Replacing the icons with a list (like the quest logs) would go a long way in improving it. As it stands I have to mouse over the icon to see what each codex entry actually contains. This makes it frustrating if you are looking for specific information.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who dislikes the Codex...

I love the codex system. The information provided in it makes the game world deeper for me. I don't find the numbering system difficult to use at all.In the pc version, when you hover over something, you don't just see numbers...the subject material of the particular codex is plainly spelled out for you.
To those complain about there being too much to read, guess what: It's not required reading. If you don't want to read it, then don't.

I have more books on my bookshelf than I have games on my games shelf. If you don't want to read then don't. Take the 50 xp and move on. I enjoy it. Your post is irrelevant and obviously meant to flame because you are not forced to read anything so why complain about it.

Well I hope that the number system, is something which will be patched in the future, to make it more user friendly. Shouldn´t be hard to do, or not?
Otherwise to have a codex is a great thing and let´s you delve more into this world. And if you don´t care...well just ignore it.

I like the codex, I also like one woth titles better, but why not change the number to the title when one is activated. That should be patchable right?
as for those who don't like it, don't read it.

I love the amount of information available.
The problem is the presentation.
Page numbers only make sense when you have a contents page or index that will tell you which page you want. And I'm ambivalent about having to scroll through long barren empty sections to find the new stuff (or the old stuff I want to re-read). In a way it's nice to be shown that there are pages missing from your character's personal filofax (anyone remember those?) but that could be achieved with a simple "pages collected / total" counter.

I'm a bit confused... in the PC version, are you all saying that the Codex entries don't have any titles at all? JUST numbers? In the 360 version, each entry has a distinct title, but, as I mentioned earlier, they don't appear in the Codex in any particular order. To find out which ones I haven't read yet I have to scroll down the entire list, looking for ones which have a dim highlight on them.
For the PC version, do you have slots from, say, 1 - 200, which you fill in the blanks? I'd imagine that would be as difficult to navigate as the scroll-through-the-entire-list system we 360s have.
In any event, the Codex could have been done better. Good idea, poor implementation.

I was blown away by the codex in ME and it turned out to be one of my favorite aspects of the game. The codex here in DA isn't any different as far as it being a great source of information about the world you're in.
The number system is not that good though. A listing similar to the quest list would've been much better in my opinion. I also really like the idea brought up in this thread about having quests contain links to codex entries for ease of use.
Take a look at the Quick Look for Aion on Giant Bomb for a better idea. The quest/map/codex functions in that game look excellent.

I do prefer having books, notes, etc go in the codex rather than them using up valuable inventory slots if I think I need to hang on to the information (I can't remember everything I ever read and you never know when you need to have it handy). That being said, I don't like the numbering system much.

The only thing I dislike about the Codex is the size of the font and the frequency in which it updates. I don't have the best eyesight, so having multiple pages to read is a big strain on my eyes.

And who is forcing you to read it all? It's there to satisfy people who do like to read lore. It's not required to enjoy the game.- Archangel - wrote...

I totally agree with you Now you will understand why the Ratings in the long run will continually degrade the ranking of this game 5 stars down to 4.....Too many design choices that overall disappoint.Zenthar Aseth wrote...
The codex is pretty bad. They should have done it like Mass Effect or The Witcher.. with pictures and clear titles.
But that's why another company will strive for superiority over this game.... it's very good but so very weak in many areas...Come on it's 2009 give us better stuff instead of Hype.

it sounds so technical, i thought it was an error the first time i saw it. agreeing with ReggarBlane nad Bane V2 i feel it could be utilized better. using title names or something along the lines of mass effect (if you played it). what number 372 is, i can't remember but give it a name and it would make more sense

Codex is good but the numbering system is a little odd. Oh well usually I read them as I get them so it's not much of a problem.
I'm laughing at the people who are making out as if this is some type of horrible game breaking flaw xD

I don't like having to spend my playing time doing a lot of reading. It would be nice if you could access your codex online so you could do it outside of the game.

I like the Codex quite a bit, then again, I am a nerd for background lore. I can say it is much much easier to navigate on the PC then the console versions. My only major complaint is the same as what's been mentioned before, the numbering system makes no sense.

Great content and some very useful info for strategy and more detailed background on the game world.
Not too thrilled with the numbering / grid layout with lots of empty space between entries, but minor meh.
One thing that would be an improvement - if you pick up a note / book, whatever, just SHOW it right away. Don't need the extra clicky bits to open the codex and try and locate the thing you just picked up...

I wish the social site would put online links to the codex entry you have uncovered while in the game. That way we could catch up on Codex reading when we are away from our gaming pc/consoles.
I like reading that stuff but when I play I don't want to stop all the time.
