German Magazine PCGames review
#1
Posté 24 octobre 2009 - 12:19
The German print magazine PCGames rated DA:O with 91%.
For comparison: Fallout 3 had 90%, The Witcher enhanced edition had 87%, Mass Effect 85%.
No other RPG in the last years scored better.
More from the test:
pro:
- fantastically narrated plot with surprises
- first class combat sequences
- individual origins => high replayability
- a variety of quest (read: not always the same type of quest) with different ways of problem-solving
con:
- bad textures (environment/surroundings)
- level design a bit "staged" (sorry, difficult to translate)
- exaggeratedly bloody - NOT able to switch blood off (that's a surprise. Either the tester didn't find the switch or there is none - which would be against my hope and against my information)
The verdict in short (two testers):
"Long live Dragon age - I love it ... For me personally, DAO delivers that RPG experience I've been missing since Baldur'S Gate 2 ... great story, tactical fights, I'm looking forward to the adventures that can be made through the toolset."
"Ganz großes Kino" (difficult to translate for me ... something like "It's like a great move / a blockbuster" - not referring to sales, but to quality and depth.
"DAO is the rightful king of the RPG genre. It convinces or even shines in every area and has hardly any weakness."

Damn good score though, especially in comparison to the other games' scores.

Come to think of it, it might even be a better sign coming from PC Games, as Dragon Age has failed to draw big attention in Germany so far

"Ganz großes Kino"
A big cinematic experience, I can imagine.
Thanks so much for this, Taltherion. A real treat. Congratulations BioWare! The germans rated this higher than F3!<3

Blood effects can according to the test NOT be switched off - you can switch off the blood on your armor after fights, but not the fountains of blood when somebody is hit by a weapon (pity ...).
edit: looking at the pictures of the test ... if you - like me - have mainly seen youtube-video snippets and were a bit wary of the graphics ... brace yourself ....
If these are ingame-pictures, the graphics are on the same level with, no, they look even better than Oblivion or Lord of the Rings online ... breath-taking pictures there!
and SPOILER:
spoiler: Oghren has a certain interest in a certain female party member according to the test!

Thank you for taking the time to translate :3
Now the game has gone gold day has been going by a lot faster and in no time it will be our turn to make our own reviews.

They played about 50 hours before they were close to the end, but said they left out a significant amount of side-quests.
So I'd say about 70 hours of gametime if you do most quests is not that far-fetched.

And the Germans hate video games almost as much as the Aussies! So this is impressive.
What?
@PC Gamer Score: that´s really impressive, almost every reviewer loves the game. But It´s about time for some consumer love.

FFX was linear levels, linear game.
Oblivion was open level, open game
BG2 was mostly linear levels, open game.

Remember, about the levels: linear levels do not (necessarily) make a linear game.

After reading the review: It was less about being linear (which up to a point I have no problems with because in order to tell a good story, things have to progress at least more or less in a certain order). And you are right - there's a difference between a linear game and linear levels, too.
It was about the fact that NPCs had no daily routines (might be a pet peeve of this magazine, it comes up ever so often) and just sat or stood around without much life of their own.

I´ve also read the review (bought the stuff extra for it.. and it was not! worth the price). alas it´s nice that the score is that high and the reviewers love it, the article itself is kinda annoying. Are game testers nowadays forced to write silly, childish comments every two sentences?
Such as?

It´s the style of the whole test (but as i´ve read the magazine now, they have this throughout the whole thing).
Only one example - the obligate picture of morrigans romance, with underlined text "Wild:Hexenluder Morrigan lässt sich leicht flach legen. Lassen sie ihren Helden das mal mit dem Kampfhund versuchen".
Which means roughly translated "Witch-**** morrigan is easily nailed, let´s try this with the war dog". etc etc.
but as i said, it seems to be their kind of "style" in the end only the 91 % count..

There are two things that will never count as a con: sex and violence.
