I have a level 59 Soldier that I've been using, and I want to boost her to Level 60. However, I also want to get the achievement for playing through the game on Insanity. The problem is that my build isn't anywhere near optimal, and I'm afraid thad will screw me over on Insanity.

Now, after looking at the skills, and considering my playstyle, I've decided to focus on maxing the following skills:

* Assault Rifles - my weapon of choice. Later on, I'll also put points into Sniper Rifles, but Assault Rifles are my first priority.

* Combat Armor - gives the ability to wear Heavy Armor, and also a skill. I can't remember if it gives Shield Boost or Immunity, but I want both maxed.

* Assault Treining - gives more health, and either Shield Boost or Immunity, but again, I want both maxed.

* Spectre Training - numerous bonuses, and gives Unity.

* Electronics - my bonus skill. Chosen for it's boost to shields, not for it's skill.

* Shock Trooper - the Shock Trooper spec gives me better bonuses for my playstyle than Commando does.

This, of course, begs the question, "If you know what you're focusing on, why do you need help?" The answer is simple: I know where I'm going, but not how to get there. I don't start the game at Level 60, so I need to know how to distribute my skill points as I go. If I focus on one skill, the rest suffer. However, if I try to even out all skills, I'm weaker all around. How should I distribute my points?

First, if you made a mistake assigning points (done THAT plenty of times), then you get to start all over again with a NG. Remember that you can START Eden Prime on casual/normal level 1 but to GET the Insanity achievement JUST BEFORE the Beacon (when you are opening the crates) change the level to Insanity and leave it there until you finish THAT game (do NOT start another NG nor LOAD any other). The level MUST be on Insanity BEFORE the Beacon explodes.

In ME1 you have to complete the ENTIRE game (I think that Pinacle Station is optional, not sure about BDtS). I usually play as a Sentinel (Kaidan), but as a soldier, I do Sniper Rifle (TONS of EXP), Commando (+21% weapon damage), 11 assault training, 12 Lift or 8 in electronics, 12 shotguns, 4 Immunity, 11 or 12 Spectre, armor Armax Predator L X or M X, upgrade (Kenetic buffer, medical) plus X% cool down.

In ME2 you ONLY have to SURVIVE the mission, ie you do NOT have to do all/any of the N7 side quests or even save the whole squad/crew. Shepard has to defeat the Collectors and LIVE to fight another day.

I'm going for the Insanity Achievement in ME1.

If I take my Level 59 character and start the game again, I will be given the opportunity to re-allocate my points? I was under the impression that once points were set, you couldn't take them back. Therefore, I made this thread. If I'm given the option to re-allocate points at the beginning of the game, then there's no point to this thread.

Ok, the ME1 Soldier

First let me say that you'll have a much easier time with Singularity or Lift as a bonus talent than Electronics.  Soldiers are already unstoppable tanks with just Master Immunity (and Adrenaline Burst), let alone if you take Shocktrooper specialization.  That plus Heavy Armor, plus to Med Ex armor upgrades; the extra shields from Electronics would just be unnecessary.  If you want good shields, endgame wear the Predator H X armor.  Other classes usually wear Colossus X, but since the Soldier has Master Immunity to cover all the damage reduction needs, Predator H X is a better fit.  Meanwhile, Singularity/Lift would synergize greatly with the Master Adrenaline Burst (hell without them, the Soldier's Master AB just goes to waste with only Immunity and weapon skills to use it for).  Singularity can disable a bunch of enemies at once while you focus on the stragglers.  Lift can get an enemy out of cover and in the air, perfect for sniping or hitting with an ally's Throw.  Both biotics can be use to disable enemies before they get the chance to cast Immunity on the higher difficulties.

How to progress

First you'll want to put one point in your class talent, this will get you some health regeneration, and enough points in your bonus talent to get it's Basic version.  Next, take Pistols to 3 for Basic Marksman.  From here, you won't be placing any more points into weapon talents until you max Fitness for Master Immunity.  Don't worry, Basic Marksman is more than enough to handle the early game.  Once you get Master Immunity, build whatever you feel you need.  If you want to use a particular weapon, build that talent up, or if you have a great piece of Heavy Armor you want to wear, put 7 points in Combat Armor.  If you want more health regeneration, build up your passive, or if you like making use of your bonus talent, get that up to Advanced and then Master.  It's almost impossible to go wrong with an ME1 Soldier once you get Master Immunity.

No you can not.  I'm not sure what JockBuster was talking about, but then again he was also talking a lot of ME2 in an ME1 thread so...

I actually don't see any reason to put any points into Pistols, as I never use them. I think I'll put the points into Assault Rifles, as that will get me Overkill, and increase both damage and accuracy. Other than that, I think I'll follow your advice.

As for the bonus talent, I see your point. Electronics is just more of a 'fire and forget' sort of thing. I'm not big on Singularity because every time I've used it, it's been hard to get a bead on enemies (since they keep moving around the thing). I'll give Lift a try, though. I'll just have to unlock it first (I'm actually missing a bunch of the ability achievements. Another reason I'm wanting to pick up the first game again).

Master Marksman makes Pistols in ME1 a better Assault Rifle than an actually Assault Rifle with Overkill.  Still I can understand not wanting to reuse the weapon that already on all the other classes, which is why I only suggested getting Basic Marksman.  Reason being a lvl 60 Soldier, even with maxed Immunity, maxed AB, maxed passive, maxed bonus talent, and Heavy Armor unlocked still has enough points to almost max 3 weapon types.  I usually always max both Sniper Rifles and Shotguns (which takes 4 measily points in Pistols anyway) on my Soldiers.  The third can be either Assault Rifles or Pistols.  Just take a quick glance at the first two posts in the thread I linked to earlier to see what I mean among those 4 maxed out Soldier builds.

Also, I see many people make this mistake or maybe I just use it differently than everyone.  Singularity is not for enemies you want to shoot, Singularity is to keep a big chunk of your enemies disabled (i.e., not shooting you) while you take out the other enemies that aren't floating.  Even on my Vanguard I used it as such.  Singularity/Lift to get some off my back while killing those are are still able to shot at me, they die, Sing/Lift again, clean up.

That's just crazy enough to work! :P

I'll have to give that a shot.

Lol, and when you occasionally do want to damage everything floating in a Singularity, just chuck one of those highly underused Grenades, a squadmate's tech powers, or your own Master Carnage blast (if you choose max Shotguns).

Soldier w/ Singularity + Liara + Kaidan = Tons of control, and your lethal weapons.
+ Liara + Garrus/Tali = More Tech goodness
+ Kaidan + Wrex = Tank squad plus all the tech/biotic goodies
