No female qunari, I see.  *sigh*  That's a pity as a female Vashoth mage would've been a lively and consequential companion for a male Templar PC.   Booooooo to the bean counters!   Image IPB

Could you see a Tal'Vashoth romance? Who knows? Considering that they come from a culture that hasn't had romance in hundreds of years, what are the chances?

I can't honestly see a connection here. They no longer follow the Qun, a good reason to try out everything forbidden.

Of course, the right question here is - do their species have natural psychological connection between love/romantic feelings and sex? They probably do, they're just taught otherwise by the Qun.

A huge opportunity to learn from Hawke here. Learn the hard way, with iron pry bars, leather thongs, whips and other equipment... Probably butter and nug fat will be involved... Fake cat ears... An additional dwarf..

Do rebellious teenagers take up phrenology and foot-binding in the real world? Just because your culture doesn't have something doesn't make it enticing. And why would they naturally want to gravitate away from, "I have guilt-free sex with multiple partners at regular intervals for my entire adult life" to "I'm going to pine and then, if I'm lucky, just have sex with that one guy"? Not a trade up, really.

Well, an unbelievable coincidence - I've once knew 2 teenagers who were really into phrenology. Nothing good came out of that - only racist ideas and head injuries, but at least such things are better than drugs and alcohol.

But returning to my original point - you've just explained that Vashoth enjoy the way Qun proposes sex to be, right? Multiple partners for the sake of breeding for the good of Qun etc. Does this mean that this horned race naturally do not gravitate towards choosing a partner(s) for a whole life? Or at least for some period? One never would want to bed his Kadan?
Don't they have any.. Parental instincts? They're just born such, so they consider it normal to separate a child from it's mother? There are reasons why people try and change something just because if feels right. There were times and places in our real history when women were denied human rights, for example. Things change because they feel wrong.
As far as I understood Vashoth abandon their brethren because they feel something is wrong in the Qun, right?

They're probably on par with chances of freshly recruited Grey Warden to defeat threat to the world not seen in hundreds of years, archdemon et al Image IPB

Oh Mary, you are such a tease. Granted, I will accept it if it doesn't happen. And of course, thanks for answering some of the questions here. Very much appreciated! Image IPB

Look, I know you guys are fixated on the name thing because you didn't get to find out what Sten's was, but it's really not an improvement to know.

I keep telling you, they don't use them. And there's a damned good reason.

Um. Wow. I'm pretty sure most of us were just curious for curiosity's sake.

So, wait, there's absolutely no connection whatsoever between love and sex for them?  Possible scenario here: let's say that Qunari A has developed a very close emotional bond with Qunari B.  They love each other AND they feel strong sexual desire for one another.

If they were to have sex, would that act have everything to do with the sexual desire and nothing to do with how they feel about each other?  Would their brains not make that connection because of how they've been conditioned by Qunari social practices?

Qunari are told who to have sex with. It would have nothing to do with either desire or affection.

So, no one ever breaks the rules and has sex with who they want because of those factors?  Obviously they'd be re-educated if they did, but it does happen every now and then, right?

You stated this in another thread awhile ago:

"They form emotional bonds with one another. They just
don't sleep with each other to express it. And if they do, they get
re-educated by the Ben-Hassrath. So, y'know, not exactly encouragement
there."

Which sort of implies that it does happen on very, very rare occasions. Or did I misinterpret that sentence? It's quite possible that I did. I'm just curious.

The griefing potential in that is awesome. Do Tamassrans ever arrange some really weird pairings for the lulz, just to see reaction of their subjects when they're told who they're going to have sex with?

You're grasping at straws. Sentient creatures have emotions, so do the Quanari, but the Quanari practice an extreme version of self control to the point that their society is hive minded and has no *passion* to it. They are, almost literally, emotionless drones in a machine.

Tamassran: You'll have sex with...a Nug.
Qunari: ...
Tamassran: An explosive Nug.
Qunari: No way!

"Because I want to" is almost never a reason for Qunari to do anything. They're a people who zealously believe that every single thing they do in life is for the benefit of their society as a whole. They view selfishness as the worst possible quality a person can possess.

Individuals fail occasionally. But it's not generally fear of the Ben-hassrath that keeps them in line. They do it on their own because otherwise they can't live with themselves.

I don't understand you. What am I grasping for, exactly?

And I would not consider Sten to be an almost literal emotionless drone, but, um, sure.

The Qunari literally remind me of the Vulcans from star trek. But Spock learned to have fun and have sex. Can't a Qunari do the same?

We definitely aren't getting a Qunari romance, although a Tal'Vashoth is not completely impossible (although still incredibly unlikely, so don't get your hopes up).

Honestly I just really want one as a companion, romance or not. Sten was one of my favorite DA:O characters. Even though I know a new Qunari companion wouldn't be exactly like Sten (and I wouldn't want him to be anyway), I still think he'd probably be really interesting.

Yeah I know. It's just wishful thinking. Mary seems dead set against a tal'vashoth romance or even a companion. I wonder why. Making a character that is known to follow the rules and be cold as stone turn into a kind-hearted, lustful person in bed makes for interesting storytelling. The Qunari don't have romance? Perfect. Make it an ''awakening'' of thier mind and body! The Qunari can't be so rigid as to deny the pleasures of life itself. What kind of existence is that. Once Again going back to Vulcan mythology

Romance sure, but I don't know why you think she'd be opposed to a Qunari/Tal'Vashoth companion. I didn't get that impression.

I mean, it's quite possible that there WON'T be one simply because it wouldn't work with the current setting of the game (the Qunari seem to be rather antagonistic in DA2). But we won't know anything until more information is released.

Well it seemed like Mary implied that the Tal'Vashoth were so radical and violent that there was no way in hell they'd help Hawke even if Hawke was pure evil. Like the Vashoth are just terrorists that don't care about anything and just want to find peace in battle..etc. Which seems ridiculous but I dont know the whole story

Can't we let the writers come up with one race or species we don't have the need to have our protagonist sleep with?

Ok, so I haven't seen any "Vorcha for LI" threads over on the Mass Effect boards.  But that doesn't mean I don't expect it.

Sten was awesome.  Qunari will continue to be awesome.

...why did I read this thread...

But seriously the whole "aliens will find humans sexually and romantically attractive" cliche is one of the most abused in all of science fiction and fantasy.
