Would a barbarian or cavalier be better for ToB, assuming the following:
  • barbarian has 75% damage resistance for 20 rounds, cavalier has 65% for 14 rounds
  • barbarian churns out 27-36 per hit, cavalier does 34 damage and dispel magic every hit
  • barbarian is immune to charm, hold, confusion, maze; cavalier is immune to charm, hold, fire, poison, magic
It's been so long since I've gotten beyond the siege on Saradush that I've forgotten a lot of the ToB enemies' tactics. I like to think that the barbarian, even with his inferior damage output, has the upper hand on account of being less dependent on spells for damage resistance. The cavalier can match the barbarian but takes so friggin long to get to a state of near-perfection (7 million, the way I want him). I haven't played a paladin solo beyond the Underdark, so I'd appreciate some advice from those who have. Is it worth the struggle and wait?

Carsomyr is good against mages, but it's not the best melee weapon.

Played correctly, the paladin will deal more damage and will usually be better protected as well (low level cleric buffs, better armor, Carsomyr...). Sure, that requires buffing, but except for in very few cases (Watchers Keep level 3) that needs never be an issue for somebody who knows the game.

Can I vote "Other?"

Berserker. They can wear heavy armor, wield any melee weapon, and are immune to almost everything when berserk.

The heavy armor difference can be negligable, depending on what non-plate armors you have available (e.g. shadow dragon armor or enhanced Aegers'Hide, etc) so only a difference of base AC 1 vs -1.  Similarly, unless you have the true grandmastery fix enabled, putting ***** vs ** in a weapon doesn't get you much.

Don't forget the Barbarian has greater speed which can allow for different tactics.

The damage resistance is actually 80% (20% barbarian reduction, 20% defender of easthaven, 40% hardiness) for piercing and slashing and with Roranach's Horn, it's 130% crushing resistance.

The better AC is not the only advantage that full plate offers. Most of the really good armors come with additional resistances, that can make a lot of difference.

I would also go Berzerker over Barbarian. I've tried both and the Barbarian rage just does not last long enough, although it has the advantage of not causing fatigue afterwards.

The advantage of the berserker over the cavalier on the other hand is limited to his berserking immunities to certain effects and the fact that he needn't be human (racial bonuses), though if he is human, he could dualclass (and multiply his potential).

The cavalier has better physical (and elemental) resistances, deals more damage (unless True Grandmastery is installed), and has of course also more Magic Resistance with Carsomyr. Having access to low-level cleric spells is advantageous too.

True, but most of it is elemental resistances (the one plate has immunity to backstab, I don't consider +5% magic resistance a huge boon) and the enhanced Aeger's Hide has +25% resistance to fire, cold, acid and Immunity to Confusion.

In general I agree that Berserker > Barbarian, but there's an option for the armor that really negates that downside.

5% on top of 60% is more like 12,5%. But you're right, it is not a "must" and a barbarian is perfectly playable without heavy armor.
