some of my favorite party's:
PC - Blade
Ajantis - Paladin
Finch - NPC-mod Cleric, very likeable personality!
Kivan - Archer
Imoen - Thief (not dualed)
Xan - Enchanter
- because of Xan's kit, my Blade is the one throwing magic missiles, chromatic orbs and fireballs at the enemy, I like my PC to be throwing fire at the foe, even though he's a bard and it's often thought they should use their spells for buffing - but with high DEX (19 with tome) proper equipment and using spins at critical moments, he doesn't need much buffing.
very powerful 4 man party I have:
PC - Fighter-Mage
Ajantis (again) - Paladin
Gavin - NPC-mod Cleric (bit boring - too goody goody)
Imoen - Thief6>Mage
My F-M is chaotic neutral, but after some moral lessons and reprimands from Ajantis he was persuaded into being almost as chaotic/neutral good as most of my characters
With my Bard having finished the game, I got a campaign going with a half-elf Conjurer that has the same characters with her: Ajantis, Finch, Kivan, Imoen and Xan - they're my most favorite characters. Especially Finch

Protagonist (anything, I was druid)
Ajantis (paladin, melee)
Safana (thief dualed to mage at level 4 or 5 using the tome of intelligence, traps and locks)
Imoen exchanged for Coran later on (ranged and stealth)
Branwen (cleric, melee)
Garrick (bard, pickpocket)
Protagonist (anything, I was transmuter dualed to thief at level 4 (invisibility and stealth)
Shar-Teel (fighter dualed to thief at level 6, traps, stealth)
Minsc (ranger, melee)
Dynaheir (invoker dualed to cleric at level 5 using tomes of wisdom)
Imoen (thief, locks, traps) exchanged for Alora late game (locks, pockets)
Quayle (cleric, mage)

I think with that playthrough I started with the intention of whenever a character dies, I would remove them and replace them. That soon got boring once Imoen, Montaron, Branwen, Jaheira and Khalid died. But by the time I'd collected everyone in the list above, they were beyond solid as a team. Plus I've never been a fan of pint sized people unless it's Korgan or Kagain.

jaxsbudgie, can you tell me how to
give an NPC a kit from a mod, like you did with Safana and the Gypsy
kit? I'm used to employing EasyTutu NPC-kits, but it only gives you
vanilla BG2-options.
Install the kit mods early on (Song & Silence, Sword & Fist, Divine Reix etc etc), then install Level 1 NPCs last. Safana as a Gypsy was meant to be, her bard song charms people into fighting alongside her, hilarious.

I've always wanted to try a party with just dualed humans. I've already dualed Safana to mage with the tome of intelligence and Shar Teel to thief in the past. I know Xzar and Dynaheir can become clerics with tomes of wisdom, and Branwen with a tome of dexterity. Maybe in my next run through.

Really good party you can do anything with it and it still provides enough of a challange.
I had real fun with mine

I have been temped to do that as well. The problem is that although you can dual both Xzar and Dynaheir, you will have to jump into Durlag's Tower on time to get the last tome of wisdom or otherwise you will not be in time to regain the mage levels.jaxsbudgie wrote...

Fighter&Imoen(rogue)
Khalid&Jaheira
Minsc&Dynaheir
I could make a party 10 times as powerful as above, but its not as fun to play or roleplay.

Sounds like a fun idea. I plan on playing a Gypsy PC, but I haven't made up my mind yet to make it a BG1 or BG2 campaign. But Safana as a Gypsy? Sounds like a charming ideajaxsbudgie wrote...

Another idea I'll put into a campaign one day is myself (a portrait of me with a helmet made into a 170x110 bmp image) with this 'canonical' party, but I will be a Cleric: Painbearer of Ilmater kit.ncknck wrote...

Sorry, I missed this question. Basically I rushed through the early chapters with a 6 man party so you gain only few levels. Then once I got to access to the city I went to collect the tome to use on Safana and immediately dual her. She was rather far into level 4 or 5 at that point so some experience points were lost, but that is okay.Son of Imoen wrote...
How did you manage to dual Safana so early? Don't you need to be in chapter 5 before you have access to the tomb of intelligence?
I think you can also hire an NPC at an early level, ditch them and later on rehire them at the same lower level at which you ditched them.

Or I might use the BWP installl I recently made - the recommended version, with Spell Revisions, without Divine Remix, so no Painbearer of Ilmater - and try out the 'Priest of Mystra' kit. The recommended BWP install comes with a whole lot of new kits that are put there by The Darkest Day. And that Priest of Mystra looks cool: a cleric that gets to cast the evocation wizard spells as well. Might be overpowered, but more fun than a plain Cleric.Son of Imoen wrote...

Any thoughts on what's your favourite PC class if you take the canonical party (Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, Dynaheir)? To me being a cleric seems the most logical - though it hurts my atheist conscience to worship a God - because of the disabling spells like Silence and Hold Person that Jaheira can't cast. Any other classes that people put in with those 5?

There were several partys I really liked. Couldn't say there is a favorite, but one 4-people constellation has a huge nostalgic bonus for me, because it was basically the combination of all the characters left on the map in my first successful no-reload attempt (everybody else suffered from permanent death):
PC (Druid)
Yeslick
Coran
Skie
Four really good characters, what a bizarre team though, looks like it may be suprisingly efficient. Out of interest, what did you think of Skie?
I seem to pick her up more than often nowadays, and I don't even know why.

I recently did a BWP install a few weeks ago just to test it out, first thing I didn't like were the components it didn't install that are normally staple components for me. Also The Darkest Day sort of ruined it for me. The kits reaked of 'mod content' if you know what I mean. The Cleric kits were a bit overpowered, I too was taken in by them. They're not as well structered as the Cleric kits in Divine Remix, shame Spell Revisions isn't compatible with it.Son of Imoen wrote...

I'd recommend a manual install too, it's fairly simple so long as you follow the PDF.

I won't try a hand-made install of the mega-mods, as it is so much work and so easy to fool things up. This spring I wasted three days installing BGT three times over and three times something went wrong. Even if you do it by the book (by the PDF), it takes so much time. Setting all the tweaks in BGT costed me most of a day with all the mods I choose, even without the mega-mods I got into the BWP automated install now. I hope that some day a more tweakable version of the BWP-installer is made. In the selection screen, there's a box saying something like 'in the future you will be able to select components here'. I'm looking forward to that future.

Khalid - Fighter
Branwen - Cleric
Imoen - level 5 thief dualed to a mage
PC - Fighter/Mage (Multiclass)
I had the PC have ** in bow so he used a composite bow and rained down arrows on the weaker enemies and spells and wands on the tougher ones. Imoen did the same thing but of course with her shortbow. Having 3/4 of the party able to use wands was also pretty handy.

Jahiera
Ajantis
Coran
Dynahir
Leave this one to change between various characters to do their quests.
With that set up there is enough banter and romance to keep anyone happy with my set up.
I like the romance between my character and Dynahir.
If playing a female elven character, I would have Xan instead of Dynahir. Interesting romance there too.
