This happens to me a lot in battles involving +12ish enemies. I can give my party orders, but they wont execute them for sometimes  (if things are really bad) like 10 seconds later, which is really terrible (friendly fire frozen Alistair is cool but not helpful). I've got a good computer, and I've tried things like lowering the settings plenty, but I still get it. Is this a coding thing, or is it exclusive to me?

I've been getting something similar. The odd thing is my characters execute the animations for it, but the effects of said animations aren't registered (even melee hits, they swing swing swing, and 15-30 seconds later the enemy gets hit with about a hundred little white numbers).

Here's my thread on it, I'm thinking of bumping it now that someone else is having a similar problem.

Are you playing on PC, btw?

Yeah, it's on PC- otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned the "I have a good computer part" :P

It's really annoying though because I've had to reload several large battles (having to load on top of lagg is horrible lol) and I expect the finish of the game to also have some large scale thingy.

yes very large-scale thingy-

i dont have this trouble with my pc-what are your specs?

also remember party member can be stubborn about commands if they don't like you enough.

Eh, seeing as how it never happens in smaller battles ever I'm quite certain that it isn't some AI thing.

Well lets try and see if its a computer performance issue first. Please post a Dxdiag today and I will be back to look at it. (I'm a computer tech.) Anyways if you don't know how to run a dxdiag (or anyone else that needs to know how) Click on yoru start menu, click run, then type in dxdiag then hit okay. On the next page it brings up let it do its thing then when its done click on Save all information, it will give you an option to save a text file on your computer. Save it, open it, copy and paste it all here. I will take a look later. (this is also helpful for bioware just so you know):bandit:

I'm having pretty much the same experience. In all the very large-scale battles (including almost every part of the final assault), spell effects and damage becomes horribly delayed, even though my framerate is decently playable. I usually run with the highest detail and texture settings and 2x antialiasing, but I've tried turning all the graphics options to their lowest settings during these battles without any notable improvement to my problem. My framerate's much better, sure, but the combat delay is just as bad.

I can cast a cone of cold, have the icon black out after a short delay, and then run off somewhere. Several seconds later - I haven't timed it, but it seems to take 10 or more in the worse cases - my character will freeze in place and the cone of cold graphics will appear spewing from where he now is. The creatures who were in the target area at the time of casting, or who passed through shortly after in the worst cases, will freeze and take damage at this point.

This lag / delay / desynch happens to all damage and effects during these times. Something that dies in one hit from a sword will still be running around attacking me until the damage catches up, and my warriors will be uselessly swinging at them the whole time. Party members with a tactic to use health poultices will try to drink them over and over again until the healing effect finally catches up.

System:
Dell Dimension 8400 - Pentium 4 3.00 GHz
Windows XP with service pack 3
2.25 gigs of ram
Nvidia 8600gt with driver version 190.62

Same issues here, I started learning how many hits I'd need on avarage per enemy though, so just retargeted the next after a few hits. As warrior, this is easier as you get the stamina gain from a kill, which tells you that the enemy is "dead" and you can stop hitting it.

Very annoying though, especially in the final parts of the game.

Glad to see I'm not the only one, I've googled it and haven't really seen anyone else with this! It really is what keeps me from a second playthrough since it's so absolutely horrible to play in. The final battle was just... ugh. I'm still not sure how I beat it on Hard, probably with the help of 72x potent poultices lol

Try Ctrl+Alt+Del, select the daorigins.exe process, right click, set affinity..., and only have one box ticked..

This will only make the game use one core, but it does seem to fix alot of random laggy issues that crop up.

I have a top notch computer also and i am having exactly the same problems as you people are having. If others are having the same problem with computer specs similiar to mine i think we should be expecting Bioware to release some kind of patch.

Please see below my computer specs many thanks for any assistance:

Try Ctrl+Alt+Del, select the daorigins.exe process, right click, set affinity..., and only have one box ticked..

This will only make the game use one core, but it does seem to fix alot of random laggy issues that crop up.

