Who knows? It could suffer from being rushed, but there are plenty of examples of games with short development times that were great (Baldur's Gate 2 being a notable one) and long development times that weren't.

Very true. The longer development time between ME and ME2 had a lot to do with fixing core things like, you know, the ENGINE. That takes lots and lots of time and effort. I'm assuming they won't do an engine and combat total overhaul in ME3 like they did for ME2, so it probably won't take two years again.
Though I'd rather have it done right. If they need three or four years, that's fine and dandy by me. A short dev cycle isn't necessarily a red flag, but it does make me worry a bit, part of the reason why despite being excited for DA2, I'm also a tad worried.

True on both counts. A complete, polished, and almost completely bug free game is what we are ALL hoping for the grand finale.

Done right, obviously (if they can do it fast too, great, but when we¿re talking about ME, quality AND quantity > time).

I'd rather wait and see it at the best it can be, rather than being rushed and disappointed.

I'll just be happy when it comes out, in the mean time I'm not going to stress over something I have no control over, there are too many great games to play out there as we speak, and they will help you all kill time until ME3 is released.
To expand on that, I really feel, and call me an idealist, but Mass Effect 1 set everything into motion, we all(for the most part enjoyed the game through and through for what it was, Mass Effect 2 expanded on ME1 and had alot of changes to its mechanics and structure, for the most part recieved well(yes there are alot of things in there that didnt go over well with everyone in the same respect), many devs from BioWare have shared their thoughts on the feedback they've gotten from us all, ie: ammo or lack thereof, how the ammo system is a good mechanic but the amount needs to be tweaked in favor of the feedback, scanning, exploration etc.
I trust Mass Effect 3 will be the best of the trilogy(I doubt there wont be any more Mass Effect games though), my reasons for thinking this are of course my own opinions and thoughts, but they've learned alot and grown alot as a developer, they're all professionals and I dont think they will squander their skills and knowledge and not deliver a top-notch( overall pleasing to all fans) experience with Mass Effect 3.

Done it right, i don't care if it takes five years to make this game, as long as it's done correctly.

@Joshep
Exactly my point. Besides, the latest DLC has proved that the story between ME2 and ME3 can be told VERY well. Although, with Bioware's talent I highly doubt it'll take 5 years to finish, but I get what you're trying to say.

As long as the technology is up-to-date. I don't want to see a game that looks and feels like it was made 10 years ago

I think the point we all attempting to get at here, is that the way bioware did ME1 and ME2, they have set up ME3 to be one of (insert fanboyism here) if not the (/fanboyism) greatest games of all time. Id really hope they do a great job. Theres so much potential and so many things set up to do an amazing job, we just want to make sure it happens. I, like many other people in this thread, wouldnt mind waiting a few more years, just to see it be as great as we all know it can be.
this discussion makes me sad that i only have one more mass effect game to go, btw :'(

Nobody can really say how far Bioware are into development of Mass Effect 3, they probably kicked off development of it at the beginning of the year (feb) or maybe even earlier, personally I'd like to see it out a.s.a.p! Though not to compromise the quality of it in the process..at the moment they are probably focusing on making the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 the best one yet....as long as its out sometime in 2011 that'd be great..

Done fast AND right
I'd rather the make it right than fast, there's no need to make the last game in the series a flop becase it's been sloppily done...
as a sidenote: Anyone who acually wants it done fast instead of right is a bloody idiot, I understand this is supposed to be a "rock and hard place" question but for that to be true the hard place can't be a fluffy pillow...

Done right. I hate hearing about the things that were cut from ME1 and ME2 (remember Therum was supposed to be a hub world, with dingy mining bars and a shady casino? Then there's the upgradeable Mako, which never really saw the light of day).
I'm hoping that they spend the time they have to fine-tune the dialog, art quality (by bringing the atmosphere more in step with ME1's), and of course, implement an inventory system that works and feels right (and saying that "it breaks immersion" doesn't work, especially when you can take scantily-clad women with you on a mission into unholy hostile territory).

For the most part i don't think that ME2 needs graphical improvement..... well apart from the hair XD, the combat system was pretty dang solid and the story for ME3 will already be pretty much finished by now, so i mean theres already the frame there for great, all they really need to do is expand on the combat and rpg elements a bit more to kinda make it a nice mid point between ME1 and ME2 and do a few more things to make it incredible, i reacons they can do it in a short amount of time in games standards and yet make it the best game to come out in years!!
saying that i'd much rather they'd get it amazing and it take a long time than do a halo and bring out a mediocre game quickly after the last one.

Yeah, but KOTOR2 was not done by bioware. It was done by Obsidian ent.

Mass Effect 3 must be done right but i dont want them to do like Blizzard who takes forever to release their games (Bioware wont do that though).

Done right but within reason of course. 12 years to make a game is ridicules (plus if you spend to long making a game the tech gets outdated anyways)

The game needs to be done right - this finale is supposed to blow our minds away. If it doesn't meet expectations, there will be RAEG and I know that I'll be on of them. Give them all the time they need, but the date shouldn't extend much longer than Summer '12.

Lol...
a) if you browse the forum you will see that fans "expectations" are something that can't be taken as a goal for any company. They are ridiculous for the most part.
I'm pretty sure BioWare doesn't want a rage, but the only thing that really scares them is that the money they invested in the project will be lost due to bad sales. Which brings us to point
c) The longer the project takes, the more expensive it will get (unless you work with half the staff... which wouldn't make sense). So, if they polish the hell out of it or add content after content they must either charge a horrible amount of bugs per box (which they can't) or have to sell CoD-MW 1/2 kind of units (which they can't either). Despite all our wishes and hopes, they only have a certain budget to stay profitable and that is what they gonna spend. Either with many people on a short time or fewer people on a longer time. But thats not something they can stretch and stay healthy.
So either way, let those guys do their job and let's hope they spend the money on the right stuff!

There is no contest: it needs to be done right, but the time it takes should be within reason.
Whoever in their right would want Mass Effect 3 to be rushed is beyond me.

A large expansion with all the squad you can get, TIM and major ME1 characters would be great to tell the story between ME2 and 3 while giving the devs enough time to make it great as we play and re-play the expansion with choices from ME1 and 2 affecting it.... = my dream
