Is it possible to have only the PC selected but have the party members following automatically?

Hmm. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of selecting only one member? The use of selecting a single member is so you can order that character to do something without having the others trailing along. It'd be pretty awful in battle if your party kept following the leader everywhere, for instance!

However, yes it is, certainly using the BG2 game engine. I'm not sure about vanilla. On the buttons for deciding on which party layout to use, you can right-click and more options come up. (If it's not right click, try left click) The one that you want is a wavy line with arrows on it. In certain situations it is very useful. (Stops them going the wrong way when space is restricted)

there's a formation option like that in BG1 too. But its not very reliable. Sometimes members in the back row don't even move at all.



Another way is to select the other member(s), click the shield icon (or press F1) and select the leader.
