In All the Baldur's gates and icewind dales... i like mage heavy parties. Mainly because of the summons and energy they can use... also in BG2 they are my only weapon against enemy wizards.
They seem to be redundant in TOB final battle since melissan's magic resistance and time stop resistance doesn't help... unless your mage has wish, in which case resting may be possible... which i should have gotten last time.
Ranger/Clerics in BG are extra handy since they automatically have access to all druid spells of the equivelent cleric spell level... Insect plague and ironskin FTW.

I had an unusual party combination. There were no mages in it beacuse Edwin had an evil alignment and Xan and Dynaheir didn't really appeal to me. It worked pretty well though. I had
Paladin (protagonist)
Ajantis
Khalid
Yeslick
Coran
Kivan
The cool thing was that each party member could each easily hold their own in combat. They were all either paladins, or fighters. But two were also multi-class. I had Yeslick as my primary healer/cleric, and Coran as my thief.

My classic party combination:

Ranger
Khalid - Fighter
Jaheira - Druid/Fighter
Branwen - Cleric
Imoen - Thief
Xan - Enchanter

My current party combination:

Fighter
Yeslick - Fighter/Cleric
Branwen - Cleric
Kivan - Ranger (Archer)
Coran - Fighter/Theif (Archer)
Imoen - Thief/Mage

I'm having fun with my current line up.   My Fighter takes up the role of tank as Kivan and Coran rain down arrows like a sheet of hail, thinning out the enemy ranks very quickly.   Yeslick provides immediate melee support.   As shall Branwen where necessary.   Branwen is more so healer while Yeslick carries spells to buff the party.   Imoen can turn the tide of battle with a spell or two or simply provide further damage from range, be it a spell or her bow.

I'm toying with the idea of letting Branwen go but, she departs forever if dismissed from the group.   I wouldn't mind having an open spot to cycle with various choices for quests and variety.

Imoen - sorceror heh
Montaron - vanilla style fighter thief
Viconia - vanilla style cleric

Typically for me:
Minsc
Dynaheir
Imoen (dualed to Mage)
Branwen

Then either Kivan or Ajantis, depending on whether CHARNAME has a decent charisma or not.

ze Bhaalspawn is typically a Thief->Zerker dual class.

How do you reason that, role-playwise? A berserker deciding to sit down studying books for a change? Or are you just power-gaming? Don't take offence, I'm just curious, it's no criticism, each is entitled to his own style of game.

It's okay.   I just resolved my own (over-thinking as always) dilemma!

It's just powergaming but ... high intelligence/low wisdom and chaotic neutral alignment, he's extremely emotional but he'll begin to see the value of magic eventually if it were to be roleplayed. The beserker kit mentions something about a warrior making a conscious choice to fight in that style, doesn't mean they weren't educated or biased against magic. The typical berserkers are dwarven battleragers tho ;D

Starting as a berserker might represent the chaos inherent in being a bhaalspawn.

Is it ironic I gave the bastard a Vin Diesel portrait? ...

More Mages are required!

I seem to remember playing something like:
Myself, as a Mage or Fighter dualed to Mage (or possibly a Cleric/Mage or Cleric->Mage).
Imoen, Thief dualed to Mage.
Minsc, Ranger (or SCKed to Fighter, say).
Dynaheir, a Mage.
Xan, a Mage.
Yeslick, a Fighter/Cleric or Branwen, a Cleric

The Khalid as a Fighter/Mage mod is pretty good, too. Then you can take Khalid and Jaheira and have plenty of mage. With Imoen as a Thief and perhaps another Cleric (or play a Cleric/Mage) you can just fill the other slots with more Mages!

I'm tempted to try and create a full mage party and No-Reload them through the game. Could be fun.

I would be a mage by
choice (I'm more academic than anything) but used to have a terrible temper. I think I'd be a beserker->mage in real life. Why not?

A bit of an unrelated question here, if you'll forgive me -- If I adventure with a smaller party, will I get more xp per character/finish at a higher level, or does the game auto-adjust for the number of characters in my party . . ?

