Yes you can pass by the High Dragon and return later. Just don't get rid of the horn that calls him down.

it's a spoiler...but you'll see it coming a mile away in game....big cave, dragonlings, and how the disciples described "it".

I'm glad i already completed the urn quest before I saw this post. The dragon is like opening a gift on Christmas to a fantasy RPG lover. Don't ruin the surprise for people who haevn't done this quest yet.

And there you go spoiling more for even more people!  I didnt know about this stuff until I was well into the dungeon, and it was a nice surprise for me.  Be more careful with what you say please.

I take it you missed the stickied post at the top where they say not to put spoilers in subjects?

Some people come here to find answers to quests they're stuck on and not to have other things spoiled for them, but that point's moot since the mods have requested spoilers not go in subjects at all.

This was posted in general discussion first, I believe. Hence the people unhappy at spoilers. Mods should comment in the threads they move, though.

Apparently you missed the sticky right under it.

The point is that there are rules against putting spoilers in the headers in order to give people some chance against reading something they don't want, if they go into the thread then it's fair game but otherwise it's just common courtesy not to be ignorant and potentially ruin something for someone when it wouldn't take any effort to not put the spoiler in the header.

And those saying "It's called Dragon Age!" that's no excuse and you know it. Fight Club may involve a club about fighting but it's not what the main character fights at the end now is it? Dragon Age could've involved people flying around on dragons, or the last battle might be against the mages who entered the Golden City and have been manipulating it from behind the scenes (don't worry I haven't said what really happens at the end, though it did get spoiled for me in the General forum right again in the header, and when I complained I got insulted).

The OP himself has said sorry for posting the spoiler in the header and said that he didn't mean to spoil it for others, mistakes happen, but I notice that the only people carrying on this thread after he apologised are mainly those who don't care about their fellow forumites...

^This.

Personally, as I heard about the ashes ingame, the first thing I thought was "Wow! So that trailer was not just a great piece of 3D cinematic but a real hint to the actual game!"
I honestly don't understand how can people hear "Urn of Sacred Ashes" and not think immediately "big bad dragon awaiting".

I didn't use the horn to call him down to fight him, I just used a spell to attack him.

Since everyone's being touchy about it...

*MOAR SPOILERS* :P

I don't think you can fight and kill the high dragon if you complete the quest for the crazy cultist dude and destroy the Ashes. Instead, you get the crazies and the high dragon for your army, which was sorely tempting for me until Sten was all like, "Erm...you wanna encourage the worship of a lizard?" and I felt stupid.

How did you get them for your army? When I asked them, they just said they will wait it out and then rise from the ashes.

**How to down the dragon SPOILER**

I didn't come back for it. I was level 9 or 10 when I went there and took her down the first time. Make sure you have plenty of healing items (lesser and normal health poultice was all I used) and normal Lyrium potions. My party consisted of the main character of course (weapon and shield warrior), Shale on default scrapper tactics, Leliana on custom melee tactics, and Wynne on custom healing tactics.

As you come down the ramp, then just a bit further, there's an area flatter and more open the the surrounding terrain. Call the dragon down, she'll smash down in the middle of the group. Immediately have Wynne cast group heal. You can try positioning your party spread out a bit before calling the dragon down I suppose, but I didn't bother.

Once the initial shock is over and everyone is healed and back to their feet, I positioned Wynne in the small hole (next to the flat area, green colored, on the left if you're looking back at the caverns entrance). She stayed there pretty much untouched through the fight. The rest of the group fought the dragon in the center of the flat area. I used the main character as a tank. I kept the dragon facing towards the entrance of the Sacred Ashes temple, and positioned Shale and Lel behind him. This helped to minimize the amount of fire damage they took.

Now... keeping everyone alive is the trick. Wynne would heal anyone who hit 50% health, and I would pause and manually tell her to group heal after large attacks from the dragon that damaged the other three members. If both heal and group heal were on cooldown and healing was needed, I would pause and instruct whatever member to heal with an item. The main character and Shale used health poultice (went through about 10) while the lesser health poultice (about 5) was sufficient to nearly fill Lel's health. Wynne only got damaged once, but a group heal fixed that. Wynne also went through about 4 Lyrium potions.

Once in a while, a character will get chewed on and take massive damage. In my case, it was always my main character who was tanking the fight. Obviously, the character being chewed on can't use items, so it's up to the healer to keep them alive with well-timed heals. Heal with a normal heal first (when down to about 25% health), then group heal if a second heal is needed. It's a bit of a waste of group heal if no one else is injured, but it's better than losing the tank and everyone else getting wiped out.

Anyway, a lot of healing, a lot of pausing, and a good plan will down the beast. I managed to down her with one death (poor Lel). I revived her, as the dragon was down to about 10%. Of course, Lil got the pleasure of mounting the dragon's head and shoving both her blades into the dragon's skull.
