I have read many posts saying the nightfall encounter is bugged in different ways and so on. For me the encounter won't end and the mobs won't stop spawning I find myself fighting 6-8 of them at a time with no down time and they don't stop spawning.

I have tried running up the hill to the knights while my party waits with them.
I have run back and forth to the knights with just 1 player left for over 30 mins kiting mobs and still nothing they just keep respawning.
I have brought my entire group down to the militia and tried sticking it out as long as possible.
I have put the the game on easy, it changes nothing the mobs don't seem any easier and they spawn at the same rate.
I have run all over the bottom half of them map grabbing glitched mobs and running them up top only to find that when I come back down 8 more mobs are waiting on me.

I didn't get the revered mothers blessing, I killed the dwarf ,I have berwick the elf and I have the barrels of oil.

I could use some help here. I would really rather not restart the zone.

Try healing the NPCs. Dont let the militia die and they'll add quite a bit of damage to the battle.

Heres what I did,

First it was absolutely necessary for me to train Morrigan with the Heal spell.

Next, During the first stage when your with the knights, select all your Chars to hold positions near the knghts.

Run up with your tank to near the castle gates and pull about 6-8 of em. Kill them and make sure you play as Morrigan to heal YOUR characters as well as your knight friends.

Rinse repeat. Its more of a timed event I believe

Then a guy will ask you to help the militia, do the same as before, MAKE SURE TO HEAL NPCs

This sounds like a good idea but as for the overwhelming amount of spawns is this normal? It seems like the game is on nightmare when I was only playing on normal.
Although I haven't DL'd the patch yet for fear it will break my game as many others have complained about.

start out with Knights.... kill kill kill... then you will be stopped and called down to help the villagers.

Then you kill kill kill some more. A lot of killing.

Then it stops after a lot of killing.

I doubt difficulty level changes the spawn rate just the strength of the individual enemies. So in answer, yes, it is working as intended. Make sure your stocked up on heal and mana potions and spend the time healing instead of doing damage. This is a battle of attrition.

Sure, they'll come pretty quick.  Bring Wynne and Morrigan.  Use Wynne to heal as many people as you can, not just your characters, but the NPCs as well.  Use Regeneration instead of Healing when you can, it heals more dmg over the long run, more mana-effecient.  Press "Tab" the whole battle (if youre using a PC), and watch everyones health.    Use Rejuvention on Morrigan as much as you can to keep her throwing spells.

Morrigan is used for crowd control.  Use Mind Blast as much as you can, stun as many of the bad guys as you can.  Continue to do so.  It will lower the incoming DPS a lot.

Other than that, focus all your characters on damaging the same guy, one at a time.  You should be fine.

I did this last night. The encounter wouldn't end for me but it was because there was one zombie just hanging out next to the water. Once I hunted him down and killed him, it ended.

As for your problem, the waves kept coming at me for quite a while. I started up on the hill, went down to help the mayor then went back up the hill (at this point, they were spawns of one at a time). Although there were a lot of mobs, it never really got challenging for me on hard. The Mobs didn't do all that much in the way of damage to my party. Maybe it was because I had the dwarf and his two buddies helping out though. I just made sure to keep my party close to the support and just overwhelmed the waves as they came in.

For me this battle seems like 20-30min. I know it is not that long, it just seems to be. Keep hacking and slashing, and keep the potins flowing and you will get through. Wynn has a revive spell that will resurect a party member that falls, cooldown on that spell is really long but it is an AoE so you may luck out on two fallen members.

Did I mention it seems like 20+ min for me?

This took me for ever to get past also. I saved before I started it, so I went back and messed with my party till i found the right balance to take them on. I think i redid that battle for about 2 hours before i got past it.

I will give this a try tonight. My main char is a rogue so playing the mage in my group will be a bit different. As for the amount of mobs and the amount time this fight takes I have a video which shows in a nut shell how many mobs + a few extra I am encountering and how long the fight is taking.

it is a four part video taking almost 30 mins to finish this encounter something tells me this was not intended.

I don't think this quest is bugged. There are just many, many waves of attacks. I let the militia die, and just kept luring out enemies, and getting them to follow me to the top of the hill where the knights are.

I just stay on top of hill until the NPC comes to tell me that the town needs help. Then I go down the hill and pull big groups all the way back up to the top of the hill and have the knights help me kill them. I go back down and grab another group. After a while I was not seeing new spawns in the town, but I was still in combat so I explored the town a bit and found 1 or 2 mobs stuck on objects. Once I killed them, the encounter ended.

Key for me is I think that the NPC coming to the top of the hill and telling you that they need help is a trigger. If you don't get it, you may need to stay up top longer.

The only problem I had was that a couple of zombies bugged behind a house and I had to hunt them down. I didn't heal any of the militia I just tried to protect them the best I could with my crew and of course by the end they all died. I didn't die or have to restart either.

I know many aren't into the level of micromanagement I am but I have yet to have a character die on normal and I have tactics disabled completely. I find my battles more lengthy than most but if I don't have to repeat them..... anyways, , good luck man.

It is bugged, sometime the undead get stuck somewhere and the quest wont end while they're still around.

Anyway, OP should just try and maximize his/her damage and crowd control.
Mind blast and cone of cold work wonders.

My advice is for portion 2 , fight on the upslope, I didn't heal the militia, but it took them much longer to get to me, and /or some new spawns might ignore me. I only had Morrigan with Heal, no other healing spells, didn't have Wynne yet, used Sten, my char (sword and shield war) and leliana with a bow. Worked out well on Hard, no difficulty.

The only buggy part I got was the first phase up top, where all the darkspawn died and nothing else happened. No new spawns, nobody telling me what to do next. I reloaded and that was fine.

Now on to phase 2, the only encounter I had to reload more than 4 times (playing on Hard and just got the game "done" last night). I think it took between 6 and 8 attempts. I did not have Wynne or any healing spells. I gave up trying to save the militia and instead ran past them all, to the left and across a bridge. This put me at a spot where some of the darkspawn were spawning, letting me kill them at my own pace. Most of the darkspawn remained at the militia until dead, then they just hovered around that campfire. I pulled them in groups of 1-3 towards my location (still on that bridge or just beyond it). I don't know how many darkspawn in total, likely between 20 and 30.

It's a very long fight. The enemies don't approach at the same time, try not to run to their position. You can however sometimes pull individual enemies with a ranged weapon in the first part of the battle on the hill. A mage in the party will help especially if he or she can freeze enemies. So will several things you can do in the village to make the fight easier. If the following words don't ring a bell, look harder: Smith, revered mother, oil, dwarf. It's still going to be a long fight regardless of what you do, but it shouldn't be impossible. If all else fails, let the enemies kill the militia and then pull them in small groups instead of engaging them at their chosen location.
