Title says it all, I've noticed this on some textures, I think it relates to particles. For example when you or someone in your party uses snowblind rounds (I think that's what they're called) on an enemy, he falls to the ground all covered up in frost and the icing cracks and pops away.

I supppose at this point you're supposed to see particles, while all I seem to get is a funny dance of semi-transparent rectangles going everywhere. It looks like as if the relevant particle texture is entirely missing.

I can't seem to relate this to any setting in the .ini file nor to driver, system settings or in-game graphic options, as everything is up-to date and working fine and I've pretty muched tried them all to no avail. The problem persists, and it happened both on XP a s well as on a fresh Win7x64 installation, all other games are working fine.

I've installed MassEffect from the EA Value Games version of the disk. I'm beginning to think the textuers are corrupted on the cd to begin with.

I'm wondering if anyone has noticed this bug, I've found no evidence in the web and am beginning to think I'm the only one with this problem.

p.s. game is updated 1.02

I've seen some reports of this, and I think I may even have it myself, though since I've never played it on another PC I can't be sure. What are your specs? (They're not going to help me, and probably not anyone else, solve it, but it could be interesting information for anyone looking for a pattern. I have a Radeon 4770, myself. I seem to recall at least one other person posting about this with a Radeon, I'm thinking also 4000 series.)

Thx for your answer, Kloreep. My specs (the interesting part for this issue, that is) are: Win7x64 Home Premium, 4Gb DDR400, Asus A8N-E, Athlon X2 4800+, Radeon HD4890.
Are we seeing a pattern with the 4xxx series here? Could it be related to their shader architecture?
I also have a 9600 Nvidia card in my rig which I'm using as a secondary PhysX GPU on the Batman game. I could probably try and hook my monitor to it and check if I have the same issue with the popping ice particles in ME. It would probably be safe to say at this point that if the problems persists it's probably a game bug, but should it disappear it might end up being a problem with the card which, as I said, works fine in all other games. Please let me know if you get a chance to check on your system and see if you have the same issue. All it takes is to shoot and kill an enemy with snowblind rounds and wait for the frost to crack.

EDIT: just tried out the Nvidia card a while ago, and the problem is there just the same. It looks as if it is slightly less evident, but I still get these ugly semi-transparent rectangles jumping all over with the ice-cracking effect on enemies killed with snowblind rounds.
I'm beginning to believe the texture is corrupted originally from the installation CD (I have a EA Value-Games version). Other than that, I really can't think of anything else that would cause this, on two completely different cards and two completely different OS's as well.
