More constitution/HP, remove fear, and better save throws IIRC

That and anyone is better than Khalid who runs away almost instantly when he is at half health <_<

Oh noes! A Paladin vs Fighter debate!

If you're looking for a good Fighter I'd suggest Kagain, he has a constitution of 20! He naturally regenerates ... but don't listen to me all the time, if it were my way, your entire team would be all evil.

Wait that is a good thing though ;)

I can understand the con bit, I guess I misunderstood when you mentioned the paladin vs fighter thing.

Also, in terms of how many levels down they are ... I have to disagree, in my current game I'm playing a Skald (same level progression as Thief) and am currently level 21. Edwin is a Sorcerer and currently level 16. Nalia is a Swashbuckler/Mage and levels 15/13 respectively. That's 6 levels behind my Skald and 3 behind Edwin, and the gap is only getting bigger.

This is a BG1 discussion.

Can somebody tell me how a paladin is better than a fighter in BG1? They can't get grandmastery and they need more XP for levels. They cannot cast spells and their Turn Undead ability isn't worth mentioning. There is no paladin specific equipment either.

Paladins roll d10 for hitpoints, just like fighters. Only barbarians roll d12. Only the paladin kit  'Cavalier' can cast 'remove fear', standard paladins can't. According to the manual, paladins get a +2 bonus to saving throws on character creation.  But the manual is infamous for it's inaccuracy. Even if they do, i doubt Bioware appled that to NPC's. Ajantis' saving throws are nothing special. Paladin kits are pretty awesome, even at low levels, especially the inquisitor. If you use SK to make Ajantis an inquisitor, mage fights are ridiculously easy (though slightly less so if you use SCS).
Having said this, Khalid isn't that great a tank. Best tank is probably Kagain with his high constitution and bonus saving throws.

In BG1 you cannot get 5 stars in any proficiency even as a fighter since you never get to level 9. You can only get that when you have installed tweaks like no limits on the amount of proficiency points at level 1 (which is normally 2) or removing the XP cap.
So in vanilla BG1, you can only get a few minor combat bonuses as a fighter (max 4 stars) compared to a paladin (max 2 stars), namely +1 thac0 (3 stars at level 3+), +1 damage (4 stars at level 6+) and +1 speed factor (4 stars at level 6+). I do not find it true that those bonuses do not match up to protection from evil (almost every foe is evil), lay on hands and lategame turn undead (paladin), nor racial enemy, stealth and an actual druid spell at level 8 (rangers).
The big bonus for fighters is the ability to be a multiclass or dualclass (though rangers do have that option as well).

or by using BGT or BG Tutu, which is pretty much standard nowadays.
As I said, the paladin Turn Undead ability isn't worth much in BG1, but I guess the special abilities (Prot:Evil & Lay on Hands) do amount to something.

That shouldnt be. If you split your exp in half you should only be rounghly one or two levels down.

So I am at Chapter 4 and a bit stuck right outside the Iron Mine because I can't defeat the 2 Mages, Archer, and Theif (or Soldier?) right by the entrance

My characters are all level 2-3 (or about to hit 3) and I am using Minsc, Dynaheir, Imeon, Jaheira, Khalid, and I am a Paladin

any suggestions on how to beat these guys? Panic keeps owning my party

Draw them out one by one. That helps for me... since i can then entangle the fighters and shoot the down, then the mages i dispell magic and web+entangle them. Then fireballs and other ranged attacks to kill them.
Last time i tried though i think one of my fighters got flame arrowed to death.

I would just like to confirm that Paladins (PC and NPC) do get their saving throws improved by 2 points in both unmodded BG1 and BGTutu. This by itself is already a considerable advantage over Fighters in my opinion.

edit: sorry for the thread necromancy, I just noticed this thread hadn't been posted in for a while.

Ajantis also has a 17 charisma, which makes him an effective party 1st for upping quest rewards.
