I'm just wondering whether people find it more effective to use active powers to strip defences (like overload on shields, and warp on barriers), and then shoot targets during the cooldown - Or to strip defences with weapons and then use cc or direct damage powers (cryo or incinerate) as 'finishers' once an enemy is down to health?
Recently I've been playing my assault sentinel with just cryo/ throw and flashbang hotkeyed, and haven't been using defence stripping power unless my squadmates supplied them - and I've actually found it more fun, as cc powers tend to have much smaller cooldowns, so I can use them really often.

Guns are more effective at stripping defense in most cases. However, when you don't have time to aim, are moving, or enemies are bunched up, a strip can still be useful.

Agreed, Guns are better against defenses than health (all weapons have damage multipliers against defenses - none against health); I use guns primarily for defense stripping. But playing Sentinel I use powers to strip defenses while moving towards enemy positions and (hopefully) my squad and Shep have stripped most defenses when Sentinel is close enough to knock them down once they destroy Sentinel's shield (Tech Armor).

All depends on what ammo power you'll squad will be using.
If on a mission against organics with Squad Incendiary Ammo, on a mission against synthetics with Squad Disruptor Ammo, or on any mission with Squad Cryo Ammo, then use active powers to strip defenses as team's enhanced weaponry will destroy health.
If your on a mission with Squad Warp Ammo, Squad AP Ammo, Squad Disruptor versus organics, or no squad ammo power active, then use active powers to cc/finish enemies' health since the team's weaponry is optimized for defenses.
That's part of the beauty of the system; you can play it either way. Bring the ammo for the defense and the active powers for the kill or bring the ammo for the kill and the active powers for the defense. Hell, I switch between both playstyles at will per mission with most classes.
