Post your favourite party lineups, could include NPC mods, NPCs editied with mods (Level 1 NPCs), maybe even the worst party lineup possible etc etc.
First group:
PC - Fighter>Thief
Viconia - Cleric
Anomen - Fighter>Cleric
Nalia - Thief>Mage
Now this team dominated almost everything, but then again, this was before I knew of any Tactics equivalent mods to make the game tougher, but in the vanilla game, these 4 were pretty tough. The only issue I have with small parties is the amount of magical items that suddenly become redundant. I pull a sad face each time I have to sell them.
Second group:
PC - Fighter/Thief
Viconia - Cleric/Mage
Jaheira - Ranger/Cleric
Edwin - Sorcerer
Nalia - Sorcerer
Sarevok - Fighter>Mage
I'd always wanted an arcane dominant group, towards the end it got way too easy when I had four NPCs casting Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting left right and centre. Sarevok was definitely an afterthought, he was there to fill the void Haer-Dalis/Solaufein left.
Third group:
PC - Bard(Skald)
Viconia - Cleric
Nalia - Swashbuckler/Mage
Edwin - Sorcerer
Jaheira - Totemic Druid
Korgan - Berserker
The group I'm playing at the moment, solid in almost every aspect. Nearly made Viconia a Cleric/Fighter and Jaheira a Ranger (both of which I can imagine being good), but too many multi-class character spoil the game for me (as I recently found out when I tried to fight Firkraag).
Party I want to play:
PC - Avenger or Monk
Viconia - Cleric/Thief (I've tried it time and time again, but never beyond chapter 2)
Valygar - Thief>Fighter (Or maybe just leave him as a Stalker)
Keldorn - Inquisitor (NPC number 1 of the NPCs I physically can't take stand)
Aerie - Cleric/Mage (NPC number 2 of the NPCs I physically can't take stand)
Korgan - Berserker (I want Viconia and Korgan to cause as much turmoil as possible, please)
Anyone else know of any other massive NPC bust-ups?

No love for Saerileth?
Any party with Viconia & Edwin makes the game pretty much easy mode, imo. Especially with a paladin PC that can swing around Carsomyr.
Replace those two with goodie-two-shoes like Imoen/Nalia & Aerie and the party becomes much less impressive. Edwin is a darn cheater with his stupid amulet.

Powergaming party:
PC: geomantic sorceror (mod)
Solaufein fighter/mage (mod)
Aerie: cleric/mage
Valen: fighter/thief (mod)
Edwin: conjurer
Jon Irenicus: mage (longer road mod)
Party with the most annoying npc's:
Anomen
Saerilith
Imoen
Jan Jansen
Valygar
They'd probably bore each other to death.
Party i'd have a lot of fun with without thinking of efficiency:
Edwin
Khorgan
Viconia
Xan (mod)

I'd replace Jan with Cernd for most annoying party...and maybe Kelsey for Imoen...bit of dead heat there.
Once did party of 6 sorcerers...interesting in tutu, but ridiculously powerful SoA onwards.
TBH, one Geomantic sorcerer is an overpowered party...add in the Stuff of the Magi for even more stupidity...Improved Demogorgon in three seconds, final Ascension battle in three rounds, without any buff at all.

Yep. Geomantic Sorcerors are ludicrously overpowered, especially once they get their HLA's. I couldn't believe it when i first saw those HLA's.
I can see your point with Cernd, though i find him boring rather than annoying. I always hated what Bioware did with Imoen in SoA. A lot of people hate Aerie, but as long as you don't romance her, she's actually ok.
I might actually add Mazzy to the 'fun' party. She's the only good-aligned character i really like.

Mazzy is indeed awesome, I just wish she had more interactions with other NPCs than Valygar. Having her and Korgan is comedy gold.

Korgan, Viconia and Edwin are the deadly three!

Of course that's a pretty strong party. I just meant to say i'd pick them because i like them as CHARACTERS. That they happen to be strong is just coincidence:)

With whom does Nalia have a lot of interactions? I'm thinking of taking her along the entire game next time... any fans of this character around these parts?

