Is it just me or was it completely trivial compared to Harvester?
I think maybe something in between Harvester and this is the right difficulty.
I only tried it on Hard so far, but I basically just nuked the dragons when they appeared and otherwise the boss. Had Finn set to default tactics so he wasted mana, had to give him a few lyrium pots. Bet it can be done without them though.

Yeah, it's pretty trivial. Even on Nightmare.
I soloed the thing on my mage without suffering much damage. Blood magic took care of the adds and the rest was a matter of whacking the big bad with my new axe.

The battle was really easy, I was surprised. Too bad there wasn't more to the DLC.

It was intentional. Bioware has mentioned that Golems was designed to be ultra hard in terms of combat to challenge the gamer looking for more intense combat. Witch Hunt was more of a standard DLC.
That said, I found the Varterral pretty tough for my Origins imported character. But my Awakening imported character ripped through it.

I walloped it easily enough wasn't till I got to the very end I actually realized I'd played all of WH on Hard difficulty, as I'd imported from a Harvester save!

Origins was mildly difficult all the way through.
Awakening was a joke.
Darkspawn Chronicles and Leliana's Song were both somewhat difficult but managable.
Golems of Amgarrak was intentionally difficult, and it delivered it's difficulty greatly.
Witch Hunt gave you, your fourth specialization, and threw in a Mage. You were bound to win.

Really? You guys had trouble with Golems? I beat the damn thing EASILY on NIGHTMARE difficulty.
Of course, that's probably because I had an Arcane Warrior with 85% Res all, 150 Phys/Mental Res, 81 Armor, 181 Defense, 225 Damage (according to the char page), 606 Health, 479 Mana (with sustainables active), etc. etc. etc.
AW is so OP :|
Why on earth does WH give you ANOTHER Specialization?

You mean that spider looking thing?
Yea, not so tough. But then, in this game, I think it was more about the journey (as dull as that was, anyway)
