I don't understand why elves raised in human cities wouldn't have similiar accents to the humans. Is it a case of them deliberately affecting something different to distinguish themselves?

Not that it really matters. None of them are "actually" speaking English, I'd assume.

Though, as Maverick says, it's kind of odd that the dalish are the ones with the accent rather than the elves raised amongst a human culture... not that I have a problem with Welsh dalish as a general rule.

Probably the same reason why the rich and the poor have different accents. Education, travel, the people they interact with, their own self-esteem (judges small things like how loud their voice are and how fast they speak), etc...;)

Bah. Any Englishman who doesn't consider himself equally British isn't a true Englishman, I say. The anti-being called-British thing only works for the Scots and the Welsh. :P

But a British accent would mean we sound like the Welsh, Scottish or Irish all of which would be undesirable. I'll have my accent unsullied thank you vey much

This can sometimes affect the acting (as often happens when someone needs to focus on an accent they don't do naturally), and has limited value with North American audiences as many people seem to think accents sound "fake" even when they're completely authentic. Why, I don't know.
But there you have it in a nutshell.

Wait... So how you ensure accents are authentic? Because yes, they often sound fake in videogames, including DAO. Even people who's first language is not English feel that.

IMBD?

Isolde, Marjolaine and Erlina come to mind when I think of fake sounding accents in DAO. Though Louiza Patikas is more convincing than Kath Soucie

Only good Orlesian accents were Riodan and Leliana.

Lets say bioware decides to have one more land with a different accent. I would say they should have at least one Irish speaking dwarf. YEs, I would want to see a red hair irish speaking dwarf.

Now I want this. I want a red hair Irish speaking dwarf carrying a cleaver who has a small thing for dresses with different line designs.

Helps that both actors for Riodran and Leliana were French.  I can't say the same for Patikas and Soucie.

I dont want any Americans trying English and French accents. It's a good laugh, but to hear constantly.

This American used an English accent all throughout the shooting of the movie, and, when he finally reverted back into American, his coworkers thought his accent was hackneyed and terrible.

Also, that narrator is freaking creepy.

As long as there is no more Isolde, Marjolaine or Jowan. I'll be fine.

My point was it has to do with the quality of the actor, and it's also a perception thing. Corinne Kempa's accent is genuine, but all sorts of people mocked her for her phony accent. :D Also, bad accents are not limited to Americans.

I agree with you.  Though us American's are the worst offenders, we have a long standing history of poorly done accents. :(
