Will we be able to converse with them when and where we choose, as in DA:O or will conversations be under their control as it has been since?

They aren't using the Awakening system again if that is what you are asking.

Approval in Origins worked that they either loved you or hated you. If they hated you, they never spoke to you at all except for yelling at you.

In DA2, they want the negative approval to work like they disapprove of it but they also discuss with you (different dialogues though) and can explain to you stuff. You're able to convince them otherwise and stuff.

Rivalry means "we disagree on something fundamental." You can still be close, but that disagreement is always there, and you will have arguments about it from time to time. Possibly, you will even change their mind. Or maybe they'll change yours? It's hard to guess. But it's not hatred.  It's just conflict. And conflict, or possibly paprika, is the spice of life, as we all know.

So it would be like if Dude Hawke was a conservative Republican and Pirate Lady was a liberal Democrat- they'd disagree, be rivals and have fundamental different views on things but at the end of the day Hawke could still romance Pirate Lady despite having vastly different views?

And about convincing a follower to change their mind- so say Pirate Lady was all the way "rival" and Hawke debated with her on something and convinced her the error of her ways- would that just slowly make her approval less "rival"?  Or would it be some huge moment where the follower's hostile/friendly status sort of does a mirror image flip, so if they were all the way rival before they'd go all the way friendly? Just seems if you have too many back and forth debates with varying degrees of success in changing a follower's mind, you'd end up with that follower being sort of neutral and in the mushy middle over time....

It's like when Leliana is pro-nug and Oghren is pro-nug-in-sauce and they argue vehemently about it, but still sleep with each other (behind your back)

I know they won't be using the object triggered conversations, but I had the same kind of problem  with Witch Hunt, so I thought I'd ask. I find it very offputting when you click on a character hoping for some conversation, and they tell you to get back to work and stop bugging them.

So how can you tell if they still liked you enough to romance you but had were at odds with you?  Is it like romancing someone closed fist as opposed to open palm in Jade Empire or something?

Does this mean a Schmooples-Oghren hatemance is not out of the question in the future? I couldn't resist asking! *smacks self for being bad*

From the sound of it, more or less. I'm not really sure how the feedback on relationship state is going to function, because from the description the game has both a "i disapprove of what you do but it doesn't mean i can't sleep with you" and "i disapprove of what you do and wish you died in fire" and "i approve of what you do and my tent is over here" states, and that may be hard to fit on the old -100+100 bar, but guess we'll see.

My charismatic mage Hawke will enjoy his many rivals and worshippers.

"Friends, Fellow Countrymen, Compatriots: Heed my words! The Chant... IS A LIE!"

*gasps from the crowd*

"Not only is the chant a lie, but also everything else you believe in! We are all actually in the fade! LYRIUM IS MADE OF PEOPLE!"

*shocked silence then quieted muttering*

"I understand your confusion, my friends. Everything we have been taught, everything we hold dear... all for naught, you say?"

"WHAT WILL WE DO HAWKE?!" Shouts a planted companion from the crowd.

"FEAR NOT! I have the answers, my brothers and sisters! Magic has shown me the way! The Maker sends me as your new and glorious prophet, to lead you to glory, power, and unending happiness!"

*chaos erupts in the crowd, people start punching each other*

"Follow me, my new believers! I shall preach to the lowliest, to the neediest! meet me at the Brothel, and bring your most beautiful daughters and sons, so that I may impart to them the seed of knowledge that I have been given, that it might be rightly shared with the world!"

I'm almost seeing the approval system as an optional hate--like, rivalry doesn't necessarily mean they really dislike you. They're rivals with you. Which is very interesting, but I hope we get the chance to be complete SWEARWORDs to our party members.

The more other people elaborate on the idea, the more I'm warming up to it. At first it seemed oddly unlikely, but I was thinking that disapproval meant they hated you the way Leliana will hate you, you know?

You can still be a nug-licker to your party members, and this will sometimes cause them to leave your party forever and ever. However, this is actually different from rivalry. Rivalry means "we disagree on something fundamental." You can still be close, but that disagreement is always there, and you will have arguments about it from time to time. Possibly, you will even change their mind. Or maybe they'll change yours? It's hard to guess. But it's not hatred.  It's just conflict. However, will our interactions with our companions be similar to DAO: Awakening?  In Awakening, the companions speak to you when they feel like it but will not speak to you if you clicked on him or her.  If you do happen to click on them (sometimes  accidentally), they will rush you off or say some odd ball comments.  That really killed immersion for me.

Gaider said at PAX that it's a mix of both systems.

I like the idea of either the companion or me changing each other's opinion based on my actions and choices I make in the game... which is similar to real life situations.  A person will not simply stop being your friend because of something you do or say without fully understanding the reason for your action or why you decide to do something he or she does not comprehend.  Having the ability to explain your reason to said companion is a good thing.  We are rational beings... we simply do not do things just for the sake of annoying someone (well, some people do, lol).

So, if this is how it will be in DA II, then it is truly an awesome improvement .

This sounds really, really  interesting.  But... if Bioware keeps fleshing out the RPG experience like this, how will we be able to tell the difference between their games and real life? :o

I thought he said it was a mix of both. That it won't be like Origins or Awakening because they don't want the systems to be the same as they were.

I can't help but think this is a perfect setup for a joke, yet I can't come up with anything.

I am so disappointed with myself.

It's okay, they go to great lengths to remind you it's a game by stripping customization options from your characters and turning them into bare-bones artificial "classes" instead. It evens out in the end.

I'm tired. What I mean was that they mixed both together until they get a unique system.

*rereads the above a few times*

... I don't even know if I make sense anymore.

Well, he did say in another thread awhile ago that it wasn't a mix.

That's true, but in truth it's neither the system in Origins or Awakening. I wouldn't call it a mix, really, as there are follower elements in DA2 that were in neither game.

That said, there are indeed extensive conversations and lots of party banter. As someone mentioned, this isn't the sort of word budget we had in Awakening.

I see.

I'll commit ritual suicide.

I don't want to talk about shoes in the middle of the Deep Roads, however in certain areas at times of obvious calm, I'd like to engage in some banter, for example after venturing to a Dragon's lair, defeating it's minions and standing over the beasts corpse, some relief banter may be applicable.

I thought the murder knife wasn't going to be in-game?

It's not. But I used it anyway and now my Varric avatar is dead.
