I realize it's blasphemy but I officially hate the Revanant

LotSB did it in for me.

Even with 6/6 the recoil is atrocious and simply not worth it anymore.

Now, with the Mattock, it's truly unnecessary, though, even before the Mattock I barely used it.

Revenant is fun on Easy/Normal if you've got Hardened AR since you can take some damage.

On a higher difficulties, getting close enough as to *not* miss your targets all the time becomes an issue.

That being said, with proper modding, you can tweak the recoil and accuracy on the PC version.

I love Revenant. Sprinting towards enemies, activating AR when close and mowing everything and anything down with Rev+Inferno ammo is awesome. It is not meant to be a precise weapon for mid range combat. And with some practice these attacks are easily doable on Insanity.
That said, I enjoy Widow Soldier too, so it is good to have so many options if you want to play a Soldier (I have 3 :)).

For me soldier's are all about going full auto 2 feet in front of whatever your shooting and turning it into cooked giblets with inferno ammo. It's Rambo or nothing, insanity included.

Really the Revenant tore apart the SB for me rather quickly. I was playing on Normal but in any of fights througout the DLC it worked rather nicely.

The revenent is for when you get fed up with challenging fights. Whip it out and mow them all down - it's ridiculous. And that is only with a modded adept using heavy barrier; I haven't played soldier, but coupled with AR it must really decimate the enemy forces.

I wasn't a fan of it either. It felt like Rambo overkill to me instead of the short controlled bursts of assault rifle fire that I like. The Mattock is awesome even though it's not your typical assault rifle. I fire the heck out of that with my soldier.

The Revenant can take a bit of getting used to, especially after making the jump from the super accurate Vindicator battle rifle. It really is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, though, not to mention its ridiculous heat sink capacity. It can be fired semi-accurately at longer ranges, you just need to do it in short bursts. If it was any more accurate it would be extremely imbalanced.

To use the Rev effectively you need to get the AR Accuracy upgrade as soon as you can and be using Hardened Adrenaline Rush. Heightened AR is really better suited to the Widow and Claymore where each shot is few, far between, and precious.

Like everything worthwhile in this life, the Revenant requires some effort to get real value from it. I love my Revenant, I almost never have to scrounge for thermal clips for it.

TBH the recoil wasn't that bad, just took some getting used to, or experience with other shooter game(s). Besides, taking damage and dealing it out was easy with Improved GSB, albeit took a bit more effort on Insanity.

Well, grab the Widow/Mattock combo and stay away from the one you don't like.

I made the mistake of holding off on my Revenant Soldier run until after the Firepower Pack came out. That was also the playthrough in which I tried the Mattock for the first time. I can see the appeal of the Revenant, but I prefer the Mattock.

I like the Rev... but even with the Accuracy upgrade it still does not outdo the Mattock or Vindicator in my opinion. I almost always play soldier and I prefer to be accurate and deadly as opposed to spraying and and taking damage.

And another one not being able to tap-burst fire. Seriously, if you just tap-fire, you don't hit the muzzle climb factor, amking this weapon deadly accurate at least for medium ranges. And if you tap fast enough, you don't even miss too much firepower.

Tap-burst-firing, why is it so hard to find out, sigh!

About half the folks who don't like the Rev say you can't hit anything with it.
The other half say using it is such overkill, it's no fun.
Both sides can't be right.
I agree with Neofells Nebulosa: Fast tap-burst fire is vastly preferable to using the Rev as a fire hose. Blaze away only at "can't miss" range.

The way I see it, if you tap-burst fire, you might as well take a weapon like the Vindicator or Mattock, since those do a better job of providing accurate fire downrange and have higher damage per shot. The revenant is a machine gun, and machine guns are meant to provide suppressive fire.

That may be justified with personal preferences and I don't say it is wrong, but the Revenant still stands out as a brilliant "Assault" Rifle:
-Vast Ammo reserves, especially when tap-burst-firing as opposed to spray and pray you will absolutely never run out of Ammo. Vindicator has its known problems with this due to its limited Ammo supply.
-Whilst being moderately useful at medium ranges (I concur that Vindicator/Mattock and Collector Rifle and superiour in medium range combat), it gets beasty at shorter ranges. Anything coming at you will inevetibly find itself full of Revenant rounds. One can of course argue that in said situations, the shotgun that the soldier has too is the better choice, but with the Revenant you don't even have to switch (arguably useful against husks, killing them off at near-medium range with burst-fire, obliberating them once they get into full-automatic range without having to take the risk of getting stunlocked by their melee attacks whislt you switch for the shotgun).
-No muzzle-climb in AR makes this weapon very efficient in said mode and its high rate of fire benefits the Heightened AR because the weapon really fires a lot of rounds even with 70% diletation.

Of course, there is no thing like THE assault rifle, everything is based on preferences and therefore every opinion is valid, however I find myself in need to emphasize the Revenant is not nearly as inaccurate at anything besides point blank range as some users in here say it is.

And before you ask, I am a widow lover, no Revenant fanatic trying to bribe you Image IPB

edit://
Just so we understand each other, I don't mean Vindicator-like tap ......... tap ......... tap or Mattock-like tap ... tap ... tap ... tap ... tap. I mean taptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptap. That way you get almost as much rate of fire as when on fully automatic but you don't hit the muzzle climb as it only sets in in fully automatic fire mode. Basically, when doing as I advocate for, your index finger will be in fully automatic mode, not the Revenant. And I dare to say that your index finger has less "muscle" climb Image IPB

I played Infiltrator and Adept a bunch of times before I tried soldier, and based on what people were saying about Revenant, I took that when I did my first soldier playthrough. I tried with quite a few missions, but went back to the collector ship and took Widow to finish the playthrough - and have never picked Revenant again. It might be a great weapon, but the learning curve was too steep for me - reminds me of learning to play vanguard.

I say this because the build up to the Revenant was big, but when I played it it was a letdown. Maybe that is why people don't like it.

I vastly prefer the Mattock to any of the other ARs.

Odd thing is, I prefer the Viper to the Widow as well -- I don't like having to take that long between shots, line the target back up again, etc.

The revenant isn't so bad if you shoot in short controlled bursts.

btw, whats the mattock?

Everything > Chuck Norris now.  His internet meme died as soon as he embraced it, let alone when he started speaking out as a religious zealot.

The new 'Chuck Norris' is becoming Dolph Lundgren

[Edit: Ok something on topic]

I have yet to try out the Revenant but look forward to it on my current Soldier playthrough.  I also look forward to having that save just before the collector ship so I can also roll a Widow file :D

The Rev is awesome on an Adept. Mod the save or the c.ini and you'll laugh at the smg's all day long.

However, without mods, it would be hard to choose the something other than the Mattock after AR training on the collector's base...

I love how so many people say something like "The Revenant is absolutely awesome if you mod the game!"

That's not really the point, is it?

ANY weapon is awesome if you mod the game to make that weapon awesome. You could mod the game to give the Predator (first pistol) the rate-of-fire of the Tempest, and the range, accuracy, and hitting power of the Widow, too.
