 I've been playing this game for a lifetime and I've played it a zillion times. But I rarely run thieves. So I have to ask a couple noobie questions. 

how do you improve the thief "set traps" ability and the "hide in shadows"? 

For set traps, my MU/theif is the no-reload thread is now 13th and has a 10 to set traps?

For  hide in shadows, she has a 25.
I know stealth is  related to "move silently" and hide, and you can add to "move silently" on the level up screen, but can you change hide in shadows?

both of those you can add to on level up (maybe you need to scroll down further).

Like dante said they are supposed to be there when you lvl up so just scroll down. I know set trap is at the bottom just after detect illusion.

Position also seems to have an effect when pickocketting.

Only if he's in your party.

That was what I was thinking... this cheating is why a certain part of Icewind Dale where you have to wade through endless waves of thieves to get to a mini-boss, is hell.