Have you tried this yourself, or had similar problems? My problem isn't framerate or anything, I can play with maxed detail and textures and 2x AA- or all on low and still get the same.

You are running a DX10 capable card on a game using DX10 effects with DX9.0c installed. Either upgrade your directX to 10 or turn off the frame buffer effects in the game menu and see where we are at that point.

AGP seems to be enabled in the bios. O'd disable that for good practice ( I may be wrong but I don't recall there ever being an agp 8800gt )

There is no excuse for still running xp2 windows. Update it to xp3. Your computer must be fully up to date before you can expect people to be able to diagnose your problems.

so to conclude.

XP sp3. update to it

DX10 update to it

install the latest nvidia drivers for your card. 191 is latest or you can consider the 195 beta drivers which have been optimised for DA:O (but mainly for SLI. This is stable, I'm running it )

....Zoot, did you just suggest he upgrades XP's directX to 10?

Would you like to change that answer?

Maybe my computers lack of ability to do things impossible is what laggs down large battles ;)

But seriously though, I thought my drivers were up to date and all that! Can it be seen in there if it's not? Hmm.

Surely something like that isn't the problem though, seeing as how other XP users get along just fine? I'd rather not dabble in doing things like that anyway.

ok then turn off the DX10 based frame buffer effects.

Given it's unoffical, I think your assumption that DX10 on Windows XP is needed is wrong. The game doesn't use DX10 when installed in XP. It uses DX 9.0c, and as it's noted on the back of the box that it run's with Pixel Shader 3 and DX9.0c in Windows XP, I stick by my saying your answer is silly.

Maybe I'll have to update my drivers or go to SP3 then. What sort of frame buffer effects? The one that makes everything impossibly dark without in on?

This happens to me a lot in battles involving +12ish enemies. I can give my party orders, but they wont execute them for sometimes  (if things are really bad) like 10 seconds later, which is really terrible (friendly fire frozen Alistair is cool but not helpful). I've got a good computer, and I've tried things like lowering the settings plenty, but I still get it. Is this a coding thing, or is it exclusive to me?

Well lets try and see if its a computer performance issue first. Please post a Dxdiag today and I will be back to look at it. (I'm a computer tech.) Anyways if you don't know how to run a dxdiag (or anyone else that needs to know how) Click on yoru start menu, click run, then type in dxdiag then hit okay. On the next page it brings up let it do its thing then when its done click on Save all information, it will give you an option to save a text file on your computer. Save it, open it, copy and paste it all here. I will take a look later. (this is also helpful for bioware just so you know):bandit:

Hey, so I’m extremely interested to hear your take (being a tech) on the game’s persistence on pegging everyone’s CPU at full throttle in-game, while paused, or even while minimized. As many have pointed out, the overwhelming large majority of these tech issues are actually symptons stemming from the game pegging the CPUs at 100% non-stop.   This problem is going to have not only the slow-down, freezing, crashing, and BSOD issues – but its also going to cause long-term hardware degradation, considering how many hours we all play this game. It’s like running Intel Burn Test for hundreds of hours on end…. Which is about as healthy for a CPU as pouring a glass of water on it     -_^

First of all, have you ever heard of such a thing? What could be causing it and can we expect a fix to come in a reasonable timeframe?

I’d rather not shorten the life of my CPU, and risk burning it to a crisp, if a fix may come in a timely manner. I’m sure others feel the same. Also, I will post a Dxdiag for your review when I get home if that would be beneficial. My system scores over 20k on 3D Mark Vantage, and has A+ case cooling and A+ Heatsink & Fan, but is still suffering from the excessive load on the system – which is no different than almost everyone else, I understand.

And thanks for lending your insight to the community

Now when you mention it, my computer has started to black out after installing and finishing Dragon Age. No warning or anything, it just shuts down. Could it be overheating?

I would like to bump this cause im having the same problem i can run
the game fine on very high with 1280x960 but on large battles
everything is delayed  just like TC, no framerate issues on large
battles its just that well... everything is delayed damage will show
after 3-6 sometimes 10 secs even if i turn everything to low
framebuffer is off it still happens, drivers up to date.
