"[Development will be] along the same kind of time frame as 'Mass Effect 2'." Doesn't that mean it will be another 3 years?

Could change really, ME2 only took a long time because of the major change in the gameplay, that will not be the case with ME3. They are focusing on the wirting, where the gameplay will be the same with some minor tweaking.

I hope that means more banter and 6 game discs of content.

Edit: it seems they have the gameplay down pat (plus or minus a change to the inventory system and (possibly) armor system).

Personally I think the writing and art design/level design need to recieve near-top priority now, as I found Mass Effect 2's writing to be a little... holey (missing some key components from Mass Effect 1 that catapulted the series to "standout" status), and the art design/level design were a little more haphazard and unfocused, focused more on efficient gameplay and less on impressing the gamer (though the awesome ship exterior in LotSB was obviously an exception, lol; THAT was a high point of the DLC for sure).

EA said that it will be the end of 2012. don't hold breathe.

Link.

I remember reading a similar item. I think it was related to the release date of the movie, and the movie and ME3 coming out at the same time. Of course, I can't find the source now (google fu is weak today), so better to just wait for an announcement! :)

If they do link the release dates, I hope that the devs are allowed enough time to polish the game well, get rid of the bugs that have plagued recent releases, like Awakenings, and some DLC. But overall, I think that Bioware does an outstanding job on the writing and artwork fronts. DAO and ME2 are head and shoulders above the rest in those respects.

i will be so pissed if the ending is an ultimate sacrifise ending, like shepard has reaper tech in his body from cerberus and he has to sacrifise himself to save the galaxy. Godamn i'll be pissed.

But early 2012 sounds the most likely to me. They shouldn't take nearly as long making ME3 as the whole thing won't be overhauled and started from the ground up like ME2 was.

I'd put a late 2011 early 2012 estimate on this.

They have to come up with the entire script, scenarios, mapping, programming new content like weapons, abilities and character models. After that they need to record dialog for every spoken line in the game. Then assemble and playtest and revise every aspect until it's a complete ready to market product.

At this time I can only guess they've gotten work on the script, and possibly some level concepts. If we get anything next month expect it to be in the form of a teaser like what we got for ME2 "Current Status - Killed in Action"

And how exactly is this news? Bioware already stated they were aiming for a late 2011/ early 2012 release.

Pfft. Bioware's in their own league for both of those. :P

I just thought that ME1 had better sense of place than the ME2 locations; for example, the Citadel Zakera Ward hub really only vaguely resembled the Citadel we saw in ME1

I don't remember when the first teaser for ME2 came out, but maybe we can have one for ME3 next month.

The first ME2 teaser came somewhere early 2009, approx 18 months after ME (1) was released. So if they would even release a teaser of some kind this year, it would be relatively early.

Early 2009 ? So 1 year before ME2 release. If they aim a fall 2011 release, it's possible to have something in october.

The script is already finished. I'll find the link. They've been working on ME3 since before ME2 came out, and Casey Hudson said the game engine is exactly where they like it, which cuts down significantly on development time.

Hopefully this rumor is true, I'd love to get at least a tentative release date for ME3.

Ah, I just remembered something:
Bioware, if you are going to release a teaser trailer soon, PLEASE DON'T PUT SPOILERS IN IT like you did with ME2 trailers. I really hated seeing the Normandy being destroyed already expecting it to happen... I don't want to see a jaw-dropping moment from ME3 before playing the game.

So you don't want to know ahead of time that your entire ME2 crew dies in a horrible cuisinart accident?

If every single thing in the story - even something that takes place before you even get control of your character is going to be considered a spoiler then they might as well not make a trailer.

Normandy getting blown up is not a spoiler. It's introducing you to the premise of the new story. A spoiler in the trailer would be, I dunno, something we're not allowed to post in this forum - perhaps involving who and what the end boss is.

No release date speculation, please.

End of line.
