I know it's possible to save both. I don't know what choices I need to make to have this happen.

I would assume to always upgrade the keep & the gear the soliders have.

- Main question is what do I protect Trade, The City, Farm Land or All. I'm guessing it's between The City or Trade. Since Farmland can be rebuilt fast. All would spread your forces to thin.

Just make sure you have all the upgrades for the Vigil. It doesn't matter which you protect really. Only effects some minor dialogue, and an epilogue slide. Protecting Trade has the most benefit though because it gives you access to new gear.

Well, you really can't save both but the best outcome is if you fully upgrade the Keep (get all the ores and the granite), do all the companion loyalty quests (yeah, a bit like ME2, huh?) and then protect Amaranthine.

The keep will fall and lots will die, but it will be rebuilt within 5 years.

If you opt to protect the keep and burn Amaranthine, the epilogue slides are rather negative.

However! Saving the keep means all your companions will survive, and when you return there it's quite touching that they are so happy you didn't abandon them.

If you save Amaranthine, those you leave behind may die or disappear. The ones you can leave safely (provided the keep is fully upgraded) are Oghren, Nathaniel and Anders. However, since Nate and Anders are my favourites, I always take them with me.

Regardless of doing Oghren's quest, or even a very high approval as long as it's positive, he survives regardless. He seemed to be a favorite of the devs, so there was much handwavium involved in keeping him alive. ;)

But Nate, Anders and Justice were my favorite companions in Awakenings so they were the ones I always kept with me.

I just wish that you could keep Varel alive if you did save the Keep, he was one of my favorite non-companion NPCs.

Hehe. Not just that, but I just loved his refreshingly blunt manner. Like ending the meet and greet with the nobles.

"Okay, everyone clear out now, the commander is a busy woman."

I burned Amaranthine to the ground and then reloaded when I found out how much hatred people had for her. It wouldn't be good for her being the queen and all.

I wonder whether Varel was among those who survived if you choose to save Amaranthine and upgraded the Keep...

I'm pretty sure he dies either way.

If you save Amaranthine and upgraded Vigil's Keep you get a letter from him, that you can read, in Golems of Amgarrak.

i just burn the city to the ground
i look at the bigger picture if the keep falls then you will have 100 more citys like that one burning and nothing to stand in its wake

GOA essentially confirms that, based on the letter you get.

Yeah but your forces can hold the keep on their own if you save the city and fully upgraded the keep, they just take a lot of losses. Civilian deaths are worse than soldier deaths

A life is a life Mustang, regardless of whether it's a soldiers or a civilians. Fact of the matter is, Amaranthine is probably down with the Blight sickness, especially as the pestilence brought by the Children apparently wiped out 1/3rd of the population in the first day.

Most responsibile and pragmatic response is to burn Amaranthine and save the Keep to prevent another Ostagar.

The letter is from Captain Garavel, who was promoted to Seneschal after Varel's death.

Varel can live, and you get a letter from him if he lived, not Garavel.

I saved the City and upgraded the Keep multiple times and always got the letter from Garavel. Guess that's just like the people that state Varel can lead the Silver Order despite there being no proof of that. Sad but true. Varel was too awesome. R.I.P. Varel
