of verification tool you can use to check for bad files. Some DD services have something like that, but I've never used the EA downloader so I couldn't tell you.)

I reloaded the game after it crashed and the  error did not reproduce itself. I'll keep my eye out for if it does, however.

Just got this tonight.

Rendering thread exception

General protection fault!

History:GZLibFile:~GZLibFile()Address=0x1159ee15(filename not found)[in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\MassEffect.exe]

Address=0x3c38ce80

(filename not found)

Address=0xffccffff

(filename not found)

Address=0xffccffff

(filename not found)

Now why it repeats there at the end I have no idea. I finally got the game lag free without the system rebooting itself with the GTX 460 drivers that came on disc instead of the the 260.99 drivers. Also had to reinstall on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit drive because on the XP 32-bit drive I have, the game would crash and then the system would reboot itself. Different drivers made no difference there.

I only got the Rendering thread exception twice tonight and both times was while exiting a conversation.

I know ME2 specifically requires DirectX9.0c, and can be buggy with 10 or 11, I dare say ME1 would be the same. Install DX9.0c

Win7 allows both versions to run side by side.

The libraries for DX9 should be available on both of my operating systems. I always install directx when asked to ensure there aren't missing libraries. I do not see why having DX10 and DX9 would be an issue. Most likely this is another driver issue if not everyone is experiencing it.

Thanks for the input though.

If it's random, I would guess it's an issue with the drivers and/or with ME1 itself, and therefore not really fixable. Except, possibly, by trying out different driver sets. :/

I'd love to try some other drivers but sadly the card is so new there are only 3 driver sets available to it. The drivers need more polish. If it's not the drivers, like you said, it's the game. It only happened twice so far but I will be able to see more tonight or tomorrow when there's time to play.

Update - Reinstalling video drivers and reinstalling dx9 and dx10/11 seems to have fixed it thus far.  Sometimes libraries can go missing after uninstalling other games.  Sometimes drivers conflict too.  So a clean install on drivers was done again incase of a bad install.  That's not to say it won't show up again.  I had sound lag earlier.

Update -  Nope.  Still there but all it says is "General protection fault" and nothing more.  According to one
site I found it notes that this error can occur randomly with anyone
using a Geforce 8 series card and above.  Only happened once and again during dialogue options.

Quick Save is your friend just in case :P

More on this...

Though the game runs smoothly now, when the "general fault" occurs it erases your achievements and resets most of your graphic and sound settings. This has happened to me more than once now with this effect. But the bug thankfully has only presented itself once a day. Twice if I am unlucky.

I could care less about achievements anyway, unless they result in experience or unlocking bonus content.

Hmm, it always erases achievements & settings, without fail? I wonder if that's an indication of when the fault is occurring - during file manipulation.

Not exactly sure but this started to occur after installing BDtS dlc. Now it resets all achievements, tutorial, and sound settings and most graphic settings.

So every time I start the game it says "saving content" and I have to go through and change my options over again. The only exceptions are those you can set in the Mass Effect Config before starting the game. All others go back to their default. It's really weird, and annoying. If there is a file I could edit that would fix that then I would do it.

I wonder if reinstalling the 1.02 patch would help?

I guess I shouldn't complain too much, the game is running fairly well now that I've figured a few things with the new graphics card.

An update on this....reinstalling the 1.02 patch did not solve the problem. Not sure what the actual cause is.

I found one reproducible GPF

Close to the end on Ilos, when talking to Vigil, after exhausting all possible topics and getting the Let's move option.

When you do the investiage topics before you can get three of them (I do them in order) After talking about the keepers, clicking investigate again, always leads to a GPF.

Tried it about 6 times, 6 GPFs at the same spot

Has anyone with this problem tried any of the Omega drivers to see if those also act up?  They often cure problems for OLD OSes and cards, so maybe for relatively new cards as well, it's possible to try them out

Incidentally, some nVIDIA drivers force players of Bioware games to play "Windowed" for some reason . .

Save early and often. I have random GPFs when in conversations. Only thing I've found is to save just prior to a conversation so as to not lose too much ground.

@lofte: Seeing as you have not provided any information at all on the type of system you are running, then noone can offer you any advice apart from what DJRackham has. Read the "How to" thread stickied at the top of the forum, and post accordingly.

Thanks both of you, like many others the problem hasn't occured again and if they do they're very random lu DJRackham said. I just save frequently as he suggested but if it continues I'll check out the How To skicky at the top of the forum, thanks Bogsnot1 for pointing me in the right direction, I was simply using the search function of the forums to find info. and wondered if anyone had found a known fix for this that seemed to work for everyone as it's quiet an old game now.

Hi I installed the game + patch today and started playing it, have had two rendering thread exception: General protection fault! in the first hour. Game crashes out. Always during conversation. I would've thought these kind of bugs would have been ironed out after a few years.

That same thing always applies, as does one other.  The forum's own Find / Search is crap.

Use Google or Yahoo and add this redirector criteria:

The only thing that jumps right out is that your graphics driver is nearly a year old; that should be new enough, though.

P. S. (Two days later, actually) ~ ~ what service pack level is that Windows XP up to?  SP-1 won't be enough.

I keep getting the same exact GPF after exiting conversations in the Noveria Sub Labs... hasn't happened for the first 19 hours I've been playing the game. Anyone figure out a fix...?

It's simply distasteful that not ONE employee of Bioware would comment on this post - found near the top of the tech support page. This has nothing to do with one's system - maybe with a version of DX installed. It didn't happen for the first 5 days I played (first time ME); now it happens all the time, always during conversations. Unfortunately, Bioware sits on a monopoly of *in principle* awesome RPG games. But every single game eventually becomes a chore, working around the numerous, rarely fixed bugs - simply ignored, like here. In DAII, I found myself saving my 2h warrior with a one-handed blade to get around a silly bug that miscalculates grossly attributes if you don't; here - I played 5 days, all my achievements were erased after a power outage, and now this. My formerly immersive game play now consists mainly of crossing my thumbs 'will the game crash and again erase all my achievements?' and 'is it time again to make a safety copy of my profile so I don't have to go back too far when the game crashes next'. Bioware acts like a car company that sells the best car in the market - except, you know, occasionally a wheel falls off. Instead of fixing that, we move on to the new, equally buggy model. This is amoral to the highest degree. If at least a single employee would participate in these discussions. But no. As I run W7, I have Directx 11 automatically, which is supposed to be backward compatible. It diagnoses fine using the MS dxdiag tools; patches to DX 9 runtime cannot be installed as the MS web download says I'm up to date. This is on Bioware's end; somewhere. And that's where it'll stay, because, I assume, the team is currently busy fixing the bugs in ME3 - for about 2 months, until what hasn't been fixed will remain unfixed forever.

I spent 7 hours (totally awesome download speed - I have an very fast internet connection in principle) downloading (from Origin directly) and reinstalling the game. Now it crashes all the time, every time with the worry - and inability to confirm for sure - if the profile file got corrupted. I'm sorry, but this is unprofessional in the highest degree.