I like Nalia and in mine experience she has quite interesting interactions with Viconia, Jaheira, Mazzy (all mine permanent party members).

She has about one or two dialogues with Viconia, Minsc, Yoshimo and Jaheira, I don't know about Mazzy as I never take her. I know that when Edwina comes into the picture, she has a lot to say about the situation, and is actually quite funny.
Found this link on NPC banter counts. Don't know how accurate they are, but looks as if Nalia is seriously gimped in the banter area. Maybe try the Banterpack mod at Pocket Plane Group?
Edit: Just realised they get less and less because of the banters already mentioned above.

If my PC is a Swashie and I'm planning to play thru all of ToB, then I definately want Nalia for the whole run for a
Nalia interacts a little bit with practically everyone, particularly Keldorn and Edwin; the Nalia romance mod is worth going thru once if you ever wanted to hang Isaea Toenail by his own guts.
Obviously Edwin and Viconia are long term better choices than Nalia and Anomen, but I usually don't feel evil enough to keep the party Rep. in their comfort zone.

My last party consisted of all the evil guys, which was, as always, way to easy.
Bad Boys:
Sorcerer (PC)
Edwin
Korgan
Viconia
Jan
Sarevok (ToB)
My current attempt will be the exact opposite, both in allignment and difficulty.
Good Boys:
Monk (PC)
Keldorn
Anomen
Jan
Aerie
I'm still undecided if I'll pickup Imoen during Spellhold or give Mazzy a try (which I never used before in nine years of BG2!). Jan is non-negotiable in pretty much all my playthroughs, he's just too hilarious.

My favorite party is all good:
Minsc
Keldorn
Mazzy
PC (Sorcerer)
Yoshimo/Imoen
One thing I like to do is use Shadowkeeper to redistribute Minsc's skill points. Nothing illegal, just reassign them to longswords, flails, mace, warhammer, axe, etc. Then give Mazzy bastard swords and two-weapon fighting style. That party kicks some serious behind. I also like to get Sarevok - he doesn't leave although he threatens too. He really helps in ToB in areas like killing Yaga-Shura with lots of enemies. Anyways - that's a fun party.

Paladin (PC)
Aerie
Minsc
Anomen
Mazzy
Imoen
Out of all the party combinations I've done, the above is my favorite. What can I say, being a righteous force of do-gooders is fun.

My Do gooder caster party is : Kheldorn, Minsc, Jahere, Amoen, Nalia/Imoen.
Nalia and Jahere seem to preach a lot despite or because of "maintaining balance" or "helping the poor"
The Evil side obviously needs the big three ; but I have never been really succesful with an evil mage. In SOA I find I lack a sufficient number of meat shields. A fighter/cleric/thief easily gets by with Vicona, Edwin, and Korgan but less so a pure caster (I still cant get into Bards). Perhaps most likely my inexperience.

Might be. Bards are ok. Haer Dalis is a good tank (and an awesome dispeller!), but the need to buff him up every 5 minutes usually spoils the fun for me. If you have the patience for that, he's actually one of the best tanks around. You might want to try him one of these days.

Agreed thanks - my exact problem.
I have even tried fighter mage combos on the evil side to play more magic but end up frustrated.
Edwin Korgan Vicona are easy. Jan is the easy thief or Yoshimo. That leaves me and (lack of an evil tank). So when I play the evil caster and I dislike using Haer - I end up kinda no where.
Now if Sarevok was available early - that would solve my problem.
Disclaimer: unmodded game pure vanilla

My current group consists of:
- PC Blade
- PC Sharpshooter (via G3 Song & Silence. Instead of a backstab multiplier he gets the ability to atain grandmastery in any ranged weapon and gets charges of poisoned shots. Not OP at all, just a solid ranged hero with "pure" thieving skills)
- Korgan
- Viconia
- Edwin
