The whole slaves-in-chains thing is what's freaking me out.  I don't even know if Qunari mages have that kind of status - slaves are people, at least. These guys look like dehumanized thralls.

Yep and quite a contrast to the austere, stately background.  Very effective artwork IMO.

and for the qunari, this sort of treatment to the mages is casually seen as a way to protect themselves from demon influence.

it could be possible that, because they have been treated like machines ever sinds they could preform magic, they have gone insane.

i doubt there intelligent, (they probably never had any schooling) and they are probably taught from the beginning to do everything there handler tells them.

put those things together and you get something like a every powerfull raging bull (no pun intended) that attackes when it is told to.

From the wiki:

"They have their own mages. The saarebas (from the word bas or thing/object) are considered defective tools-- but the qunari don't waste those, either. The qunari mages are literally kept on leashes, held by an arvaarad (their "handler"). Should they ever be seen to perform forbidden magic, their tongues get cut out to prevent a mage who has been possessed by a demon from communicating and possibly corrupting someone else."

So, yeah, they're pretty much little better than tools in the eyes of their fellow Qunari, assuming the wiki is correct. Kind of makes you sick to the stomach to think about...

I was under the same impression, probably from reading the same source. I want to know how these mages view life under the Qun, and I think "under" is the right word - "in" is too inclusive. But you'd be surprised at how some people participate in their own denigration...

This explains those ungainly masks:  'cursed' with magical ability as they are, fully dehumanized (dequnariized?) and objectified by their society, they're considered tools rather than individual, sentient beings.  Charming.

a quanari doesnt question his place in society, not even a mage, it seems...

Indeed. Suddenly the human and elven circles look so much better.

I was gonna say the same thing - "dequnariized". But then I remembered that some Qunari effectively dequnariize themselves when they reject the Qun, and live as exiles...don't remember their official term, though.

Perhaps these mages have tried to leave, or perhaps they accept their place in the Qun. People can be sad that way.

Yes, you're right-- that's their "unleashed" animation when their handler has set them to attack. So they've hand their binds released and are just standing straight, I assume... if they ever really stand straight at all. Qunari mages are more like attack dogs than proud warriors.

I'm reading the fourth book of The Wheel of Time series now and this instantly reminded me of Seanchan and the damane. Not a very subtle reference but I approve anyway.

Kind of reminds me of the seanchan and the a'dam collar's they use to control channelers (Wheel Of Time) thoroughly dehumanising, I thoroughly approve.

An excellent screenshot and now my biggest fear for Dragon Age 2 -that it would look bad- has been rectified. I'm really looking forward to interacting with more qunari and I hope we get a qunari mage that still has his tongue as a companion.

Not too shabby. With alot of focus on Qunari I'm wondering if they have more of a main role this time around. Is DA2 still considered a prequel or does it happen along the same timeline as the original game?

*nods*

My hopes exactly. Someone who takes off her mask and kicks the Qun to the curb. Or perhaps is "rescued" (forcibly liberated?) by Hawke and co. This person might undergo an incredible identity crisis...and I would hope it pays off.

I believe it starts during the Blight of DA:O and continues on for a decade.

Interesting, I wonder if they actually mention the exploits of the Warden and the Blight at all, or bypass it altogether citing it being too complicated to import player choices from the original game.

From what I've heard your choices will import from both Origins and Awakenings. However, you shouldn't expect them to impact the story for this game too heavily given all the variables.

You will be able to import decisions, so I imagine that there will be.

They said that choices are imported and do actually matter. How much we do not know yet, but there will be a mention of your choices at least.

What does that have to do with anything?
