Vigil is the best piece of original music from this franchise.

However - for me, it defined the sense of exploration, space and general sci-fi leanings from the first game. To see it go from that to being a kind of stand in motif for the horribly undercooked and arguably unnecessary love plotlines is a mistake imho, and it grates a little.
I want to hear it and be reminded of the titlescreen from the first game, of getting ready to go on a big adventure, not Ashley throwing a hissy fit or Liara getting all emo on you.
Couldn't they have used another piece of music for those scenes?

Imagine this: You fight through a large alien ship with huge interiors. Slowly you advance, commanding your companions to take position left behind the crate and right behind another obstacle. You leave your cover to charge only to dive down again and give orders to your companions to do the same. The whole hall is full of gunfire and projectiles as you advance bit by bit. Your eyes repeatedly lock on your target at the end of this huge alien interior. Something happens at the end of your path, but you're not there yet. You have problems understanding your companions, the battle is too wild, furious and loud. Enemies drop left, right and in front of you.
Nearing the end of your path and while still under heavy fire the combat sounds and the combat nervous music fade. Instead the theme Vigil sets in, contrasting all this chaos from the still ongoing battle and signaling the conclusions of not only this last battle but also your journey. In this case the end is where it began: with Vigil.

As for music: Vigil is definitely the defining theme of Mass Effect, although it's also the theme of grand revelation or reunion. The theme of the entire series is definitely that defining horn sound, best expressed in Suicide Mission or the Normandy Reborn.
EDIT: Also I'd have to say one of my absolute favorite tracks is the score from The Long Walk section of the Suicide Mission.

It works both ways for me. The track is a promise of exploration and unexplored potential but it also works as a nostalgic piece, especially in the second game.

oh, its certainly nostalgic and a good calling card for the characters from part 1. if they'd just done it the once for the meet up in ME2, that'd probably have been fine. but wheeling it out for a second time seems a little odd when they had plenty of other good tracks from ME1. The original romance theme (well, its more of a heartbeat from what i can recall) would probably have sufficed, if nothing else.

I really really don't want Mass Effect to end with Shepard dying though.

Bolded for total agreement. Agree about vigil, but the Spectre Induction music is def. a fav for me. I miss the whole Spectre vibe.

Also, the intro of ME3 needs to be the Normandy warping into view and Shepard making his way up to Joker's seat to the tune of 'Spectre Induction', if only for awesome nostalgia.
