Advantage: If you are a human noble male and intend to marry Anora, she will like you better.
Disadvantage: Alistair will leave your party.

I think everyone should spare him at least once, because he's interesting, and to hear him out.

You get to hear more from him. He'll talk about Anora, why Maric didn't acknowledge Alistair as his son, he'll have comments in RtO (they vary based on if Wynne is in the party or not), and his reaction will be different than Alistair's if you ask him to do the dark ritual with Morrigan. If you are not playing as a human noble and choose to recruit dog in RtO, there's bonus dialogue with Loghain. Losing Alistair is the main disadvantage, but you can minimize that by marrying him off to Anora. However it has been mentioned off-handed by David Gaider that drunk Alistair may have a cameo in DA2 (I don't have a quote or any confirmation) so if you wanted to see that, at least you'll have a game ready to import over.

^ My current mage will spare him for those reasons, and also because I think they will have similar temperaments and actually get along pretty well. I'm definitely curious to talk to him, to have him interact with the remaining party members (I will also have lost Wynne as I intend for my mage to defile the Ashes), and to take him back to Ostagar. I'm pretty impatient to pick him up, actually. :)

What Gilsa said.

If you're also playing a male Cousland, you can marry Anora and then Loghain (if you do the dark ritual) will make an amusing appearance in Awakening.

If you spare him, his fate in Awakenings is a thing of beauty.

What's the use? If people believe there is no reason except an achievement or maybe some dialogue that justifies sparing him, that's a shame. But hardly a stance worth arguing about. Tis futile.

Will sparing Loghain convince Anora to marry you if your not a Cousland? I went through a human mage playthrough hoping that I could have a mage king. When I got to the point where I had to convince Anora to have me as king, she said I wouldn't be allowed because I was a mage :(

I thought being human in general could make you the king, but you had to be a Cousland.

You can't marry her unless your of nobility.

My Dalish elf spared him....meh. He's a git and I won't do it again.

Yeah sparing Loghain, and having him survive really ends up subjecting him to Karmic hell. Honestly it's probably the worst punishment ever for him.

Mister-Shepard - it is possible to marry Anora if you let an unhardened Alistair execute Loghain (if a hardenend Alistair kills him, he'll always declare himself king, which you definitely don't want). However, that sometimes leads to buggy epilogues. The safest bet is to spare Loghain.

The main thing is to talk to Anora at Eamon's estate beforehand and make sure you explore enough conversations to get "what if you had a strong king beside you?" then suggest yourself. If you don't do this, you won't get the option at Landsmeet.

Telling Anora that you would rather Loghain lived, or would not opposite it, will ensure you have her backing (if you tell her you intend to kill him, she'll always oppose you at Landsmeet, unsurprisingly).

As for having Loghain with you, do make sure you take him to camp at least once as it will kick off a different conversation than you can have just walking around. He has quite a dark sense of humour, as it turns out. I enjoy talking to him.

Obviously, if you pick antagonistic conversation options, he won't warm up to you and will be a "git" as the previous poster says. Be reasonable with him and he's interesting to have around.

He also likes map gifts which you can get from the alienage shop, the Wonders of Thedas and the Grey Warden cache. There's also one in Loghain's room in Redcliffe but you'll need to be a rogue to pick the chest it's in.

If you go with Morrigan's dark ritual, Loghain will show up in Awakening (after you've completed two of the main quests) and give you something. He also has an amusing chat for his son-in-law.

The other alternative is to let him slay the archdemon, which he is quite willing to do.

The First Warden orders him to join the Grey Wardens in Orlais. (A decision both unwise and unnecessary) But he jokes about it.

That cameo is just awsome.
I love how he is smiling like a goof when saying "The wardens of Orlais await my presence.. daggers and all".

But note this. Gameplay wise, Loghain is a worse companion than Alistair at that point, so take note of that.

I wasn't trashing him, or trying to start a "should you kill Loghain" discussion.

I didn't take the OP's question as asking for whether you SHOULD or should NOT kill him, but as asking what the advantages are, and what the disadvantages are.

And since you don't get an extra companion (Alistair leaves, so it's a swap), you don't get any material reward (no item, such as the mace from Golems, for example, no gold, etc) there's no material advantage.

As someone else points out, doing so doesn't change that you can only marry Anora as a HN - doesn't let a human mage do so, for instance.

And unless you respec him, as Giggles pointed out, with a mod - which, as a console player, I don't have - he's a weaker character than Alistair.

My response had nothing to do with whether Loghain is a good guy or a bad guy, or at least I wasn't using that for my answer.  It was solely a response to, what's the advantage in the game to doing so.

His a quite decent in-law thing I would never expect (human origin).

Good fun.

I've always been curious about the dialogue since you're swapping someone who was with you the whole time and followed your lead for someone who was your enemy for most of the game. But I've never been able to do it since I didn't want to lose Alistair. I know I could save before and then go back, but I just never wanted to do it.

That's a reason I simply cannot understand. But that's your choice. You're missing out on a lot of interesting dialogue and very moving endings.

I thought it would be hard to.

Then I heard him scream "MAKE ME KING" "KILL HIM!". His behaviour at the Landsmeet was really hard to listen to.
