Will we be able to converse with them when and where we choose, as in DA:O or will conversations be under their control as it has been since?
They aren't using the Awakening system again if that is what you are asking.

Umm...I think I missed something. What is this rivalry of which you speak?

Rivalry means "we disagree on something fundamental." You can still be close, but that disagreement is always there, and you will have arguments about it from time to time. Possibly, you will even change their mind. Or maybe they'll change yours? It's hard to guess. But it's not hatred. It's just conflict. And conflict, or possibly paprika, is the spice of life, as we all know.

It's like when Leliana is pro-nug and Oghren is pro-nug-in-sauce and they argue vehemently about it, but still sleep with each other (behind your back)silentassassin264 wrote...

So how can you tell if they still liked you enough to romance you but had were at odds with you? Is it like romancing someone closed fist as opposed to open palm in Jade Empire or something?tmp7704 wrote...

From the sound of it, more or less. I'm not really sure how the feedback on relationship state is going to function, because from the description the game has both a "i disapprove of what you do but it doesn't mean i can't sleep with you" and "i disapprove of what you do and wish you died in fire" and "i approve of what you do and my tent is over here" states, and that may be hard to fit on the old -100+100 bar, but guess we'll see.silentassassin264 wrote...

I'm almost seeing the approval system as an optional hate--like, rivalry doesn't necessarily mean they really dislike you. They're rivals with you. Which is very interesting, but I hope we get the chance to be complete SWEARWORDs to our party members.
The more other people elaborate on the idea, the more I'm warming up to it. At first it seemed oddly unlikely, but I was thinking that disapproval meant they hated you the way Leliana will hate you, you know?
You can still be a nug-licker to your party members, and this will sometimes cause them to leave your party forever and ever. However, this is actually different from rivalry. Rivalry means "we disagree on something fundamental." You can still be close, but that disagreement is always there, and you will have arguments about it from time to time. Possibly, you will even change their mind. Or maybe they'll change yours? It's hard to guess. But it's not hatred. It's just conflict. However, will our interactions with our companions be similar to DAO: Awakening? In Awakening, the companions speak to you when they feel like it but will not speak to you if you clicked on him or her. If you do happen to click on them (sometimes accidentally), they will rush you off or say some odd ball comments. That really killed immersion for me.

Gaider said at PAX that it's a mix of both systems.

This sounds really, really interesting. But... if Bioware keeps fleshing out the RPG experience like this, how will we be able to tell the difference between their games and real life?Mary Kirby wrote...

It's okay, they go to great lengths to remind you it's a game by stripping customization options from your characters and turning them into bare-bones artificial "classes" instead. It evens out in the end.Axekix wrote...

I thought he said it was a mix of both. That it won't be like Origins or Awakening because they don't want the systems to be the same as they were.

I can't help but think this is a perfect setup for a joke, yet I can't come up with anything.
I am so disappointed with myself.

You're contracting yourself!
That's true, but in truth it's neither the system in Origins or Awakening. I wouldn't call it a mix, really, as there are follower elements in DA2 that were in neither game.
That said, there are indeed extensive conversations and lots of party banter. As someone mentioned, this isn't the sort of word budget we had in Awakening.
