I would say bullmastiff
Great picture. The markings even remind one of the kaddis war tattoos.

I got tree'd by a mastiff when I was a kid (though hindsight tells me now the big thing only wanted to play). I've had two of my own since then, and in my experience they're certainly amazing household guardians, coupled with a genuine affection for family and a real love of hogging the sofa and watching tv, they're my kinda dogs.
And yeah, with that big barrel chest, I thought of mastiffs as being pretty close to the mabari physically. Maybe not in attitude mind you... one of ours was regularly seen off by a spaniel, big soft lump - only way he would have harmed you was by sitting on you

i think the mabari is loosely based on the rosie o'donnell breed.
While the facial features are similar, the "o'donnell" isn't as cut.
I think the Bull Mastif best describes them. The picture of one above hardly does the breed proud. Whether it's a bad angle of the photo, or that dog just isn't akc correct.

Thanks for the replies, and for the photos. Funny thing is that when I went to get my daughter from the bus stop today, there was a man there with his dog that looked a lot like the Cane Corso you posted. We're going to be looking for a dog when we buy a new house, and I'm thinking of something with a mabari like build.
Some of these breeds aren't great with small children. Other than the Mastif being clumsy, they aren't usually aggressive. Corsos can be highly protective, which can be a problem if your kids have different friends coming in your home frequently. Both breeds are short hair and need to be kept inside during the winter, depending on you location. I prefer dobermans, ecspecially around children.
EDIT: Both the aforementioned breeds range from $1,200 to 1,600. You can typicaly get a akc Dobie for $900

Sounds like the Mastiff is the way to go. My daughter has a form of autism that makes her socially awkward, so she doesn't have many friends. But still, wouldn't like her to get nipped.
Get the Bull Mastif. The English Mastifs are massive (175 to 225 pounds) and drool everywhere. However, given your case, I will once again recommend a Doberman, given thier attentiveness and delicate handling. I've had one for 9 years now and by far the best larger breed I've owned.
