What I did not expect was my sudden attachment to the female incarnation of Commander Shepard—fondly referred to as FemShep around the web—during the first game and my continued connection in the second.
^Sums it all up very well. Exactly how I felt when I started a FemShep. Lovin' her more every time I play.

I've never been able to bring myself to play a FemShep, are there any differences in normal dialogue?
Well not to start a flame war but in the first game Hale VA is much better, and a touch better then Meer in ME2, though this is due to meer getting much better and Hale only improving a little bit. But yes there are a few lines, which I wont say, that she does have that are unique to her.

Yet didn't Bioware's statistics show FemShep is significantly less popular than this article would lead us to believe?
I think those stats are skewed. I have a MaleShep. Great, that means I'm part of that 80%. But what about the two FemSheps I created?

It's all in the delivery of the lines.
And no, I don't find her annoying at all. Jennifer Hale's voicework is excellent.

From the video clips I've seen I just can't stand her voice for some unknown reason. Anybody else feel the same?
Blasphemy!
Jennifer Hale has an amazing voice. Pleasant, strong and sexy. In fact Hale is pretty much the sole reason why FemShep is the only Shepard I can play.

as for popularity, i couldnt imagine the resident evils with a male movie-char either as it draws much of the suspension from a relatively fragile sexy looking char being able to kick severly ass.
there are plenty other movies where that wouldnt be a viable option as well, so it just depends. For ME both works out perfectly, i just get more suspension out of it playing a relatively fragile char in "kickass" mode or so to speak

i think they can account for that obviously it's based on total numbers, so 8/10 shepards are male.

I would disagree. They said 80% played as a male shep. They never said 80% of all playthroughs were male. Plus you take a survey done by AngryFrozenWarrior, and it comes out that about 75% played as a maleshep one time or another out of about 1000 votes. It extrapolates and works out to be well, conclusive.
I dont want to sound like a dick but read the wording of that statement very carefully. It said 80% played as a male shep. Not exclusive, not average, nothing like that.

No, it stated 80% of players used a MaleShep. Not 80% of the characters were MaleShep.

I think the Mass Effect statistic we're all talking about here is a little misunderstood. As I recall, the stat is that 80 percent of players have played MaleShep. It does not say how many have played both.
Considering this, that means 20 percent of players are FemShep players — exclusively.
I'd bet that many of the 80 percent who've played MaleShep play MaleShep only, but I don't know how many. I'd bet there are more "exclusively" MaleShep players that FemShep players, but I don't know.
However, we do know that 20 percent of FemShep players are FemShep only.
So what does that mean? I don't know — other than FemShep has a large and loyal following.

Plain and simple that is just opinion. I feel that it is the opposite (excluding Jacob/Femshep dialog...ewww)

I first played a male Shepard but in my dubbed European version of the game, his voice actor did sound so laughabe that I switched to a FemShep and finished the game with it.
Plus, a FemShep-Liara relationship must be the most compelling video game love story ever.

^ This. Hale's VA really drew me into the story and game and she just made it feel much more believable.

Apologies, yes I should have stated it is an opinion. But feel opposite in which way?

But this whole issue of only 20% of players used Femshep (we must be one loud-ass minority) may not mean the vast majority does not like playing a female protagonist (counter-point: Tomb Raider), but that Bioware needs to show Femshep in marketing (stepping stone: showing a pic of Lady Hawke). If half of players did not finish the game, I bet many did not know female was an option due to marketing.

you can try picking semantics in choices of words/phrases all you want, if it makes you feel better - the facts and statistics are clear. a forum poll is never going to be representative or unbiased as the general market by very definition.

FemShep is a kind of heroine like featured nowhere else. There you'd have the archetype female characters of the video games like TombRaider and whatnot and come on, they're ridiculous.

Agreed to everything above.
And I finished my FemShep playthrough of LotSB last night. Quite satisfied with how BioWare handled FemShep/Liara's rekindled relationship.
