I wonder what would happen if only two squadmates survive the suicide mission in ME2. The Virmire Survivor is certain to return, but perhaps we'll get Wrex back and I really hope to get Liara back as well. I doubt they will introduce new squadmates, so I think we will get our old squaddies back as a precaution of ending up with a three-member squad (The two SM Survivors+Virmire Survivor)

I honestly don't think that your squadmates from ME2 will return. What if some player's teams only had two people alive in them at the end? That wouldn't leave much choice for them, and thus the quality of the game would be decreased because they would feel like they had much less available to them. Of course, that could just be a statement saying, "This is your fault. Prepare next time, and you can have your team back." I'd not like that, even though all of my team survived the SM.

And the darker story? I don't mind, as long as it doesn't feel like you're under the control of an unlikeable power. And please bring back the feeling of accomplishment! In ME2, I always felt like I was getting nothing done. Sure, I survived a mission that was pretty risky, but then you show me a clip of the galaxy about to be destroyed by hundreds upon thousands of Reapers! Don't get me wrong, the game was phenomenal, but I'd love to feel like I'm getting somewhere.

And about the release date, if it took as long as it did to develop ME2, then ME3 should be out by Q4 2011 or (more likely) Q1 2012. I don't know when they'll announce it, but there were some games announced at E3 2010 that are coming out this year that I wasn't prepared for. Bioware might not do the same thing, but you never know. We might not get an annoncement until early 2011 or even E3 next year. I doubt they'll do that, though.

However, this is all just my opinion and speculation.

They'd better bring back the old squadmates. From both games. Recruiting a whole new squad would feel like a waste of time after doing it twice over already. Most people will not have lost all but two squadmates, Liara and the Virmire survivor and Wrex could all return (or at least Wrex could send someone to replace him, as leader of the krogan clans he might not be able to come with you). Honestly, the only new squadmate I'd really like to see is Shiala, the (now green) asari commando from Zhu's Hope. She wasn't really subtle about wanting to come along with you in ME2 after she didn't have responsibilities taking up her time, and her voice actress did a great job, so I say include her. For the rest, bring back your ME1 squadmates, add them on to whoever you have left from ME2, and that should be enough to handle most of what you come across.

I agree with you, but what if the 2 survivors are Zaeed and Kasumi...hmm.

Still, you'd have around 3 squadmates as minimum to 15 squadmates as maximum if what you say is true.

In ME2 dead IS dead, they will NOT appear in YOUR ME3 game, BW has said that several times and if Shepard dies then it is game ending, NO ME3 import. THE squad you have in ME3 will be your surviving team from ME2. Someone (Thane, Jack, Samara) will not return because you need one empty slot for Kaidan/Ashley to return (whether you like them or not, BW's choice). IF you played for a minimalist squad (2) then you are in for a world of hurt. If you killed off some (squishies) then your team could be stronger. Kill off the wrong ones and you've got BIG problems. ME3 is about the choices YOU made in ME1 & ME2, thus the warnings that those decisions WILL have "dire consequences" that you must suffer for by making the wrong/stupid/lame ones.
The goal of ME3 is to defeat the Reapers, there are many paths (squad makeup & decisions). Your success will be determined by what you do, pick badly and it will end badly. I imagine that more than a few will start all over again from ME1 thru ME2 to ME3 to achieve THE ME3 ending that they want.
Release date, when BW is ready. When will they announce it, for maximum marketing impact. In the mean time, we all wait with open wallets for the next DLC. I suspect that there will be NO DLCs after ME3, UNTIL BW announces the NEXT (unnamed) Mass Effect trilogy.
I have NO insider info, just from paying attention to what BW says and how the game plays.

Agreed. If the ME2 squad doesn't return in ME3 than the plot of ME2 will seem, in retrospect, like a colossal waste of time.

But if we actually worked to ensure their loyalty and survival...

Yeah, that's the only proof we have that they'll survive.

Here's a question: how many people, if they learned that none of the characters from the first two games were returning as squadmates, would refuse to buy ME3, or be somewhat hesistant about it? I imagine this would not be an insignificant number. In addition to losing certain buyers, an all-new squad would necessitate hiring new voice actors, creating new character models, writing entirely new backstories, and finding some way of explaining why none of the previous characters are returning that doesn't make everyone facepalm when they hear it. Throwing out the entire cast doesn't make sense from either a story or business perspective.

Well it would sure make me hesitant, but I'd still buy it, since it's Mass Effect. But yeah, I get what you mean.

It would be...amusing if different love interest combinations gave you...different results?  What if your two partners fall in love with eachother?  what if there's a "working" menage a trois?  what if other squadmates have romances behind your back (kasumi x jacob??)

Rather than just an equal "ME1 fights ME2 and then you make a choice" across all characters.  not saying every combo should be unique, but it'd be amusing if there were at least a few uniques depending on "mixing personalities".

those are a few that jump to mind that I couldn't imagine having equivilent scenarios playing out.  Not even just grouping scenes based on me1 LI's...mostly because the females you can get with in 2 are so drastically different from eachother..Ashley against Miranda would probably play out differently than Liara against Tali, as would...anyone against Jack.

There's twelve different conflicting paths...alot of the femshep romances I can easily see playing out similar, but maleshep's are just so varried that it feels like they'd need more for those scenarios...

But Liara against the ME2 dudes....especially since thane might only be arround for a few months....I can see compatability between a Drell and an Asari, what would happen if a mind melder met someone who has perfect memory recollection....it would just be wildly different than Jacob vs Kaiden...and who knows where Kelly or Morinth could fit into all this...(probably not at all)

I personally would still buy it as would alot of other people but the thought of it not including any returning squadmates is just not going to happen. I know never say never, but it is NEVER going to happen. I think your LI, if you have one, is guarenteed to come back and i'd say the same for Garrus (he is pretty much your best mate after all). So you will get some originals at least, but aside from that everyone else is totally a guess.

I think Samara, Zaeed and Kasumi will not return as squadmates in ME3. Samara's oath to Shepard ends after the Suicide Mission. Zaeed's and Kasumi's contracts end too, and they don't care about the Reapers.

You're insane.

Zaeed, despite being limited to a smaller group of owners, is easily one of the fan favourites, if not the most liked squad member. He absolutely will be showing up.

I reckon most of the characters from me2 will be in me3 except for maybe kasumi and zaeed. there is no way bioware will make another mass effect where we need to recruit another team as we have already done this twice. the third game will be more story focused, as in stoping the reapers, if we need to recruit anyone it will be a galactic army of all the alien races in the galaxy. i have no doubt Liara will play a significant role in me3 but not as a squad mate, her resources from being the shadow broker will be very beneficial in taking down the reapers.

That’s my thoughts anyway.

Although would be cool to see some banter similar to Gimili and Legolas from LoTR about who has the most kills.

Something like that would be pretty entertaining. Loved it in the last movie when legolas takes out the giant elephant and gimli shouts "That still only counts as one!"

best line in the movie!
   1:10-end!
 (best over all)

Zaeed is the only squad member that I find absolutely indispensable in combat.  Granted, I've modded the game so he can weild a M76 Revenant, which makes him even more badass, but as primarily a Soldier he makes the perfect squadmate.  Hell, his loyalty skill is the only one I ever use.

He's just fun as hell too.  I love the comment he makes at the bar in Afterlife.

Honestly, the only other squadmates I take out with me are Garrus, Grunt, and Miranda.  But Zaeed?  Every mission, every time.

Frankly, it still pisses me off that he can't be the other fire team's leader...