You will indeed get more xp with a smaller party. You won't get quite 6 times as much for a solo as for a full party because some random spawns are dependent on the level of the party, but all the set encounters and quest rewards are the same irrespective of party size. Unless you've removed the xp cap you won't get to a higher final level, but you can certainly reach that cap quite early in the game if you solo.

If you don't have the Tale of the Sword Coast expansion, your experience stops at 89,000. If you do have TotSC, then it is capped at 161,000. There are mods that can be installed that remove the cap, which allow a higher level than you could normally.

It's a pity the old forum went down. On the 'six men all one class'-challenge (can be women too) someone did an all-mage party and made it to the end. Reading how Sarevok was darted and magic missiled to death was especially fun.

I want to say Sarc (not 100% on name but I think that's who it was) or maybe saros-follower, but in any case they did a berserker plus 5 mages, and Sarc himself was a wild mage. That was an interesting run to follow, like you say SoI it is too bad the old forums went down. Sometimes I can find pieces of it in Google's cache but otherwise it's a ghost.

Hmm. Bioware may have lost it but here we go. Based on the temple outside I will indeed have obliterated Sarevok with magic missiles.

Party was Nelcor (think he was charname), Sharun, Wincerind, Hamionee, Sorearm Thewite and can't remember no 6 (would have been male).

Edit; perhaps a variation of Simon (as in the sorceror)?

I'm currently at >300K XP with everybody, but then I'm also running BGT and a number of other mods, so that's no big wonder.

If you import a capped character into BG2 then the extra experience carries over… so a ranger that earned 300,000 in BG1 should start the second game as level 9.

I think a 6-man mage party might actually be harder than a smaller party (though maybe not than a solo, at least at the start) because getting six mages to L2 would require 15k XP.Hmm.

I love these questions.

I always go with this same group but I I Level 1 NPC'd them this time to:
1. PC (Paladin/Cavalier)
2. Imoen (playing as a Swashbuckler/Mage)
3. Jaheira (Playing as a Druid - she loses Harper's Call this way)
4. Khalid (playing as a Bounty Hunter)
5. Minsc (playing as a Barbarian)
6. Dynahier

I REALLY want to play this party next time:
1. PC (Fighter)
2. Ajantis
3. Yeslik (play as a Fighter)
4. Kivan (play as an Archer)
5. Branwen (play as a Priestess of Helm or, better, Lathander)
6. Coran (play as a Swashbuckler)

I wouldn't be able to bring myself to make Branwen a Cleric of any other god that isn't Tempus. Although I like the idea of Coran as a Swashbuckler.

Briefly went though a few play throughs, each getting to Baldur's Gate then losing interest.

Group 1: The Midgets

PC - Illusionist - Gnome
Quayle - Ilusionist/Cleric
Kagain - Beserker
Yeslck - Fighter/Cleric
Montaron - Fighter/Assassin
Alora - Burgler (Song & Silence)

Was fun and a bit of a challenge since I despise small people, especially since my female PC had the avatar of a bald and bearded male!

Group 2: The Elves

PC - Diviner
Viconia - Cleric
Kivan - Ranger
Coran - Sharpshooter (Song & Silence)
Jaheira - Totemic Druid
Xan - Fighter/Enchanter

Was interesting watching Jaheira run into battle with a spear and Xan with his moonblade, reckon Xan would have been better if it weren't for his abysmal hitpoints.

Group 3: The Humans (still playing this one)

PC - Blade
Imoen - Sharpshooter
Branwen - Fighter>Cleric (dual classed her, had to be cheeky and move her stats around in SK, but moved them back after dualling)
Shar-Teel - Beserker
Edwin - Sorcerer
Xzar - Cleric/Necromancer (possibly my favourite altered NPC class combo)

So far so good, Branwen dualled at level 3 so she got 5 stars in Warhammer and has just gained her Fighter levels back. Her and Shar-Teel are pretty much dominating the battlefield now with Imoen picking off the remainders. The men hardly get a look in and die most of the time, heh.
I think I've just about used and abused every single party combo, urgh.
