So, I just got to the part where I'm supposed to go up the tower and light the beacon, but just inside the tower, the darkspawn have set up an ambush that I cannot seem to get past. First off they set up barricades I have to navigate, and they have a caster waiting for me to go through the choke point who appears to fireball my characters whenever more than one is in the chokepoint. If I go through the chokepoint one at a time, the single character dies. The fireball generally kills the tower mage outright, and if I *do* manage to get through there without most of my characters at nearly dead, The darkspawn seem to "focus fire" on my characters, and take any one of them from 3/4s health to dead in 2 rounds. I've reloaded this fight about 30 times, and I can't find any way to get through this fight without having my butt handed to me. Is there some trick I'm missing? I'm only level 5, and dont have a ton of tactical options yet.

Hold you party inside the doorway and pull enemies one at a time with a ranged weapon.

Use tactics to your advantage. Don't just run in and start hacking. Take them on a few at a time, and take out that Emissary as quickly as possible.
First time I encountered them I had to reload - my Circle Mage was defeated and this caused a bug to rear its ugly head where I was stuck in Combat mode with no enemies nearby. Second attempt I managed to pull them apart from each other. The Emissary will cast his fireball, but he doesn't have unlimited Mana so he will usually only cast it once right away, then again a little later if you don't focus on him.

That's a fairly tough spot, true.
Making the Darkspawn come to you by retreating to the doorway is the safest bet. The pillars in the main room will also protect you from arrows, so try fighting in their cover if the archers are still around.
It's possible to charge through the trap and win, since that's what most video walkthroughs of the area seem to do, but it's not the best idea. If you spring the trap deliberately, you'll want to do it with just your beefiest character and then heal immediately afterwards.

Hmm. I suspect the problem is I've got no bows- haven't seen any drop, and I didn't buy anything off the camp merchant other than extra healing potions. I'll reload back to a point where the quartermaster is available and buy myself some bows.

I think I know what my problem is. I've got no ranged weapons- haven't seen any drop. The darkspawn haven't shown any interest in budging, maybe with some ranged attacks they will. I'll see about reloading to a point where the quartermaster is available and buy some bows from him.

you should have two other soldiers with you along with allister. one of those guys is using a bow, so go into his tactics menu and set him up with ranged attack. also i learned early on when you are a mage you do not want all the bad guys to target you as you will not last very long. let allister do the tanking and you can hit with heal on him, if you are a mage and you do not have heal then shame on you.
if it gets to hard then turn it down to easy and try it again.

it only seems hard. I find in this game if you take a few seconds to think about a battle before going in, what seems impossibly hard is actually fairly easy. This is one example.
I just got past another example just now. 3 drakes. I thought no way could I take on 3 at once, but I figured out a way to do it. Just think a little.
hint: don't rush in, draw them out to you.

Yeah that's all good advice, use range to pull enemies one at the time, also use the pillars for cover once they spot you, if they are aware of your presence and you move out of their visual range they will come to you and now it's your time to ambush.

I held the mage back and had my main fighter, Alistair, and the dog rush into the main areas where the mages were. They got burned by the initial fireball, but then closed the distance and started killing off the darkspawn, while the circle mage casted his spells from further away.

I find it greatly satisfying when a little thinking turns an impossible encounter into an easy win.
