I'd like to see the mage make an impressive entrance by killing his master too, and then Hawke can team up with the mage and defeat the other qunari mages. The character seems like something Bioware could pull off very well.ImoenBaby wrote...

My hopes exactly. Someone who takes off her mask and kicks the Qun to the curb. Or perhaps is "rescued" (forcibly liberated?) by Hawke and co. This person might undergo an incredible identity crisis...and I would hope it pays off.

Hurlock Emissary, IMO.MarginalBeast wrote...
I'd love to see a qunari mage as a teammate (though he'd technically have to be a Tal'Vashoth). For one thing it'd make for an interesting character because of the way qunari mages are treated, and secondly, most mages in fantasy are either female or thin, wimpy-looking males. It would be refreshing to have a mage who is physically intimidating.
Ogre Emissary would be sweeter, though.

Why are all of them all hunched over and goofy looking? Even the badass Qunari looks hunched over.
The three Qunari mages have their hands bound behind their backs-- that's why they're hunched over like that. The main Qunari in the foreground isn't hunched over, however. He's standing straight. Not sure what you're looking at.
His head and chest are lurched forward. I'm not sure what YOU'RE looking at.

This would be cool but I really wonder about the mental condition of a Qunari mage. If you're treated like a dog all your life would you really be able to get along as a free person in normal society? Would you have the same social and language skills as a normal person? Could you take care of yourself, would you have a weird kind of Stockholm Syndrome love for your handler and fall to pieces without him?
I'd love it if one of the writers would chime in on that if the answer isn't spoilery.

Yes, you're right-- that's their "unleashed" animation when their handler has set them to attack. So they've hand their binds released and are just standing straight, I assume... if they ever really stand straight at all. Qunari mages are more like attack dogs than proud warriors.
The Chantry is suddenly a paragon a kindness.
This is going to make me dislike Qunari a lot.

The masks look ridiculous, they're completely ruining the overall good design of the Qunari.
I have to say I disagree. They are a unique looking design. Pretty original imho.

The thing is, we really know next to nothing about the Qunari culture, aside from what little bits we've garnered from DAO, the codex and Dev comments. The Qunari are the more tribal of all the DA species and I think these sort of masks really suit them
I dont think their tribal. Honorbound, but not tribal.
The Chasind and Allamari are tribal

No one should be treated that way. I don't care if they're dangerous.

Attack dogs have to be put down or caged for their whole lives. It's sad, sure, but there's no changing it.

And yet are still given rights. My point is, in modern society, yeah, we'd be obligated to protect and care for them, but then, in a middle of a war? There's not enough time, resources, or even the people skilled to help them to call for their rescue. They are mages--very strong and large mages. Do mage prisons even have the space to contain them? The ability?
Today there's help, then there isn't. Who knows, maybe this is a decision in the game.

The whole slaves-in-chains thing is what's freaking me out. I don't even know if Qunari mages have that kind of status - slaves are people, at least. These guys look like dehumanized thralls.
"They have their own mages. The saarebas (from the word bas or thing/object) are considered defective tools-- but the qunari don't waste those, either. The qunari mages are literally kept on leashes, held by an arvaarad (their "handler"). Should they ever be seen to perform forbidden magic, their tongues get cut out to prevent a mage who has been possessed by a demon from communicating and possibly corrupting someone else."
So, yeah, they're pretty much little better than tools in the eyes of their fellow Qunari, assuming the wiki is correct. Kind of makes you sick to the stomach to think about...
I would almost bet money that we get a Qunari Mage as a teammate. It would fit well, one that wants to be free and get way from that kind of life they had to live. I would help one. How they are handled makes me sick. One more reason to help change the world.

Perhaps. I do believe we'll get a qunari companion. If a qunari invasion is really happening, I don't see how we can have an actual qunari that follows the Qun with us.
Of course, I don't want a companion that can't speak. That I can't pet, at least.

at least the masks serve their purpose, if a qunari mage is possessed by a demon, it won't be able to influence others through deals and trickery because the mage can't talk due to having their tongues cut off and that we can't see their facial expressions.

Ignoreing all the praticalities and details of such a upbringing: The potentional is not present in an animal. It is always present in a "human", so to speak.

except we don't know how severe is the qunari's conditioning of their mages. for all we know they may have found an efficient method that turns mages into broken obedient domesticated living beings.
until new info is released all we can do is speculate

The Jet Li film "Unleashed" aka Danny the Dog is about a human being raised from birth like an attack dog. It covers the points that both of you are making, and is a pretty decent action flick to boot. So I guess I'm saying... uh, watch it. The end!
