So I am at Chapter 4 and a bit stuck right outside the Iron Mine because I can't defeat the 2 Mages, Archer, and Theif (or Soldier?) right by the entrance

My characters are all level 2-3 (or about to hit 3) and I am using Minsc, Dynaheir, Imeon, Jaheira, Khalid, and I am a Paladin

any suggestions on how to beat these guys? Panic keeps owning my party

Try gaining a few levels first.

Cast Remove Fear, then Web + Stinking Cloud + Fireball. Dire Charm is good too.

Hmm when does Jaheira learn remove fear?

She doesn't. It's a cleric only spell and Jaheira is a druid.

Have one player use necklace of missiles whilst Dynaheir uses wand of fire. You could also try charming some of them with Algernon's Cloak. Following up with Wand of Monster summonning could also help.

Maybe Dynaheir can cast a similar spell (level 2 for mages)?

Okay I was able to beat them, but now am stuck at the boss of the Iron Mines (the mage guy with the barrier around him)

Dispell magic is useful. You can actually beat him by charming him and setting off the traps that cause bad guys to appear. They will kill him for you!

Otherwise use a thief with stealth and boots of speed whilst the rest of the party stays out of the way. When he casts lightning bolt, make sure that the thief gets out of the way.

Otherwise use wand of monster summoning and let him use up his spells on them before attacking.

Thanks man that strategy worked like a charm! I was easily able to take out the summoned creatures and Imeon was able to take the difficult spells

Actually, in an unmodded game Jaheira gets a couple of cleric spells such as Remove Fear, Mental Domination and Harper's Call which is similar to Raise Dead (or Resurrection, one of the two at least). Remove Fear actually made a lot of sense since Khalid is a notorious runner and having Jaheira as his partner to cure his fear is great. Unfortunately, Fixpack changes that for no good reason.

Dumping Khalid & Jaheira for Kivan & Branwen/Viconia is a good idea, otherwise.

Truetrue, but then again, the canon party isn't even that good, there are plenty of better combinations. Shar-Teel, Kagain, Safana/Montaron, Viconia and Edwin/Xzar are a nice collection of evil psychopaths. They'd destroy the canon party in a heartbeat.

This "canon" party that is shoved in the player's face at the beginning of BG2, is the only thing I loathe with a passion.

I need a better theif before I can dump Imeon, and I need Dynaheir to keep Minsc, although I could go get Edwin

If you want to dump Imoen. Can't see why, she's good, why not take Coran? There's nothing that much wrong with Dynaheir either. For the spells she can't cast, use wands.

Okay where do I get Coran?

Cleric I can pick up the Drow you save by the Bandit camp to replace Jaheira

Pick Safana. She's feisty... and sultry.

Stat wise Imoen is the best thief in the game, in fact doesn't she have the highest stat spread? All the others are sort of average in terms of thief-ness, Montaron and Coran have better stats than Safana, but they're both multiclass. But I do like Safana, she's one of my favourite characters from BG1, her special ability can be rather useful too if combined with Doom. Skie is probably the second best thief in the game, her stats are close to Imoen's, give her the tome of constitution and she's just as good (albeit you have to endure her voiceset ...) AND she comes paired with Eldoth, who I like as well, but like Alora (another ... interesting thief) she comes into the game way too late.
Take Coran and Safana along together for some interesting banter ... are you playing Tutu? Or just normal BG1?
It's interesting how Imoen was an afterthought, wasn't her voice set for a guard named Pique? Hence her lack of dialogue with other NPCs.
Also, I'd say Branwen is a better cleric than Viconia, although it pains me to say it, she has 1 point higher wisdom and her stats are overall better suited for cleric.
Plus Edwin is the best mage in the game. You can have Minsc, Dynaheir and Edwin together. Although I think they come to blows eventually? Much like Shar-Teel with Eldoth, and Khalid and Jaheira with Montaron and Xzar

Okay I restructured my party (going to ditch Imeon for Skie), but using Viconia because of her default stats, and Ajantis easily replaces Khalid due to Paladiny goodness

Can somebody tell me how a paladin is better than a fighter in BG1? They can't get grandmastery and they need more XP for levels. They cannot cast spells and their Turn Undead ability isn't worth mentioning. There is no paladin specific equipment either.

And jaxsbudgie, why don't you like multiclasses? They are behind by one level at most in the original class (sometimes not even that) and they bring useful extra skills.

By the way, it's rather easy to have 1 member of a pair if you simply kill the other one. Image IPB

More constitution/HP, remove fear, and better save throws IIRC

That and anyone is better than Khalid who runs away almost instantly when he is at half health <_<

By the way I do like multiclass characters, it's just if you're looking for a Thief in Baldur's Gate 1 the best way is to get a pure one (in my opinion at least ...) and not a multiclassed one, unless of course the multiclassed one is a Fighter/Thief and spend all their attributes on stealth. But when it comes to Baldur's Gate 2, I think a multiclassed Thief is preferable over a pure Thief because their 'essential' Thief abilities (locks and traps) become a bit redundant by the time they're around level 7 as they're probably already both at 100.

Also, in terms of how many levels down they are ... I have to disagree, in my current game I'm playing a Skald (same level progression as Thief) and am currently level 21. Edwin is a Sorcerer and currently level 16. Nalia is a Swashbuckler/Mage and levels 15/13 respectively. That's 6 levels behind my Skald and 3 behind Edwin, and the gap is only getting bigger.
