But the XP gains for both containers & traps is HUGE! This is the main reason I want it for my Rogues, plus I dislike being relaint on others, items, specific talents or spells, etc.

I believe that if you have a Rogue with a high Cunning (50 or so), Device Mastery won't be necessary to open any chests.  The same goes for Coercion on your Warden, where if you have a decent level of Strength and Cunning, you won't need more than Coercion III on any skill check in the game.  Feel free to get all of them to be safe, but it shouldn't be necessary.

For lockpicking, you need 70 cunning - (Deft Hands level) * 10

So without Deft Hands you need 70 cunning, with Device Mastery (Deft Hands 4) you need 30 cunning.

Deft Hands also gives you trap detection and disarming. I guess since you've never used a rogue before, you've been using Alistair or Dog to disarm traps the old-fashioned way (ie running into them).

Just to make it clear, you don't need Deft Hands at all to be able to open locks. You just need to be a rogue.



All Deft Hands does is decrease the skill level needed by 10 for each point.

Heh, I've never had her ask me for money. I always get Lel first. Of course, with lel you can just pick the long on the cage too

She asks for a donation whether you have Leliana or not.  She only asks the first time you talk to her, so if you've talked to her before you talk to her about Sten, then she doesn't mention it. I think she calls it 'tithe'.

Funny thread. There is a mod that allows you to bash chest open. So maybe that is the way to go for you OP.

Incorrect. Unlocking/disarming gives you XP equivalent to the difficulty level, which can go as high as 60.

I haven't seen 60XP from a door/chest that I can remember, but then again my memory is bad from drinking too much crappy wine in the alleys . . .



Picking the cage? I'd think it would be more XP to get the key to unlock, or is the XP the same once you complete the quest to free Sten? Or is it *more* XP because you're picking the lock and then completing the quest to free Sten? Or is it . . . wait . . . what was the question again?



I just know it's free XP and if there's one thing I love, it's free wine . . . I mean, free XP! Yeah, uhhh, moving on!

I have seen 60 xp from locks and traps. But there aren't many at that skill level.
